For any Newf parent who comes across this, yes they can still wrestle! This is Nicky, eight, and his best friend Chief, who is about three years old. I love to watch them together, big, social, gentle dogs, who really want to keep the game going more than they want to win. Chief is a dog park friend but we invited him and his mom to a cider pressing on our farm. What a treat for Nicholas! The play went off and on all day and when Nicky got tired, Chief stopped and waited.
I think this video is on some kind of continuous loop, so stop it any time...
Nicky had his CT scan on October 24. It has been five months since his tumor was detected and four and a half months since his amputation. He had the Yale vaccine early on and then has had 3 weeks of metronomic oral chemo spread over the last 6 weeks. I was expecting some spread, not serious mets because he is so alert and active, but to my surprise the oncologist confirmed that he has no visible lung mets at all! Such happy news.
ADORABLE! I could watch it over and over! It's so entertaining. Not only do we see Nicky wrestling away (who's the other cutie?), but that apple peeling doohickey is really fun to see also!
YAY for the celebratory news, that is really fantastic to know he got clear scans.
Nicky, keep on rockin & kicking butt! You're showing the world what giant 3-leggers are made of.
CONGRATULATIONS NICHOLAS👏👏👏 We looooove good news around here!👍
To help us celebrate we got to see this joyous video of Nick playing with Chief Nicky knew how to handle this youngster with some slick moves twists and bop and weave.
Keep-on keeping on Nicky! You are such an inspiration

Priceless video! Nicky and Ollie are such good pals to Sam. They didn't even try and interfere with Sam''s "construction".
Really is a sweet video. Thanks for sharing

A wonderful day for Nicholas! Everyone staying in the house went to the ocean together, including Nicky and Ollie. The sun was shining, the tide was ebbing with an occasional big wave. It was like a huge party, We rarely take him out in crowds, so I think this is how he must have thought of it and he ran back and forth greeting everyone as we walked along and got lots and lots of hugs from new people gathered around him. Our son is 6'5" , Nick is 30" at the withers, I think Nick enjoys being a medium sized dog when they are together!
He was such a good Newf, he was always careful to know where I was (behind usually), kept a watchful eye on a lone kayaker way out in the surf (He did not approve} and told a little boy climbing up a cliff to listen to his frantic mother and come down immediately (the little boy did) And then there was a restaurant. Nicky has never been in a restaurant for space reasons but this was outside next to the beach. They bring you food!!!! Lots of it!!
So I think this was the happiest day of Nicky's life, he was pretty tired out by the end of the day when we made this video, but he didn't want it to end. And for all those wondering about amputation, he would have missed this day had we not gone ahead, almost five months now, I've stopped keeping track. Not that everyone's circumstances are the same, but it's worth thinking about.
That is wonderful to read! And yes, before you even said it, as i was reading, i thought to myself that Nicholas would have missed this day had you chosen not to do amputation and treatment. I think that to myself about Ophelia a lot too. This post put a smile on my face. 🙂
Love how you described Nicky’s day as one of the happiest of his life. Nicky gets to be Nicky. Like you said, had it not been for the amputation he would never have experienced the joy of that day….and all the days he has been pain free. Such an inspiration on somay levels😎
