12/3/14. Not a good end to my trip. Calvert wasn't happy to see me really. Hes lost soo much weight in 11 days. I can feel every rib anf his entire spine. He will not eat for me still. And theres a discoloration to his nose. He sees the vet tomorrow but I am very sad. He is just not feeling well.

Awww sorry Calvert isn't feeling well. I'm glad you are taking hm for a good check up tomorrow.

It could be so many little things...he's probably susceptible to infections, maybe a little respiratory something going on..maybe just a tummy virus.

Have you tried feeding him a little something besides his "special" diet? It wouldnt hurt to try a little chicken or something like that.

I bet he could use a good dose of IV fluids and that will turn him right around!! Can you tell if he's dehydrated? Did they pet sitter say if he's been drinking water...did he try different foods, etc. Do you have any fluids and do you know how to give sub-q fluids under the skin? If you are overly worried, maybe a quick trip to the er for a dose of fluids and a quick check up.

Calvert DOES know you are home and he IS glad! He has his snuggle pal back!! He just doesn't feel good for some reason that probably has nothing to do with anything major st all! Could he have gotten into anything while you were gone...eaten anything he shouldn't, etc.

Even with a little discoloration on the nose...he's still on of the cutest dogs in the planet!!!

If you do go to the er tonight, please update when you can...and same goes for vet visit tomorrow. We've got all paws crossed and know he'll be feeling better with the proper treatment...and hsving momma home!! I know it's hard not to worry, but I real l y think this is just something that is so fixable!

Love and hugss!

Poor Calvert...I'm so sad that the little guy isn't feeling well.  Like Sally said maybe he's dealing with a respiratory infection or some sort of tummy trouble.  Plus I'm sure he's just out of sorts since his mommy was gone and his routine was changed up.  I'm sure he likes the doggy sitter but he wasn't his mommy and furkids thrive with having a routine.  I simply REFUSE to believe that this has anything to do with his kidney issue.  He's way to SPECIAL to be finished with life just yet.

I agree he needs to get some nourishment in him so his body can fight whatever is going on.  Cook him up some chicken or grill him a steak and mix it in some white rice.  Yeah...I'd go buy him a big ol steak from Outback or some steakhouse just to get him to eat something.

Hang in there and we're all waiting on pins and needles to hear how things go at the vets office.

I'll being thinking of Calvert today and pray it's nothing serious.

Sending a big ol HUG to Calvert and you!

I think Calvert is actuall starving but jist refuses to eat dog food. Last night I took him to visit a friend. Her hubby came home with fried chicken amd started feeding it to him.CalverT GOBBLED IT UP! so I bought white rice and chicken. I think hes just done with dog food. He was very happy to see my friend. But didntt seem as happy to see me. So I think its a combination of hes mad at me, and he doesnt want dog food anymore.

I also think that feeding him food that isnt prescription just to get him to gain weight back and have a better quality of life is better than feeding him food he doesnt like in order to try to extend his life. Quality over quantity. Id rather he have a short life and get fat and be happy then a longer life and be skinny and unhappy.

You jave nooooop idea how happy this update makes me! OMD!!! A little victory in Calvert's case is a HUGE VICTORY!!!

Heck yeah!!! QUALITY OVER QUANTITY ANYDAY!!!!!! I'm sure once he sees you as the person giving him the "good stuff" and not the "medicinal food" he'll be his happy snuggling self with you again!!

And dogs DO "pout" and become aloff sometimes when they feel "abandoned" by their humans when they take short trips!

It still is a good idea to have a check up in case he does need a dose of fluids, etc.

Your philosophy is spot on about Calvert and I KNOW he agrees!!! This dog is ALL ABOUT QUALITY AND BEING HAPPY AND CHUNKY!!!

CHICKEN!!! And a scoop of ice cream too! YAAAAAAAAAY FOR CALVERT....AND YOU!!!!!

Lots of hugs and love!!!

Oh my sweet Calvert boy, you are making your mom worried and sad.......but yes, on the quality over quantity, give him ANYTHING he wants to eat....and Sally's idea for a scoop of ice cream, absolutely!! Take him to McDonalds and order that quarter pounder with cheese, and give him that bun too.....no regrets.....

I also agree with what Sally said about fluids, very important if a pup or kitty has become dehydrated.....it definitely will help them bounce back very well. Also, talk to your vet about mirtazapine to help his appetite, that could help him out a lot too.

Keeping you and your sweet boy in my thoughts, and {{{hugs}}} too........

My tripug Maggie developed kidney failure. My vet gave me the prescription diet kibble and Maggie hated it.  I gave up on it pretty quickly.  I tried making my own food for her that was good for a dog with kidney failure.

Not long after the kidney diagnosis we discovered that Mag had another cancer in her mouth.  Not treatable for several reasons so then the kidney diet kind of went out the window all together.  I just fed her what she would eat, when she would eat.  Getting a dog with kidney failure to eat is exasperating.  Mag lost lots of weight, she was under 14 pounds and should have been over 17. It doesn't sound like a lot but she lost about a quarter of her body weight.  She passed from the oral melanoma just 3 months after the diagnosis so I only dealt with the kidney failure for about 4 months.

Tri-pug Maggie survived a 4.5 year mast cell cancer battle only to be lost to oral melanoma.

12/4/14. We did not get good news. The nose, breath, and his black tipped tongue shows he is uremic. Vet said to just keep him comfortable until its time. We got home and Calvert threw up for the first time.

I did make him rice and chicken. :-) he ate it. :-) we'll see how he does with it. Maybe the fried chicken upset his tummy
Hope he gets some strength and plays with me with that ball!

That is definitely positive thinking! Maybe you are right, fried chicken is so yummy but maybe just disagreed with him. So glad he ate chicken and rice.......that will help his tummy and make him feel better. I look in his eyes in these recent pics and he still has a lot of life left in his gorgeous amber eyes, he is not done yet!!

More positive thoughts coming your way for handsome Calvert......!!

Yes, I agree with Bonnie...everything she said!

Calvert is NOT done yet!! The car ride....being at the vet's...the fried chicken....the woofing it all down so fast...that could DEFINITELY cause a little puking session!

I hope you don't mind me mentioning this...but did the vet offer ANY treatment suggestions? Have you considered a second opinion? It jist seems that a course of fluids would have been in order to help flush out toxins, etc., as well as something to coat his tummy. Sometimes vets can "give up" long before the dog has!!

I would definitely keep giving him the food enjoys...many, many small meals spread out over the day. Getting his strength back and motivating his taste buds again will be a good thing!!

REMEMBER, Calvert does NOT have a time frame stamped on his butt! He is with you right now and that is all that matters to him!! Let NOTHING rob you of your time together! You are an amazingny strong and compassionate woman with an equally amazing pup!! An incredibly strong team who knows how to beat the odds!!!

I think that bottom picture Calvert is saying "Hey! There's way too much rice in here!! Where is the chicken??"

Looking forward to lots more pictures!!

Sending lots of love!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Let us know if you do get a second opinion or if the vet thinks fluids would help...even if it's under the skin given at home.
