Hey all,

This is my first post here. Some back story - My 5 year old yellow lab came out of his crate in the morning in February very lame and his whole right front leg swollen. Nothing had precipitated this event and we ended up calling our primary vet. The problem here is that the only vet we like at the office is so popular we never get to see her for sick visits - so we saw someone else. This vet felt that he must have injured himself even tho he was completely fine before going into his crate the night before. So we go home and rest him. A few days later he seems to be limping less but we notice a little bump forming on the lateral aspect of his elbow. So we go back to the vet again, see the same one and he says “he must have banged it”, we then asked for xrays as this seemed super peculiar to us but he refused saying he didn’t need them. Over the next month he stops limping but the bump is still there and possibly growing. We go a 3rd time to this same vet and they again refuse xrays. The bump is now much larger.

Covid hits. I am an icu nurse and I am working crazy hours. Our pup starts limping again and we make an appt for a second opinion at another vet practice. They see him first week of May and automatically want to do xrays. He has his xrays and the office immediately tells us they suspect cancer but that they want to send out the films to the local animal hospital who has a board certified radiologist bc it’s unusual for a 5 year old dog to have cancer. The films are sent out and we are called and told - the quality of the films aren’t that great and they tell us he has elbow dysplasia.

We hunt for surgeons in our area that handle elbow dysplasia. Not many. Made even harder by covid where many places are not doing any orthopedic. We end up finding 2 surgeons both over 1.5hrs away from us to see our pup. We made appts May 15 and first available appts were 6/9 and 7/1.

We go to his first consult and this surgeon says his xrays look funny but then says he’s too young for cancer. He does have elbow dysplasia but this bump on his arm doesn’t go along with that. This surgeon thinks he has a muscle tear and books him for repeat xrays and targeted ultrasound on 7/15 (!!!??!!!)

We now decide to go to his second consult 7/1 at MSPCA Angell in Boston (tufts was emergency only!) and immediately the surgeon calls us and tells us his xrays look very suspicious and that he even ran down the hall to see the radiologist and we are not worrying about this elbow dysplasia but cancer instead.

So 7/10 he goes back to repeat xrays of right leg and chest, tissue and fluid biopsies. 7/16 we learn he has cancer. His chest X-ray was clear. We are looking at histiocytic sarcoma or synovial cell sarcoma. They sent out his tissue biopsy for additional testing to differentiate type. His oncology appt is 7/29 and they will do an abdominal ultrasound for staging.

It has been 5 months since we noticed symptoms. I am physically sick knowing my 5 year old lab might have this horrible cancer. We are now praying it is synovial cell type because he could have a relatively long life with that one - where the other is known to be super aggressive. We have some peace knowing from May to June - his xrays did not have any noticeable changes.

We are now discussing amputation as treatment. He already seems a little bummed out - his elbow site is bothering him. Plus the fluid is already accumulating again and one of his sutures popped. The surgeon said that he isn’t surprised with how much crap was in there that this is happening and that if we have to we can amp prior to the onc appt but he would like to see if we can wait to see what they recommend. It is possible if he does have spread they would not recommend amp at all.

I am wondering if anyone with experience with an amp can help me. I’m having trouble coming to terms about the recovery and how much pain I’m causing him with this surgery. Is there anything special I can prepare for with getting the house ready? Any particular harnesses? I have another lab as well and he really misses playing with her.

If you got this far then you deserve a medal. I might have rambled a bit but I am super sad and frustrated that I tried so hard to be a good advocate for my dog but I came up short.

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I'm sorry your vet path was so rocky but really it's not unusual for dogs to be mis-diagnosed for months.  And during these times- well I can't imagine how hard it is to deal with this.  Give yourself credit for changing vets and pushing until you got a diagnosis!

You might want to look through the Required Reading List for links that should answer lots of your questions.

I have to run right now but I wanted to get your post approved so others can see it and provide support.

Oh- and Nurses are heroes in my book in the best of times- thank you for what you do and I pray you stay safe and healthy.

Oh gosh YOU deserve a medal my friend. Thank you for all you are doing for people right now, and now your sweet pup. Things are crazy all over and to have to deal with cancer at the same time, well it's a lot to cope with. We are glad you found us and hope to make things easier for you. I moved your post here because it sounds like there are a lot of undecideds (is that a word? lol!) right now, hope that was OK. Are you for sure amputating if xrays come back clear? I wasn't sure.

First off, you are in GREAT care at Angell. The runaround you experienced at first was a drag but at least the road led you this practice, they are one of the best in the nation, you couldn't ask for better care. And Theodore can't ask for better care than a mom who is an ICU nurse. No matter what, you've got this!

Cancer sucks all around, but even if the path comes back with a histiocytic diagnosis, there is hope. We've had quite a few members' dogs live much longer than the predicted prognosis for this cancer. Some have beaten the odds by years, others haven’t. But to get a good idea of what is was like, you can read their stories:

Barney B ‘s story: https://tripawd.....r-suvivor/

Murphy’s story: https://murphyh.....pawds.com/

Bentley’s story: https://honeybb.....pawds.com/

And many more:

Yes there are PLENTY of things you can do to help the transition to life on three legs. Have you seen Jerry's Required Reading List ? Or the Tripawds e-books library. Our book Three Legs and a Spare has just been revised and the new edition should be uploaded by Monday so hang in there if you want to get your hands on a brand new edition. Meanwhile, our What to Expect series of article can also provide much guidance while you wait to see how the week plays out.

I hope this helps. Sorry to make it so short, I need to run now but stay tuned for feedback from the community! Your future posts won't need approval so post away.

Thank you both for the warm welcome!

Jerry, I started looking at the reading list before the forums and I got a little overwhelmed. I will take a look at it again this week. I’ve started doing some browsing through the forums and there is a lot of great info!

I’m happy to hear Angell has a good reputation. It’s so hard to not even be able to go in with him - esp with such sensitive appts. I have already started my list of questions for the oncologist when they call us from the exam room. I really can’t complain about Angell though - our surgeon is amazing - never kicks me off the phone and answers every silly question I have.

I’m trying to remain pawsitive and I have purchased his new ruffwear harness this weekend.

thank you again for the warm welcome. I am not going to read some of the blogs you linked! I know every dog is different - just like people - but the thought of losing my 5 year old dog to cancer just breaks my heart.

I'm sorry about your dog's diagnosis or lack of diagnosis and you not getting clear answers for 5 months! How stressful and especially with Covid on top of it!

I hope the clinics in your area can open up to allow humans to safely meet with the vet. I hope it gives you comfort to know that clinic staff love all pets and tend to have great relationships with them. My cat Mona enjoyed going to the vet clinic and being admired and passed around the clinic (she's not like that at home with visitors).

I hope you get some answers soon.

Ditto everyone's post!  As you can see, you are definitely  in the right place for support and information.

We under the kick in the gut when you first hear the diagnosis.   We understand  the love you and Theodore  have for each other.  We know you will do whatever  it takes to give him the best life possible!

For now, just keep things chunked down.  When you kmow more specifics you can formulate  a plan forward with his Vet team.

Is Theodore on any pain meds right now?  Guessing that he is, but maybe  he needs the dose adjusted??

Hang in there.  We are right by your side the whole way.  We'll be here thru surgery, thru recovery  and  with you for all the upc victor Theodore will be having!!

Would love more pics of his cute self and his avatar  buddy too!

Thank you!!! You know what my worst fear is? That something happens and we have to let him pass but we can’t find a mobile vet to do it at our house. Legit that’s my worst case scenario fear.

Thank you so much. I have so much stress at work, yet when I get home I feel so much stress and uneasiness about what’s going on with Theo. I keep telling my husband “ I need a plan”. Once I have a plan I will feel better about everything else. Also, I really need this leg amp to happen because everyday he has it, is another day the cancer can spread.  I need to emphasize that I would like amp sooner than later when we go to onc appt.

I know you guys might want to see my handsome boy. I’m on mobile and can’t seem to figure out how to upload a photo to this post. Do I have to post the photo somewhere else then post a link here?

We had that fear too. The best way to conquer fear is education, and creating a plan of action to be prepared for someday, hopefully a lonnnng time from now. Here's an article about how to prepare for pet loss before it happens. It's difficult to think about, but information is power, and it's calming in a weird way too.

Once I have a plan I will feel better about everything else.

Yep! For sure. The oncologists you are working with will help you get there.

I have already started my list of questions for the oncologist when they call us from the exam room

I forgot to share this Questions to Ask Your Oncologist article. Hope it helps.

I’m on mobile and can’t seem to figure out how to upload a photo to this post. Do I have to post the photo somewhere else then post a link here?

Yes, exactly!

This is how adding images to the Forums works.

  1. Upload pics to a photo sharing site like imgur.com or your own Tripawds blog!
  2. Right click and copy the Image URL or just copy the image if you’re on a phone
  3. Return to your Tripawds Forum post and paste the image URL (or the image itself) in your post. It should automatically appear.

If you’d like help figuring out the process let me know.

Surgeon just called and it has been verified with the additional marker that he in fact has histiocytic sarcoma smiley13

This is certainly not the outcome we were looking for. His surgeon told me to not get ahead of myself that the localized type has better outcomes than disseminated. He would like to wait till onc appt with the staging ultrasound to take his leg. He said he will have no problem fitting him in as he could book as an emergency case if he had to. I did touch base with Onc and they have no sooner appts but if they get a cancellation they would call.

Here is Theodore - or as he likes to be called “Teddy”

Awww what sweet photos! Teddy and Pippa are adorable.

I'm sorry about the diagnosis. It's always heartbreaking to get one that involves cancer, but your vet is right: don't get ahead of yourself OK? You've got a great team working on your side, and Teddy doesn't know what was on the path report. He's still the same dog and he will be afterward too, if you proceed with amputation. Breathe, follow his lead and know that this day, right here and now, is all that matters. We call this learning how to Be More Dog . You can do it!

Where was that river photo taken? Love that scenery!

Ditto Jerry.  And ditto the Vet "not to get ahead of yourself".  It's extremely hard to be patient, but your Vet is  right.   Once he has all the information,  then you and Teddy's team can proceed on a path of treatment that gives Theodore the best life possible!

And clearly from the look of those pictures, he already has a great life with you and Pippa!  Beautiful  pups!!

Now go hug Teddy and kmow that all os wellmin his world......and will be for a  very long time!!

Hi Teddy!

i wanted to chime in as my dog Penny Lane was also diagnosed with right elbow HS. She’s older (now 11) than Teddy but she started limping in June of 2019. We were told it was arthritis until Jan 2020when we noticed a mass. We have no idea to this day if the limping was the original sign of cancer or increased inflammation precipitated the HS. Either way, she had amputation and lymph node dissection in February and started chemo 2 weeks later. She has done beautifully with the amp but has had several setbacks including very severe cytopenias. It hasn’t been easy (or cheap) and we know the odds are stacked against us but we’ve had 6 more months with our baby since the diagnosis. There is no right answer and I wish you all the best with your staging scan as you navigate these next steps. You are in our thoughts as we would not wish this diagnosis on anyone. Sending your sweet Teddy extra snuggles 🙂

Oh wow I am SO glad you chimed in with Penny's story, THANK YOU! It's so comforting to see how other dogs and their humans have coped. I'm thrilled she is doing well despite the challenges she's faced. Penny Lane you are PAWESOME!

A while back we published this blog post, which I forgot to mention earlier. I'm going to add Penny's name to it now:
