Hi Steve - The fluid buildup is likely a seroma .  They are very common after surgery but usually nothing to worry about as they generally resolve on their own.  Griffin had several seromas that started around his belly (far from the incision site) and then migrated up to his chest around the incision.  My vet recommended warm compresses to help the body reabsorb the fluid.  And, who doesn't love belly rubs?!? Glad Ziva continues to do so well!  ~ Stacy

Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com

Thanks for the info Stacy. I kinda thought that might be what they are.

I wish I was as resilient as Ziva. I got a splinter in my finger the other day and it HURTS. I better take a nap lol!

She looks so happy outside! Glad to hear things are going well. And yep that does sound like a seroma . Check the area to make sure there's no weird smell or oozing but most likely the fluid buildup will just re-absorb back into the body. Do keep her as calm as you can though, and not moving around a whole lot. Seromas tend to happen in dogs that get too much activity right after surgery.

yup sounds like her. She’s been way to busy.  Me Vet has tweeted her meds a bit to slow her down and told me to slow her down. Message received.

the pictures are Ziva having one of her chew bone treats. She usually traps it in between her feet. I was amazed at how fast she figured out a new way to chew on it!!

  Thank everyone.

Okay, everybody  told you all about seromas, so I get to just say how beautiful  Ziva is and how wonderful it is to see her so happy and enjoying  herself😊

A front legger figures out how to chew a bone pretty quickly.   And clearly it didn't  stop Ziva!

You have a great Vet for recognizing  Ziva  may need to take it a vit slower still. That should help the seroma dissipate

    Day five Pupdate:

Ziva is still rocking this three legged thing. She defiantly has a sernoma and she will go visit her best friend Dr. Allen tomorrow at two. Dr. Allen said her bandage could be contributing a bit to the sernoma because the fluid can't go where it wants to be and I probably let her do a bit to much the first couple days. It's hard to tell them no when they just go and impress you with every step.

Meds are still the same but might change tomorrow. Dr. Allen may or may not replace the bandage depending on what she sees under there. I think stiches might have a few more days before they can come out. Sleeping is good and Ziva finally slept on her right side last night for the first time since surgery. She leaned up against the bed for balance but you can tell she's still not sure about that side.

Ok that the update for now and more will follow. Thank you all for the answers, patience, and support. I hope I can help others as you all have helped me and Ziva. 👍👍

And that's a good pupdate!  Thank you!

Laying on the incision  side is generally a good sign that the incision itself is not too painful.  So that's a good sign!  To give you a reference, my Happy Hannah, a big "fluffy" Bull Mastiff, took a couple of weeks before she lay on that side.

Let is know how tomorrow goes.

Aw, she looks so good! Glad to hear she's able to lay on her other side now. I can't imagine I'd be able to in her position. How is her appetite on Day 5?

Hi Steve!  I never thought about the bandage contributing to the seroma .  Griffin didn't have a bandage and I definitely let him do too much early on because like you, I found it hard to say no when he was trying so hard to be independent!  I'm glad to hear Ziva is doing so well and I look forward to more photos and videos!  ~ Stacy

Great going Ziva! I'm so happy to hear you're having an ideal recovery. Yeah, seromas are a bummer but they're pretty harmless. I hope your appointment is easy peasy tomorrow.

Zivas visit went very well bandage was removed permanently and Dr Allen said everything looks real good.

The Dr also said that Zivas seroma was caused more by the bandage than her over doing it. Seems the bandage had slipped and it was to tight in a couple areas. Either way bandage gone problem solved.

Her meds will stay the same for now and we should have a report back from the oncologist by weeks end. Then we can plan that part or Zivas treatment.

In about 7-10 days we will go,get her stiches out so that will be a nice milestone!

OH YEAH, LOOK AT THAT ZIPPER!!! Quite the incision. Ziva is still doing extremely well and happier every day and that's what counts!
