Hi Friends,

I'm Beth.  Depeche is my retired racer Greyhound who had her right leg amputated on Friday.

She was limping for a few days, which isn't usually cause for alarm as she loves to dig and occasionally gets a little "boo boo paw" that resolves within a day or two.

Last week was different.  She continually placed her paw in my hand and hyperventilated. After that, it all happened so fast!

Monday (this past) we went to the vet.  By X-ray and physical exam, she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma.  On Wednesday we saw a canine cancer specialist who verified the diagnosis.  Thurs: pre op bloodwork.  Friday: surgery. Saturday: home.

Although it looks like no metastasis, we shall see.  She will have four rounds of chemo and, should all go as planned, she'll enter the UPenn protocol (vaccine trial)

Yesterday, I was a mess. I wondered if I had made the right decision for my darling Depeche.  She looked so mutilated and uncomfortable.

Today, she walked with assistance first thing in the morning,  She initiated it.  Later today, we had company.  Depeche was wagging her tail and, for the first time in days, wasn't hyperventilating and didn't look afraid.

A few hours ago, she independently stood up, walked to her sofa, and hopped up!  She looks so happy and proud.  I am, too.

Im hoping that she'll have a comfortable night (pain medicated with Neurontin and Tramadol) and that the worst is behind us.

One week ago, she wasn't even diagnosed.  This has been rough, but the option was not what she and I wanted.  She's strong and otherwise healthy, and so, so happy and playful.

Still, my head is (figuratively) spinning.  I'm grateful that the oncologist introduced me to this wonderful resource site.

Hi and Welcome Beth and Depeche, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I hope I didn't confuse you moving your post here- Depeche deserves her own thread to share her story so it doesn't get mixed up with another pup.

You have had quite a week! The diagnosis is hard to hear and with all the choices to make- it is overwhelming.  My pug Maggie had already had one mast cell tumor so I wasn't totally surprised when my vet said the word cancer, but after she said the word 'amputation', well I don't think I heard another word she said.

She sounds like she is doing well so far- but many pups have a bit of a crash a few days after they come home.  Hopefully Depeche isn't one of them, but don't be surprised the first couple weeks is often a roller coaster ride.  And you might want to keep her off the furniture for a couple weeks- our surgeon said only short, leashed walks for potty and no jumping for the first two weeks.

I'm sorry you had to find us, but this is the best place to be when dealing with amputation and cancer.  We have been there and can help.

Hi Beth and Depeche, welcome. I hope you don't mind I moved your post here but you both deserve to have your very own Discussion Forum topic so we can better support you on this journey.

That's really neat to know that she's getting around pretty well and looking happy too! It sounds like she is getting some greyt care at UPenn. You can't ask for better care than the pawesome docs there and if you get care with Dr. Mason, well she's a rock star in our book!  Check out what she taught us this year at the American Animal Hospital Assn. Conference.

Greyhounds have such a strong spirit when it comes to fighting this disease. Check out some greyt Tripawds who have been a part of our community, you'll find their stories so inspawrational!

You may get a bit of a crash around day 3 - 5 when the hospital meds wear off, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.  Most dogs show real improvement when the staples come out, about day 10.  And great news that you got into the vaccine trial!  It looks really promising.  Ditto the comments above on the sofa.  We barricaded ours with big pillows.  By the time he had the energy to knock them all off (week 3, after staples came out), I figured he was ready to get up.  And don't worry about how she looks now - the incision will heal, her fur will grow back, and you will see her start being just a dog again!  For now, just cuddle and love her.  Keep an eye on pain symptoms, and remember that sleep is the best thing for her right now.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Hi Beth ~

Welcome to the club that none of us really wanted to join!  We're looking forward to more pictures of your Depeche.  What a smart girl she is to show you what was hurting her heart  This is definitely a whirlwind for you.  How wonderful that your oncologist sent you to us!  This is the best place for support - we have all been in your shoes.  The next couple of weeks will be a roller coaster for both of you, but you will get through it.  Stay on top of the pain medication schedule, make sure you give them around the clock for adequate coverage.  You can use an ice pack, with a towel or wash cloth over the incision, for about 20 minutes a couple times a day to help with swelling.  She may not want to eat her regular food for a little bit, that's ok.  Most of us give them whatever they will take.  For Murphy, I cooked some rice and poured chicken broth over it, then added some chunks of chicken to it.  That also helped to make sure that he got some fluids.

Oh my goodness!  I am overwhelmed with gratitude!  I didn't expect to get such lovely replies so quickly. Thank you so much.

Depeche's is Dr Rita Ho at the HOPE Canine Cancer Center in Norwalk, Connecticut. She's very special, as it does take a golden heart to care for dogs with cancer, and their humans, too.

Ill be home with Depeche all summer.  We also have two Italian Greyhounds and three cats.  Depeche is the Grand Dame of the house.  She has the sweetest disposition which, although common for her breed, is particularly so with her.  She had never been unwell before this.

I knew.  Soon as I saw the pain signs she exhibited, I knew it was osteosarcoma. I'm thankful we didn't go the common route of misdiagnosis.

She has been eating, although small, frequent meals rather-than two full servings.  Her water intake in fine, too.  The Neurontin makes her thirsty.  Her pain med schedule causes me no problem and her vet assures me that she will be prescribed the right dose long as she requires it.  We have a wonderful vet along with her oncologist.

Right now, 12:30-ish my time, Depeche is in her bed which has been placed next to mine.  For the first night since she began to show signs of pain, she is sleeping without hyperventilating and isn't restless.  I was awake all last night with her, my sweet girl.  Tonight, we both have a sense of relief.

I do have pics and videos on my Facebook page.  Idk if there's a way to link this site to FB. I'm still a newbie trying to navigate my way around all of this.

Again, many thanks.   I know this goes without saying, but I love my Depeche with an uncommon depth.  I've been through a lot of challenges since she's been with me, and she's never left my side.  Now it's my turn to do the same for her, and I shall.

When I adopted her, I promised her and the Lord that I'd do the best for her until her last day. It gives me comfort to believe that, painful as a decision this has been, that I'm honoring my vow.  I think we are going to be fine. We're not there yet, but we are strong and determined.  She deserves the best that I have.

Hi and welcome Beth & Depeche!

I'm so sorry you find yourself here, but there really is no better place for support and advice.

I have a real soft spot for greyhounds, ever since my first greyhound Millie accidentally stumbled into our lives when I was 16. We were supposed to be taking care of her temporarily for only two weeks while a friend was trying to find a new home for her after being retired from racing, needless to say, we took her into our hearts and couldn't bear to her go, she lived out the rest of her retirement with us, surrounded by fields to run in and lots of lazing around in the sun. I had never really considered a greyhound before that but they are such sweet and gentle souls, so full of character. When Millie earned her wings we couldn't think of a better way to honour her memory than adopt another retired greyhound needing a loving forever home, we knew that is what she would have wanted. And so she sent us Shamus...he's a bit feral and totally loopylaughingbut he's as sweet as they come and we wouldn't change him. Him and our Tripawd Beau are inseparable friends.

Depeche looks absolutely adorable, I love her avatar so much! It sounds like you are doing an awesome job with her, the first few weeks are no picnic but once you're past the recovery stage I'm in no doubt Depeche is going to rock it on 3 legs!

Keep us posted, sending healing thoughts your way

Oh what a great clinic you're working with. Dr. Ho works with Dr. Intile, one of our favorite oncologists. We sent them some of our Tripawds Amputation Information Brochures a while back. Let us know if you don't see any in the office and we'll send some more over.

It's wonderful that her pain is managed and under control. What a lucky girl to get you home all summer, she will have such a great recovery.

As for linking to FB, you can definitely embed FB photos here (here are instructions for adding images to the Forums), but FB video will not embed on other websites. YouTube, Photobucket and Vimeo will. Let me know if you have any questions OK?

Here's to a good week ahead for both of you. Keep us posted.

Again, thanks ❤️

Yes, HOPE Center/ Dr Ho have brochures on tripaws. Along with a packet of info and lots of invoices, instructions, et al that I've enmassed this past week, the brochure lays.

Even the Facebook pics will have to wait a while. I'm so tired that little things seem huge still.

During the night, I was awakened heating Depeche's collar tags jingle. We all know that sound, right?

I opened my eyes to the most-delightful sight: Depeche was doing that spin around thing.  She'd been repositioning independently since she came home Sat eve, but this was the first time she's done that adorable dog thing since she developed osteosarcoma.

She also ate a little breakfast, licked my face, and wagged her tail.  She's napping now.

My long history as an RN is making caring for my beloved less difficult, I think.  My daughter is in college majoring in nursing, too.  What she lacks in skill she makes up for in compassion.  We are doing okay, with moments of tears and of joy.

Id like to know more about the harnesses I see on this site. Any/ all subjective and objective thoughts welcomed, please.

Last, if not against the rules, I'd like to share my Facebook name so anyone can see Depeche's pics and videos, and friend request me. Any dog and cat lover is a friend ❤️

The vet called first thing this morning to check on us.

Our Iggies (Italian Greyhounds) are being weird, but they're always a bit weird anyhow.

Thanks again for being here.

Re: hopping up on her sofa.

She got up, walked, and was there before we got to her. She loves to chill on her sofa and be in the center of "the action", so we'll lift her and sit with her should/ when she wants. It's a big, open, sunny living room and she's always loved hanging there.  She's quite a dog, my gal ❤️

Big fan of the Ruffwear Webmaster Plus harness.  Nice padding on chest so I can lift him without straps cutting into his body.  I also clip the leash onto the back so it stays up and away from him legs as he hops.  He reacts to it just as he does his collar - gets all excited.  And he can roll and do all his normal doggie things in it.

Oh yeah, another nurse!  smileyWe come in handy around here!  lol

I also like the Webmaster Ruffwear harness for Murphy.  The handle on top makes it easy to help him in & out of the car or anyplace else you might need to help reduce the weight on the good front leg.  We don't have the new part, the brush guard, which is supposed to help prevent it from slipping, but it still works great.

There's quite a few of us that are also connected on facebook!  Tripawds has a facebook page also.

So glad that Depeche is doing well big-grin

Aww I'm so glad to hear they're using the brochures 🙂

Friending on Facebook is definitely not against the rules, thanks for checking though.

As for the harnesses, I'm pretty sure you've seen the Tripawds Gear blog right? Lots of harness info there.

Depeche sounds completely delightful. What a lucky girl to have a nurse for a mom. And yay for having another one in our community, your knowledge is so helpful.
