Almost a month after his amputation, Calvert has made a complete recovery! All his complications have been resolved... draining finally stopped in the last week!! He is full of energy. Cant get hom to slow down. All he wants to do is play! I wouldn't want it any other way though. Oh, hes snuggling again. he didnt up until a few days ago. He would just lie on the foot of my bed. Before his accident, though he'd always snuggle up to me at bed time. So everything is back back normal! I couldnt be more proud of him.
For all the new tripawd mommies and daddies put there, you'll get back normal again. Stay strong everyone!
This has me grinning ear to ear over here!!!! I'm so happy!!
Calvert certainly had some challenges, but showed everyone what a tough little guy he is!! A wonderful inspiration to all!
YAAAAAAAAY. CALVERT and YAAAAAAAAAAAAY. for snuggles!!!!!!

Here's an update on Calvert.
Before his sugery 4 months ago, pre op labwork showed slightly elevated kidney enzymes. Doc said to come back and recheck this fall. Yesterday blood chemistry panels and a urine analysis indicated Calvert is in chronic renal failure. guessing its congenital. From what ive read symptoms of juvenile kidney failure or kidney dysplasia appear between 10-20months. Calvert is 18 months approximately. My vet is gonna do some research and contact Kansas State University Vet Center for treatment options. Until that time, Calvert is doing ok. No apparent distress. Just gotta focus on giving him the best quality of life possible.
I'm so sorry that Calvert is having to deal with another issue after amputation. I'm sure your vet and Kansas State U can come up with some treatment options.
Calvert is too young to be finished with his earthly journey with you. Calvert will come through this...he has too much spunk and fire to let this keep him down!!
I'll be sending you and sweet Calvert hugs and sending up a prayer to Calvert's Tripawd brothers and sisters to watch over him.

Doggone it Calvert!! You didn't feel like having an amputation was getting you enough attention so you start up with someting else?? Not cool!
To know that he is feeling great and not showing any sysmptons is REALLY, REALLY good news!!
Now, I don't know specifics of your Calvert's issues, but there is a whole lot of i nformation on here from dogs and cats who hsve had kiney renal failure where symptoms were already SHOWING....AND....AND....with supportive therapy they had a good quality life for YEARS...YEARS!!!
Your Calvert is so lucky to have you as his human! As Laurie said, Calvert has too much spunk and fire to let anything slow him down!!!
Would LOVE to see somempictures and videos of this cutie pie!! I remember the start of his journey so well and can't wait to see hi.!!
Love and hugs to all!!!!

Dang I'm sorry to have this wrench thrown into things, but like Sally said, it's a manageable condition that can be controlled. I'm glad your vet is consulting with the university, that's pawesome. Please let us know what treatment s/he comes up with, the more info here the better to help others. You can search the forums for "renal failure" and find lots of results from others.
Smooches to Calvert, he's still got a lot of lovin & livin' to do so we'll keep on celebrating in his honor, he's amazing!

After reviewing Calverts history and labwork, the K-state internal medicine specialist contacted my vet with Calvert's prognosis. It is very grim. Kidney Dysplasia is his diagnosis. He has 1 year, maximum, left with me. This is a congenital disorder. There was never anything anyone could have done. His kidneys just never developed properly. He is on the Hills prescription K/D diet, Benazepril for blood pressure, and he will begin a phosphate binder as soon as my vet finds the best one. These steps are just palliative care. So, bring on the year. We have lots to do. And a whole life to live in the period of 1 year. So we're living in the moment, because tomorrow is no longer promised.
Your positivity comes through in your words .... I am sorry about the diagnosis but I love that you are going to live each day to the fullest!!! Bring on the adventures with Calvert! We're all in this with you!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
