Dear all,
Do you have experience in giving Palladia to your cat? what side effects your cat have?
i am worried about Palladia use in my cat as it from my search through the Internet that the med could have severe side effects on cat. I would most likely start this med treatment next Monday (per vet's instructions, the treatment is Monday, Wednesday and Friday) but I don't want to get her miserable.
Pixie had amputation of right hind leg on 1/6/2020. Then, she went through two types of chemotherapies, Carboplatin and Doxorubicin. Now, the vet prescribes Palladia.
Hi and welcome. Your future posts won’t need approval so post away.
Sorry your kitty is fighting cancer, what was she diagnosed with?
How did she tolerate the other chemo treatments? As for Palladia or any type of chemotherapy, if you don’t like how it affects Pixie you can always stop. Most pets tolerate chemo very well with maybe just some mild nausea at first.
When it comes to chemotherapy in pets, quality of life is always the #1 priority. It’s not a requirement but statistically it gives pets a better chance to beat the odds.

Thank you for the approval. ^_^
Pixie was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in late 2019. She tolerated previous two IV chemo well with only a side effect, diarrhea. Every time, after she came home from the chemo, she demanded for food.
She recovered from the amputation pretty fast and acted just like a normal cat which was the reason i agreed to get her chemo. Every time, she came back from chemo, she demanded for food immediately. Looks quite healthy but unfortunately, two tiny small nodules were found after first run of chemo. during 2nd run of chemo, one is stable but another one is slightly larger. Recent x-ray shows mild progression of nodules. Sigh!
You are so welcome. So Pixie is one of those rare Tripawd cats with osteosarcoma? Well she's done pretty well so far, what a total rock star!
I'm sorry she has mets though. That's not "supposed" to happen with cats, but we see all kinds of crazy things happen with cancer. So that makes total sense why they are doing the Palladia. Is it part of a metronomics protocol with other medications?
If you haven't seen this topic about coping with lung metastasis you may want to check it out, there may be other treatments in there like inhalation chemotherapy (of course Pixie would have to be really chill to tolerate that), which you might want to discuss with your vet.

thank you for reply. I will definitely check that topic out. Yes, she is one of tripawd cats, she lost her right hind leg January 6, 2020. Palladia is the only med she needs to take. Of course, doctor prescribe Cerenia and one for diarrhea but only when needed. luckily, she loves pill pocket, at least for now. This morning, she was tricked by pill pocket. ^_^
She loves to chew on window blind strings. i really suspect that was the reason she got osteosarcoma. This month, she is 11 years old.
Oh that's good she will take the pill pockets! And to be eleven on three legs is so paweseome, she's amazing! Her care sounds really good too, it's nice that they gave you Cerenia as a just-in-case medication. We will keep our paws crossed that she doesn't! Let us know how she's doing.

thank you! definitely will update her status.
5/16/2021 Pixie's update
Sorry, i feel helpless. I always use "what if i have this disease whether I want to go through the medical treatment" to make judgement on the medical treatment of my cats. But i don't know now.
Pixie's bone cancer has spread to liver, my vet* confirmed this on 5/15 after lab works . Sigh, it is hard to accept that the cancer could go this far, liver!
Pixie is still acting normal, loves treats, yell at me for Vital Essential patties and freeze-dried chicken and loves me to rub her belly by standing on my lap. She developed this habit, being belly rubbed not long after she was diagnosed bone cancer.
Through email, the oncologist estimates that Pixie might have some mild discomfort and offers to put Pixie on Gabapentin at a regular basis. The oncologist also suggests additional chemotherapy with vinblastine. I have not replied email to him yet. not sure about the new IV chemotherapy. Sigh, I don't know how Pixie reacts while she is in oncologist's clinic. COVID-19 period, only curb side drop off. The reason i have this concern is because Pixie needs to take Gabapentin and Trazodone every time before goes to the oncology. I kind of suspect that Pixie is very nervous while she is in that clinic.
I made an appointment for 2nd opinion with another oncologist but the wait time is 6 weeks. sigh!
* She went oncologist for to follow-up check on 5/10. the oncologist took chest x-ray and blood work. I decided that her belly is too big and hard then I squeezed her in my vet's busy schedule on 5/12. My vet took x-ray** (saw abnormal liver) and drained her fluid (~245ml) then sent lab works for the liver and fluid. Understand that vets could not pay attention to patients' every detail. but, still I feel kind of disappointment to the oncologist because he did not mention liver problem in his 5/13 email, instead wrote me the result of March exam.
However, my main concern now is how to get Pixie to have the most comfortable days in the rest of her life, which including all medical treatments. The oncologist estimated (i sent him email 5/15) 2 to 6 months from not to the point where Pixie's quality of life begins to declines.
**The time, oncologist's x-ray reading was not came back yet.
i would like to share with you my Pixie's pictures. She is so good while being needled (acupuncture)
I know there are many of us here who can relate to how you feel. Cancer can be so unpredictable and mean, and it leaves us feeling out of control. When vets can't give answers, it makes it all feel worse. But know this; you are keeping Pixie's needs and quality of life at the top of all the decisions you make, that much is clear. Pat yourself on the back for this! All of the things you are doing, from seeking other opinions, to making sure her pain is managed, are excellent steps to take right now. She is so very lucky to have you on her side and in her heart!
If you suspect that more chemotherapy treatments are not something Pixie will appreciate, go with your gut feeling. I would want to know how that chemo the oncologist suggested would affect her prognosis and quality of life. In fact it reminds me of these Questions to Ask Your Oncologist that you may want to check out before you talk with one next.

Pixie is awesome, I love those photos! Would you mind if we put them in our Tripawds Gallery? Soooo many people don't think that cats are receptive to acupuncture. Which vet is she going to for treatments? Your regular vet?

Thank you for the quick reply. it really comforts me a lot.
in regarding posting Pixie's pictures on Tirpawds Gallery, sure, you are free to post them. I would love other cat owners to know about this too. The vet, Dr. Leong, is not my regular vet. She is my cats' acupunture go to place or i seek holistic treatment. If you are fine, i will post her infomation, please let me know.
The following picture shows needles clearly. total 8 needles, one was on her only leg. Wires are not used every time.

Pixie is 2nd of my cats to have acupunture and surprisingly, she tolerates it so good (no control needed). Once she even almost fell into sleep during a section, the vet told me. Pixie goes to acupuntures average twice a month.
Miri was the first one also Dr. Leong's first feline customer in acupunture. Miri was ok with the acupunture but i needed lightly to circle her in my arms. Miri was a FIV+ cat and sufferred from the FIV complications started her very young age, severe skin issue (hated Atopica), fever, allergy (yes, i got her allergy test 3 times) and not active (lethargic). Acupurnture helped her a lot. Miri was crossed on 1/19/2020 due to an aggressive lymphoma.
Aww thanks for the OK, and the new image. I agree, the more people who know that acupuncture is an option, the better. Please feel free to post Dr. Leong's info in our Tripawds Vet Specialists Referrals Topic, some day it will really help someone out.
I'm so sorry about Miri. She was so lucky to have someone like you who gave her such a good life and helped her feel better. Dr. Leong has a magic touch!
