That's just crazy! I'm so sorry that this is happening to Reign and you have every reason to be cra-cra!!

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

I'm so sorry to hear that sweet Reign is back in the hospital.  I will be sending her healing thoughts that the abscess can get straightened out soon so she can get back home.  I know when my Leland had to be hospitalized for 4 days due to an infection that the hospital couldn't get under control which ultimately led to his amputation...my hubby and I were complete wrecks not having our baby with us.

Keeping you all in my thoughts

May you finally be healthy and running free at the Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again my sweet boy!

It so odd that she was only home for around 36 hours and how quickly I got use to her being here. I'm trying to get all of my anger out now before she gets back home. My other dogs were so confused when we came home without her again. Reese my other female cried while looking for her and my anger spiked again.  The doctor called to let me know she only had to open 1/3 of the incision since the front part of it looks really good. She said the pocket was deeper than she expected and she found some tissue damage but she cleaned it up and packed it. They will change the dressing in the morning so we can visit tomorrow. She's thinking 1-2 days of this and hopefully the lab and pathology reports come back so we know she on the right antibiotics and she can come home again. (The doctor did all of this on her lunch break since she had a booked schedule already.)  I just don't want to get my hopes up and deal with it if she doesn't get released on Saturday. She thinks Reign's obsession with that spot should calm down and she will be a lot more comfortable. I really do like this doctor since she almost overloads me on information and it seems like she really wants to figure out what is the exact cause of all of this. the bad part is she does just surgery so we are still looking for a new vet.

Reign has become a celebrity in the small town we live in. Every day someone tells me new tells me the were at the store/gym/bank etc that they hear someone talking about the little dog who lost her leg. They always make sure to explain that this isn't the end of her life and will live a full life. So this isn't just a learning experience for my family but for many

Wow, I can't believe it either. I'm sorry!

I really like your vet, and as mad as you are, I can tell that you and the whole  pack will use this experience for good, and teach others how to make the most of a hard situation like this. There's no doubt that when things like this happens it really, really sucks, but at least your vet is great and she's in good hands.

Just curious though, has that area been tested for MRSA? Might be a good idea to ask your vet if they haven't mentioned it?

I guess little Reign was trying to get to those stitches! She knew there was an infection that needed to get out of there! Smart, smart girl!

The fact that you aren't exploding is quite amazing! The stress of this journey...the diagnosis...the decision to amputate...the surgery...the recovery...and now this...grrrrrr!

She is in the best place though and clearly she has the staff wrapped around her paw! I love that Reign has already gained ROCK STAR status in your community...she certainly is a ROCK STAR here in the Tripawd community!

Reign is resting comfortably, so maybe you can now too. Keeping all laws crossed for a quick recovery and an antibiotic that is efficient and effective! Unfortunately, this kind of temporary set back does happen, but it sounds like your vet is on top of things.

Stay connected and update when you can.

Sending lots of hugs and love!

No real news yet. They changed the bandage and said its looking good. No test results yet.. I asked  about MRSA and the tech wasn't sure about exactly what all was being looked for. So when we go to visit later I will find out and fingers crossed hopefully test results will be back. Since I can't focus on much else I wrote out Reigns story up to this point on her blog.

Thank you again everyone.

What ever doesn't kill us makes us stronger right? While we were visiting Reign my mother had to take my daughter to the ER. She's ok! We thought kidney infection but she just has a virus so everything is ok. She 's 18 but as she puts it she's my only non fur baby lol

Our visit with Reign was far from the best. She wasn't happy to see us and wouldn't even look at me. She let my husband hold her but didn't try to walk or even wag her tail. She did eat a good bit for me. At one point she started fussing and we thought she had to pee so Steve sat her on the floor and she laid on her good side and screamed. I've never heard her scream in pain before.( Only when she was trying to get out of her nails being trimmed and that was all drama) It only lasted for a couple seconds but I think every emotion shot through me. Steve picked her back up and she was fine and ate a little more for me. Our visit was shorter than I wanted but she was due for meds and a warm compress. We told the tech about it and she said they haven't heard her cry out at all. So we have many ideas but that's it only ideas. Muscle spasm/cramp, the area where the absess is could be very uncomfortable, she could have needed her pain meds( they changed her schedule due to the cleaning and replacing ) or even phantom pain . I try to stay as positive as I could while we were there but it's hard when it seems like she has made a step backwards.

when I made my nightly check in call the tech said Reign was in her lap with a warm compress and had showed no signs of pain with her. She had been out to potty ( no poop since Monday)  and was walking good. She ate a couple bites of chicken for her but since she had eaten a good amount for us she wasn't concerned. So Steve spent most of the night trying to convince me we just visited at a bad time. This was the latest we've ever gone ( rush hour traffic yay!). I'm now waiting for the doctor to call so I can ask her about all of this. Today is 1 week since her surgery and I cant go see her today. Steve is working a 24 hour shift and there's no way I can handle a visit by myself and my daughter is still feeling pretty sick. But if she's not coming home tomorrow I get to see her.

Alrighty, you are definitely getting an award for surviving the "ups and downs" of the stupid roller coaster ride called "recovery"! Having a visit that didn't go well must stinks! Steve's observation about bad timing is spot on.

The yelling certainly does sou d like phantom pain ....comes and goes quicky. It could also be as you me tiined, the abcess hurting. I know it was so hard to see her hurt like that, but I'm glad it went away quickly.

She is eating some...she's peeing...walking.....all good! clap Now we need to get the pooping pawty going and I bet she will feel a lot better! Ask the vet about givi g her some canned pumpkin...the real stuff, not pie filling (although she might eat that better). Yeah, I think pooping will help with the appetite too.

I so hope she can come home Saturday. Home heals. Update if you can after you talk to the vet. Oh, and be sure and ask about the MRSA test.

We are all cheering for Reign! Oh gosh...and your non-furbaby daighter too! You're doing a great mob of hanging in there!

Love and hugs!

Ok update from Doctor.  Reign's bandage change was really good today. Yesterday she was slightly concerned since it wasnt completely  bleeding healthy. But today it looked really good. They will be keeping her until Monday and continue bandage changes Saturday and Sunday. I did finally get to ask about mrsa. Yes the culture she sent out is for everything. She did say mrsa was rare and the one they see more in animals is MRSP and that still isn't common. I can't help but think whatever it is she picked it up at that first vet that started all of this. They will compare the biopsy from the leg and the culture to see if whatever it is turns up in both.( Have I mentioned lately how much I hate that first vet!?! ) I mentioned the screaming that happened yesterday and she agreed it could be any of the things I listed but she's thinking that the wet to dry bandage does stick a little and she could've moved and it pulled. They've been watching/ listening since yesterday and she hasn't done it again.  They also didnt give her anything to wake her up after bandage change since they gave her sonething for pain so she could rest. So that woukd be the most likey reason she wasnt herself.

The doctor did tell me a funny story!

When she came in this morning the tech had 4 or 5 beds piled up with our princess Reign right in the middle, looking quite proud of herself. The tech explained Reign needed a throne and wanted to make sure she was comfy. This was the same tech that talked to me for 25 minutes when I called this morning. So the doctor agrees that Reign has minions.

I have always referred to Reign as Princess but I'm starting to call her the million dollar dog! So Monday is the soonest she will be back home and hopefully my daughter will be feeling better tomorrow so I can go see Reign. If not Steve is going to go without me. I think I covered everything lol as I've said before the doctor gives me so much info it takes awhile to process everything

Pawesome! Sounds like Reign is in good hands, and your vet clinic deserves some free Tripawds brochures to help other concerned pet parents going through the same thing.

You did an EXCELLENT job of covering everyting!! Thank you! I know this seems scary and daunting, but this kind of craaaap does happen!!

I LOVE the visual of the MILION DOLLAR PRINCESS on her throne!

It sounds like the antibiotics are starting to do their job! Really glad the bandage changes are showing healing.

Oh! Popping! What about pooping? Even if she poops at the vet we still like to do the HOPPY POOPY DANCE!

I know it sounds like we are paranoid about MRSA , but one way that our wonderful ANGEL TY continues to share his life affirming legacy is alerting that MRSA does happen....and he did beat it! Another victorious over MRSA is Bud! We do see it here. And I understand your FRUSTRATION (putting it mildy) with your first vet and don't blame you!

Okay....we'll be looking forward to the next update after you or Steve, or both, get to visit Reign!! Paws crossed both of you can have a good visit....and human non furbaby gets better too!

Love and hugs!!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

PS...Be sure and devour chocolate...you deserve a sugar binge!

Did my 10pm check in call and SHE POOPED!!!!!! It was little but it was something! I think they have a list of my questions lol. Every time I call at night they are almost giving me all the answers to my standard questions before I ask them.

MRSA is scary and since my husband works in a hospital I completely understand the concern! From the way the doctor explained is this is the standard test panel they send out when it comes to absesses. I don't think they would want that floating around in any of the the animals

Thanks for reminding me about the brochures!  I will add that to my visiting questions list!

I finally get to go to bed since my daughter's temp finally broke an hour ago. I will update after the visit with Reign tomorrow. Steve said he would face time with me while he was there if I can't go but fingers crossed my daughter is over this bug!

Oy vey just catching up on things. I'm glad all of the kids are on the mend, you have all bee through so much!

Happy that your vet did the comprehensive culture test. It's rare, for sure, but we've seen at least 3 dogs in 6 years here with it, so it scares us.

I'll tell ya something that may help your emotional state.... Can't blame you at all for being so mad at that first vet (and I can relate, our Jerry was misdiagnosed by his first vet and I was mad for a long time too), but one of the best things you can do right now is to try to put it behind you and let go of the anger. You don't have to pretend it didn't happen, but by letting go of anger you put more room in your heart for joy and happiness, and Reign will really sense that. So whenever you start to feel mad, try your best to look at how things are today, and how she's doing (so much better!) and see if that helps you all move forward.

I hope you guys have a relaxing weekend. She'll be home soon and everyone can mend together!
