Good Morning Friends,

Sally - yes, we sure do get excited when they potty even if in the house!!!! And I have a funny feeling that dear husband helped him on the couch out of guilt because he knows just how much he loves it!!!

Karen - yes, he is on other meds and has been taking them regularly. Only had an issue one night where he was def out of sorts and I tried everything but in the end didn't force him. He was ok! Yes, I def think he will be "couch day celebrant in January" Cant wait!!!

Katy - Thanks for the advice, I did some research before I removed the patch. I was nervous it would hurt when I removed but he didn't flinch! Thank goodness....

Should I be concerned if Brody won't go outside? 2 days ago he went out like a champ - peed and pooped and now he's back to not wanting to go out at all.

Day 6 - I took the patch off him yesterday afternoon. He seems to be doing fine. Still taking his meds and eating. He actually has wined the last 2 mornings for his chicken and rice and scarfs it down. He hasn't gone that bathroom since Monday night when he went in the playroom. But he hasn't drank an excessive amount of water like he did the prior couple days. My daughter's friend came in and visited him last night when she got dropped off from swim. He was very excited to see her and appreciated the rub! I am going to get some more visitors over to see him. He LOVES LOVES LOVES company! He seems to enjoy the warm compresses so I have been able to do those as well. I am very glad that he rests comfortably all over house. At least he is walking around when he shifts rooms. Is that enough mobility for him? How long should I expect him to lay around? It seems like eternity but in actuality we humans would NOT be walking the day after surgery so I know he is really doing amazingly well! His incision still looks good, no bruising!

Thanks for support and guidance. Have a wonderful day! Julie :-)

Yes!  So glad he peed.  Heck, I bet he'd glad he peed!

While he's in recovery, I wouldn't think too much about his mobility.  He's doing what feels right to him, and if that includes getting on the couch with dad, that's OK!  Thankfully, you're right, you were there to help him down.  I swear one of Jackson's best naps during recovery was when we helped him onto the couch.  He was there for practically half the day, in the same spot, same position.  He never does that.  He must've wanted that couch badly and it served him well.  As far as his rests go, just make sure he's resting and has enough places to do so.  It sounds like it already, so never fear!  You guys are doing GREAT!

Yaaaay for the peepee dance!!!

I agree with Jackson's Mom, don't think too much about whether or not he's mobile enough. He needs rest right now and that's going to help him get super strong later on. Keep a close eye on his activity level and don't let him over do things, there will be plenty of time for wild & crazy fun when he's all healed up.

It does sound like a pretty typical recovery to me. There will be some ups and downs but if you're at all concerned you know the drill, call your vet just to let them know.

You have a great attitude though, super upbeat and cheerful, that goes a very long way at this time. Keep it up!

Another pee party going onover here!!  calls for ice cream!   Speaking of, I had to put a scoop of ice cream in Hapy Hannah's water for awhile to get her to drink more.   Also, when you do the chicken a d rice, you can sneak in a little water too!

Yes, as others have said, this all sou ds very much the norm for less than a week outof recovery from major surgery!  Love that he has visitors to "perk" him up.

Just to give you a "coparison"....which, by the way, we should never compare one dog's recovery with another...but....this will make you feel better.....my Happy Hannah, was cryining, whininf, restless, only sleeping ours at a time for the first two weeks!  That was over seven months ago now and still continuing forward (kocking on wood over here) and se js doing great!!  Loves every single second life has tooffer and is hapoier than words can even describe!   And your Brody Boy  will be too!!

Keep hanfingin there!  You are a GREAT mom amd doing a GREAT job!!

GREAT BIG HUS ALL AROUND!

WELL.... I just wrote a 1/2 book update only to have my computer tell me it is "restarting to update" and I lost everything. So needless to say I am a little irritated at the moment.

In a nutshell. Brody is doing well. His incision looks great. He is resting a lot and did go outside last night and today to pee and poop. He is drinking but is no longer eating anything but the cheese with his meds so that is discouraging. Its been about 2-3 days now. He isn't interested in chicken and rice anymore. I tried chicken nuggets and ground beef and rice and no interest either. He doesn't even want doggie treats and takes a few licks of frosty paws sometimes. I did make chicken noodle soup yesterday and he ate some meat that I had pulled off the chicken. I am happy with our decision  but he looks very unhappy and that makes me sad. Is it normal for him to shake? When he sits down he trembles.  I've had several visitors this week to perk him up and he does get excited but it doesn't last for long. He really seems the happiest when he thinks he's going on a walk, which I have taken him around the cul-de-sac but my letter says no exercise for 2 weeks and I don't want to overdue him. But he practically pulls me with excitement. I want that Brody all the time! I scheduled to have his staples removed a week from this Monday. His hair is starting to grow back too. Today is day 9 and he doesn't seem any better or different from day 1 honestly. I'm sad for him!!!

Hey Julie, this makes me wonder if it's time to draw down his meds.  Remind us, what is he on?  And please compare what he's on now to what he was on before amp.  I remember after amp, Jackson was on half the meds he was prior to amp.  Then about day 10 we went off tramadol, cold turkey.  We didn't notice a difference, but certainly tramadol and other meds can do some whacky things to our pups.  Maybe he's wanting to walk because he has the jitters, these pent-up energy bits from drugs he wants to expel.  You could draw him down on your own (many of us have!), or converse with your vet first.  The shaking and funky food habits make me think Side Effects.  Alternatively, your dear Brody may just take a little longer to recover than others.  He's happy, at times.  He's eating, at times.  He's eliminating, at times.  And he gets happy, at times.  THOSE are the best times!  Keep that as your normal and roll with it.

Silly Brody, not wanting chicken nuggets.  I got a 3-legged wonder here that'll be right over to help him out!

Breathe.  HE WILL GET BETTER!  HE WILL BOUNCE BACK!  HE WILL RETURN TO YOUR DEAREST BRODY!  Promise.

Hi Julie,

Is Brody still wearing the "cone of shame "?

Tucker was much quieter and less "tuck like" when he was wearing the cone.

Because he is a lab (and very food driven) his appetite was never a problem but he wasn't his usual goofy self for a little while.

Don't worry......you made the right decision for Brody.  He will definitely perk up soon.

That's great that he enjoys having visitors and his interest in walking says that he is still the same guy....who just needs some TLC!

Take care of both of you.

Linda and Tucker

Hi Sweet Julie!  This recoverh stuff is no fun but it does get better!  Betcha' get tired of nearing that, huh?

Now, look at your post today where it feels li,e he's no better than he was day e.  Now look at October 9th post.  Ther IS iprovement!  It's just soooooo hard to not see them up to par.....so hard!   And he WANTS to go n walks lw!  That's good too!

You will get a lot of diverse opi i s here because every experience is different!  No right...no wr g...just us pass g n  formation.

Symptns from pain and symprtons frommeds can look exactly the same.  The trembling, etc. could indeed be a sign of pain or not.    Something uou could do, with your vet's aproval, is bump the pain meds up for 12--24 hrs. and see ifit makes a difference.   Happy Hannah's recovery took "longer' than some and I had hern pain meds for three weeks.

Is Brody on an antibiotic?  Tat could be causing stomach distress.

Have you tried anti-nausea pill?

Could ne of yor friends bring a cheeseburger n a visit?   Try lettng someone else feedkng him.  Try dry cat food.

I realy thi k you're just dealing with the ormal recovery stuff. .....no teperature' right?

Keep us posted, okay  And' of course, you can take him i to vet Mon. for a check-up jjst to ease yojr mind.

Your Brody is still there.....he's just recoveri g fro MAJOR surgery and not toally perky yet!  Heck, humans would still be inthe hospital!

Lots of hugs to you....-really big hugs!

Sally and Happy Hannah

Good Morning All,

So the good news is..... We went to Flemings for dinner last night and I saved 1/2 my filet for Brody. Our friends gave us their leftovers too and when we got home Brody gladly ate them!!! woo hoo. I guess I'll be cooking him steak for a bit!

Bad DAD! Yesterday my husband did walk him down the street. I think he was excited that when he said "walk" he came right with him. Of course we're not supposed to exercise for 2 weeks. Is this a bad thing on our part for doing it? Today he's whimpered a few times when trying to lay down so then I think he's sore and we've overdone him???? CRAP CRAP CRAP....

Another thing I have noticed is that when he walks his head is always down, like he's depressed. He rarely walks with it up anymore, unless it's down just so he can concentrate on where he is going and hopping to.

Katy - thanks for mentioning the meds. I never thought of that. He is on the same dose now as he was before except he is on an antibiotic now too. He is about 65lbs. Here is what he takes:

Simplicef 200mg - 1 every 24 hours

Gabapentin 100mg - 1 every 12 hours

Tramadol 50mg - 1 every 12 hours

Novax 100 mg (generic rimadyl) - 1 every 12 hours

I am not comfortable adjusting his meds without speaking with the vet, as I am not that knowledgeable as to what they all do anyway.  He was on all these meds for 3 weeks prior to surgery because he was in so much pain from tumor and then he had the biopsy so he remained on them. Do you think he needs less or more? Thank you.

Linda - he hasn't had to wear the cone. Since it is his front leg he can't reach the incision. He has left it alone and it looks great. He did have a great appetite and then it has diminished. Thank you.

Sally - Yes, he's on an antibiotic. Where do I get an anti-nausea pill from? Cat food? Is that good? Do dogs like it? You are absolutely right that us humans would still be in the hospital so he is doing GREAT considering all he has accomplished in the last week. I just feel so bad for him. I've never taken his temperature. What is normal so I know what to look for if it is elevated? BTW, I stumbled across your journey with Hannah - wow you did go through a lot but I am happy to see that everything worked out for you and I really appreciate all your guidance and support.

I will post again later.. I am calling the vet. I hope she calls back. Thank you again. I really love this board and all it has to offer. You are all amazing and I thank god that I joined and have met you all. You are amazing!!1

this will be short as I'm tailgating. talk to vet about meds. at this point in our recovery Jackson was off tram, and half the gaba and rimadyl. his hanging head while on walks could be drug stupor? I hope you reach your vet! yey steak!

I'm glad to hear he ate. Brody's got good taste!

Try not to beat yourself up about the walk, it's a trial and error thing and we've all learned those lessons. Yes, it's a good idea to keep the activity restricted to potty walks only for at least 2 weeks or until you talk to your vet. And yes, talk to your vet about adjusting the medication. Take notes about whatever symptoms he's presenting and have that information ready to help your vet pinpoint the current medication needs. It can be a balancing act for a while but you'll get it.

About walking with his head down. It takes a lot of work to learn how to get around on 3, he's gaining confidence. There's lots you can to do help. You may want to have a listen to our interview with Dr. Stepita about post-op ways to help things get easier for both of you (sorry can't recall if I recommended it to you or not yet!).

Keep it slow and steady, the recovery won't last forever and you can get back to fun times!

Morning,

Brody still yelps a little but not every time he lays down. I did call the vet yesterday but she never called back. Surprise surprise. I'm glad its an emergency line.... I guess my questions and concerns aren't emergencies!! I will call the office today.

Got a cheeseburger from mcd's yesterday and Brody woofed it down!! Yah!!! He also ate some fried chicken last night. I took 2 steaks out yesterday that I'm going to cook today. He may never go back to dog food after this?????

Thanks again for all the help. I really appreciate it. I don't know what I'd do without this board. You are the best!!!

Have a great day. It looks like yet ANOTHER rainy one! So depressing.... Julie :-)

Wow sounds like Brody is getting some NICE MEALS!  What's there to be depressed about buddy!?  I bet that has something to do with the meds.......but I'm not a vet, that's just my guess!  Just keep taking it one day at a time, follow his lead!

Keep us posted!
