Born with 3 working paws, Lady Bird is a tripawd puppy and I feel judged...

My puppy, Lady Bird, is a purebred golden retriever puppy whose front left paw lost blood-flow in the womb causing it to not fully form. Therefore she has been a tripawd since birth. At 4 months old she underwent amputation surgery to remove her bad paw and effected elbow leaving her with half of her upper arm on the left side.

When I decided to adopt this girl all I could look at was her sweet eyes and gentle willing spirit and I just knew she needed to come home with me. I work from home so I have all the time in the world to spend with her and we have a single story home with lots of rugs for traction . I try to give her the best life possible.... Why then do I feel like I am constantly being questioned, and put down by those that meet her? Why do people think it is 'helpful' to always point out how she will struggle some day with arthritis, how her front leg is receiving so much extra pressure, and how, maybe, she won't live as long or as pain free as a puppy with 4 legs? It breaks my heart...

Last night we attended our first puppy class. I spent a lot of time researching a great training facility to ensure they were prepared to work with a tripawd puppy, would have smaller class sizes, and ensure safety above everything else. The class went well until the end when the trainer wanted to talk about having her not attend the group classes because other puppies were scared of how she hops around... what?!? The other puppies seemed fine, she was the best behaved in the class and had a great time learning new things.... I felt like the mom on the playground who sees other parents telling their kid not to play with your kid because they are 'different'. Will the judgement ever end? Should I stop attending these classes?

Ok I just had to. OMD! I can't believe you were told that.

First, let me welcome you to the community. We are so glad you joined. Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.

Lady Bird is such a lucky girl to have you for her mom! You are doing all the right things for your girl, and with a mom like you she will have such a great, long, healthy and hoppy life. That is clear to see.

Now about that trainer. smiley7smiley7smiley7

Seriously? I mean what, she could read the minds of every puppy in the class? I have never, ever heard such a whackadoodle comment about a Tripawd in a group setting. I'll bet if you took a poll of all the other parents in the class, they would say their dogs didn't notice a thing.

So it sounds to me like it's a trainer problem, not a Tripawd problem. Perhaps she is afraid of not doing the right things for your puppy, maybe she's scared that her techniques will cause injury, and she's too inexperienced to articulate her concerns. Blame it on the "disability" is easier than looking for ways to work Lady Bird into group activities that will not exhaust her.

When it comes to group classes (and I was just telling a Tripawds Helpline caller about this the other day), my biggest concern for any Tripawd in a group class is that sometimes the activities can be too much for them to physically keep up with, especially if the dog is extremely young and/or new to life on 3. I speak from experience, as our Tripawd Wyatt Ray had a difficult time keeping up with long walks with his class, and outings. So you know what? The trainer just told us to sit it out. She got it. She was cool. She knew it was the right place for him to be.

Based on what you've described, the trainer you chose is not the right one for Lady Bird. She deserves better. Far better. If the trainer is part of a school or larger facility, are there other trainers you can work with? If not, move on. We are happy to help you find one who has the experience and the sp_hearticon2of a true dog trainer that cares.

Off my soap-box now. Stay tuned for more feedback from the community.

PS In the meantime, have you considered taking her to rehab therapy, just to have her evaluated so you can know what kind of activities are fun, safe and beneficial for you two to do together? A therapist can evaluate her and give you a good idea of ways you can keep her injury-free for a long, long time. We think rehab is DA BOMB and Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit so please take advantage of the program OK? It's super educational.

What the bleep!!!!!   Just like Jerry I am completely  stunned and shocked at the completely off base and uncalled for comments from this so called trainer!!!  Craaaaazy!  Very hard to understand  all the "issues" behind her comments, nor do we want to waste anytime focusing  on the illogical and dysfunctional way this went down.  "Judgement " these days seems to become.more and more acceptable and "okay".  I'm so sorry you've been on the receiving  en.  Especially  when it comes to the love you have for your precious  Lady Bird!!!!♥️

So shake them off and know they have ZERO bearing  on your precious Lady Bird!!!  We are so happy that you have brought  her into   your heart and home.  She is sooooo lucky!!! Licky Lady Bird!  And her name is just precious!!!

And for Pete's sake, there are no guarantees  about the future health of ANY dog, four legs or three!.

I'm just so glad you found us where you can get the support and information your new family (tripawd family) has to offer!  And just somyou know, most people are truly amazed at  how wonderfully well Tripawds adapt!  Most don't  even notice they have three legs at first because  they are so PERFECT just the way they are!!

We have a thread on here somewhere from members who have made spectacular  replies when someone  is rude enough to make an offensive or judgemental comment.  I'll try and SEARCH for it.

Also, we have a member  who has a dog that was a tripawd since birth.  I think he's about nin or so now and, of I recall, was Certified  as a "Good Citozen  Service Dog".

JERRY, does that ring a bell?  Maybe Buddy is his name???? I think you've done Tripawd news about him.

Anyway, we cannot wait to follow Lady Bird's adventures  with you.  You two were definitely  meant to be together!!!!  Thanknuoj for giving her such a wonderful life!!!

Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Wow, thank you so much for the support and the kind words!!

She really is the best little puppy and I would choose her over and over again. We will try looking for some other trainers in the area and do more research to see if they really have experience working with a tripawd and are supportive and loving towards them too. We are trying to find ways to reward her for training without having to use high value treats as we are super careful with her weight and are keeping her on the skinny side so she has the least impact on her leg as possible.

I had no idea there were rehab places for dogs! I am going to look into that right away and see if there is someone in the area that we can go to. That sounds like a great plan for Lady Bird and would help ease some of our concerns and questions as her body grows.

Thanks again for the support. I feel so much better after knowing that this wasn't a 'normal' trainer interaction and that I should try finding a place that will work with her better.

You are very welcome. Everybody teaches us something here. We learned that there are still people out there who don't get it when it comes to Tripawds! Sheesh.

Yes, weight control is the #1 thing you can do to keep her healthy! You are awesome!!

If you'd like help finding a rehab therapist let us know OK? We can often find them for members when they don't think there is one nearby. It's a wonderful thing to do for her and you.

Let us know what you find out about a trainer! I'd love to turn this into a Tripawds News article at some point, about finding trainers that understand a Tripawd's needs.
