Vaccinate, heartworm, and "Frontline" just prior to or during chemo?

Jackson's amputation is today.  He may be starting chemo in a few weeks.  His annual vaccines are always at the start of Jan.  Do we get them?  Or, do we let his immune system struggle with cancer alone rather than fight multiple battles?  Do folks still give their pup heartworm meds during chemo, too?  FYI: we live in tick central, just 30min away from Lyme, CT and ticks are everywhere.  Jackson is a black dog with a double coat, so we've always vaccinated for Lyme Disease and used a Frontline-like product (I forget the name of it now, but it's not a natural product).

Thanks!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

This is a question for your vet. Our vet stopped all vaccinations after the amputation and chemo.  We traveled with Trouble a lot and he gave me a letter stating she was under veterinary care and exempt from vaccinations and included contact info if anyone needed to speak to him about it.  I never had to show the letter anywhere we went.

That's another great question, and one that's been discussed often. Here are some posts to check out about other folks' experiences. And yet one more to check out, about vaccines in general, where I said:

When I was fighting cancer, my pawrents debated whether or not to vaccinate me. While I did get a kennel cough vaccine, we skipped the rest of them. Recently, the AVMA has recommended that dogs with immune-compromised systems get excluded from rabies vaccinations and many holistic-minded vets lean toward not vaccinating a dog with cancer at all. You can read more here:

Rabies Vaccination for Cancer Dogs

Many vets are still following old protocols for vaccines. I personally don't think they are a good idea when you're fighting cancer, only because like you said, the body is already immune-compromised. I'm not a vet so please take that for what it's worth. Instead, I prefer titering (basically measuring the body's immunity to vaccine diseases) to vaccines in this situation.

When it comes to ticks and heartworm medications, that's a whole other ballgame. Here are two good nutrition blog posts about it. Avoiding fleas, ticks and heartworm without using chemicals is absolutely possible but takes a lot of dedication and commitment to following the direction of a holistic doc, feeding an excellent diet, daily grooming and keeping your home clean. Our pack has so far managed to avoid a flea and tick problem without using chemicals, but we choose to use heartworm meds because of where we spend most of our time, and we're not dealing with cancer in our dog Wyatt Ray .

If you decide not to pursue traditional vaccinations or flea/heartworm medications don't do it on your own. Find an excellent, qualified holistic veterinarian. In your part of the world I know there are quite a few to choose from. Our Resources Page has a directory where you can search for one.

We did not stop the heartworm meds.  We live in SE TX where you give it year round.  I used a flea/tick preventive only sporadically prior to the diagnosis when absolutely necessary.  After the diagnosis I don't recall using it at all - more my choice than the vet recommendation.

We stopped using Frontline when Max was on chemo because our oncologist basically just didn't think it was healthy.  We switched to an all natural product called Flea Treats (http://www.fleatreat.com/).  They worked, so maybe that's something you want to check out.  But I agree with Jerry & Shanna, also ask your vet and oncologist and get their opinions.

We don't have tick issues where we live, and we've never used any heartworm preventative, so I can't help you there.

Please update on Jackson's surgery today when you get a chance!  We'll be sending positive thoughts his way!!

We didn't vaccinate after cancer, either. And since studies are showing that dogs generally retain immunity after the puppy shots, I've not vaccinated my quad-pawed dog since those shots. I made the decision based on my research into actual veterinary research and recommendations, and my desire to avoid cancer to the degree I can influence it at all.

We only had a flea problem when Dakota brought a rabbit into the house and decided to slaughter it without my knowledge. The rabbit probably had a bazillion fleas on it, and I immediately went to the vet for Frontline for everyone. That was pre-cancer, but I couldn't think of any other solution, faced with that many fleas. Still a favorite memory...winker

Thanks maximutt for the link and the recommendation.  I've been searching for something that wasn't a chemical preventive for ticks - Emmi is a tick magnant. If there are ticks in a 10 mile radius, she will find them.

I haven't asked about the heartworm pills but since its below freezing i haven't given it to her.  My vet did say not to vaccinate Sassy as she wanted her immune system up and not to try to build antibodies for those shots.  Her shots were due in December and that is when she had her first chemo we will see what they say after Chemo.

Never had much of a flea or tick problem and cold so not using that product right now and my 2 are pretty much inside most of the time.
