Today I  started Palladia therapy with my dog Beau. He is 37.2 kilograms and is on 100mg of Palladia once a day every other day for three days then two days off and then back to every other day and so on.  I am so concerned about the side effects of this drug.  If anyone with experience using this drug could offer information on their dogs experience I would be very grateful.

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I see from your profile that Beau lost his rear leg to OSA.  Has he done other chemo?

I've not used Palladia although it was originally approved for use with mast call cancer which is why Tripug Maggie lost her rear leg, Mag's chemo was done long before Palladia was released for use. My second Pug also had mast cell cancer and Palladia was recommended.  I declined as Tani had many other health issues and I didn't want to complicate things further.

I did a forum search on Palladia and got these results.

I did a blog search on Palladia and got these result.

You might find some helpful information in the above links while you wait for input from others.

Hello there! I'm so glad you decided to post in the forums. Your future posts won't need approval so post away.

We have lots of people who have gone through the Palladia treatment with their dogs. I personally don't have experience with it but I can share some links with other people's experiences. I know there are many in these forums so I've weeded through the last three years for you. I hope it helps.

Thanks for your response!  I had already done some searching here but didn’t come up with much. Beau was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma and a pathological fracture of his tibia as a result of it on March 1st with amputation if his right rear leg on March 14th at the University of Minnesota.  We had an oncology visit last Monday to discuss options. We are trying something very new and basically unproven except for a very small study (14 dogs) that our oncologist was privy to that is nowhere near being published or ratified. In a nutshell the dogs were given oral Palladia as a front line treatment. The median disease free survival time was 11 months. 7 dogs went longer, 7 dogs went less. No specifics were available as the information was presented to a board of oncologists in summation to inquire whether or not the study seemed worthy of discussing at the next oncology conference. Dr Husbands thought they may be on to something and offered it to us as an option.  We thought hard and have mixed feelings  but decided to try in part because vet trips take a lot out of Beau and he takes a couple of days to recover from each one.  The IV chemo regiment would take a lot out of him.  So, no other treatment other than amputation and we are giving supplements - artemisinin , artemix, butyrex acid, C ether, fish oil, milk thistle, vitamin E, San Shedan Chuanbei Ye. We are watching the docuseries The Truth about Pet Cancer as well which deals with a ketogenic diet to see what we glean.  As the rest of us here, we just want Beau to have the best chance possible with maintaining a high quality of life.

We did Palladia for about six weeks. Rocky's cancer started spreading between his fifth and scheduled sixth rounds of Carboplatin, so the Palladia was our second line of defense.

Rocky got his dose every Monday-Wednesday-Friday. His OSA spread down his side as he had a couple of tumors. After a couple of weeks on Palladia, the fast-growing tumors had actually shrunk a bit. Unfortunately, the Palladia stopped being effective after six weeks and we took him off it.

His appetite and energy level decreased a bit and he did have diarrhea, but how much of that was a reaction to the Palladia and how much was a reaction to his cancer is unknown. His cancer did get aggressive at the end, so I tend to think it was more the cancer than any side effects.

David and Rocky (and Baxter now too!)

Rocky had his right front leg amputated on Valentine's Day 2017 after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

He joined the September Saints on September 3, 2017.

He is the toughest, bravest, sweetest and best friend I'll ever know.

Thanks for everyone’s reply and links.   All information is so helpful right now. I will post more about how he tolerates the drug as we move forward. He is not on the highest dose. He is on 2.7mg per kg. I believe the highest is 3.25mg per kg at his weight.  Will he tolerate it better because of that?  Whose to say. So far today he is fine but I don’t know how long it takes the side effects to become a problem if they are going to show up. He goes in for a recheck in about 5 weeks and we are committed to staying with it until then to see what we find out as long as he has no adverse reactions.

Bandit did not get his final Carboplatin treatment as they found mets in his lungs, this was about 3-4 weeks ago.  He was prescribed Palladia-200mg-every other day (he weighs 160 lbs), and Losartan 1500mg per day (750 am, 750pm).  He was in great spirits, energetic, active when he started this.  He was fine after the first dose.  After the second Palladia dose he became very cramped, could barely get up or walk, didn't eat for go outside for a day-it was all we could do to get him to drink water. We stopped all medication except for the minimal Rimadyl.  It took 4-5 days before he was back to normal, maybe longer.  The doctors wanted him back on Palladia at a lower dose, which I am really not in favor of as he has finally regained all of his energy and happiness, and seems as normal as could be.  I understand that he isn't fine below the surface, but you wouldn't know anything was wrong with him.

We had some travel planned, and a dog sitter, so we have waited until yesterday to restart the Palladia/Losartan.  They reduced the amount to 180mg MWF, and back on the 1500mg of Losartan daily.  We gave him the first dose last night and he seems fine today.  I'm hopeful the second dose Monday, or third Wednesday do not result in the same condition as a few weeks ago. If it does, I'm failry certain we will not continue down this path and let him be happy for as long as possible.

We were giving him the meds in Pill Pockets in his food, which worked initially, but it seems he has equated the pill pockets to the discomfort he was in and is now wary to eat without inspecting his bowl for those things.  We've stopped putting the meds in his food so he doesn't worry about eating...we give him the meds seperately after he eats-which is not easy, and will get more difficult.

We need to see him happy, and not fearful of eating to continue on this path...I'm not sure it is worth it otherwise.

If there are any words of wisdom from those who have gone down this path I'd love to hear about your experience.  We want to give him as much additional time as we can, but not at the expense of his comfort. If others have experienced the same and it gets better quickly, please let me know.

Thanks!

Virginia

Want to thank YOU Bandit's Mom, for sharng so much of his story in the Palladia so far.We look forward to updates when you can.  Really hoping there are no side effects.  But, if there are, sounds ike Bandit can bounce back.
