Emma had her leg amputated Feb 2012 and has been doing great since then with no
chemo. We decided to finally take her to get vaccinations and her yearly check
up yesterday. We kept putting it off thinking she didn't have much time. Anyway
they did a geriatric blood panel and everything looked great. They did no X-rays
but her heart and lungs sounded good and lymph nodes were normal size. She
received her shots in her remaining back leg and we went home with a smile in
our face that our girl was doing so well.
However, yesterday evening she couldn't put any weight on her back leg and we
had to pull the sling out of the closet to help her with the steps. She would
not eat her dog food but I made her eggs and she gobbled those up. Could the
shots cause her to be sore on her back leg? Before her amputation she was still
able to put weight on her leg with cancer and last night she couldn't even do
that.

My first thought was the cancer has spread but it is quite the coincidence is
happened the same day as her shots.
Any advice or anyone heard of this happening?

I've heard of some complications before from shots, but never had a problem with it for our pup. What all shots did she get? We had a waiver from our onc so Abby didn't have to get her rabies vaccine again.

With the timing, it sure does seem like the shots caused the problem. Hopefully someone w/ some experience with this will reply. A call to the vet on Monday morning sounds in order, unless she's hopefully better by then?

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Emma, first off, congratulations on being a Tripawd Warrior Princess! That's so cool to hear you're doing great!

This sounds like a vaccination reaction to me. I'm not a vet so take that for what it's worth. What vaccines did she get?

Make sure she rests up today and if she's not better by tonight, call your vet in the morning. Actually, I think you should call your vet either way just to report this adverse reaction.

When I was fighting cancer, my pawrents debated whether or not to vaccinate me. While I did get a kennel cough vaccine, we skipped the rest of them. Recently, the AVMA has recommended that dogs with immune-compromised systems get excluded from rabies vaccinations and many holistic-minded vets lean toward not vaccinating a dog with cancer at all. You can read more here:

I feel very guilty for getting Emma her vaccinations after reading how it could compromise her immune system. I had no idea. I called out vet specialist who performed her amputation and he thinks it has to do with vaccines. She is doing much better later this morning and able to go back up and down the stairs but I am going to continue to keep an eye on her.

Don't blame yourself.  We can't know everything. We have to rely on the experts to guide us along the right path. Our vet opted not to do any vaccinations once Trouble was diagnosed.  It bothered me at first, but he assured me it was the way to go.  She was 10 at the time of diagnosis, and he didn't want to take any chances we didn't have to take.

I am happy to hear Emma is feeling better now.

Oh my gosh Beth I'm sorry, I hope I didn't make you feel guilty about it. Please don't blame yourself, you don't know what you don't know. None of us do and when it comes to cancer it's such a huge learning curve. When we started my Tripawds journey, we had no idea about so many things when it came to dog health, and that goes for vaccines. This is all stuff we learned much later, and even the latest research about vaccines and cancer that I shared with you is so new that most vets are only now incorporating it.

How is Emma doing today? I hope she's got her spunk back, please let us know.

No worries - Emma is back to her old self after 1 day. It was truely just a reaction to her vaccines and she was eating again and walking up and down the stairs. I am just happy it was just the vaccinations and nothing else. i will continue to keep an eye on her in the next few weeks but hopefully it will be uneventful. Thank you for everyone's comments and advice.

Boy, you really can find everything on this site. I received a note from my vet about Maggie's Lepto vaccine being due. I was pretty sure I wasn't going to do it but thought I would check with the group first. I had a 10 yr old border collie get a terrible reaction from a rabies shot. So I told the county she had died so I never had to give her another rabies shot. Not suggesting you should lie to the authorities but I think county officials AND vets are way behind on the negative aspects of "routine vaccinations". After much reading I stopped all vaccinations on my dogs, cats and horses at 10 years of age. I still give heartworm pills because I had a dog get heartworm and it is prevalent here. Thanks for the article Jerry.

Pain and/or swelling around the site of vaccination can be a common vaccine side effect. It really just depends on the dog. This is most likely what happened because the symptoms resolved the next day without medical intervention. My Chihuahua acted like he had a broken leg after getting his distemper combo vaccine, but now that I know he acts this way, I make sure that I give him benadryl before the vaccine and keep a few pain pills on hand for the next day. The AVMA has and is still working on changing their protocols on vaccines. That includes the information about the rabies vaccine (as seen in the article provided by Jerry) but, they have also reviewed other vaccines which is why the distemper combo is now being recommended only every three years after the puppy series is completed. Even with the AVMA's recommendations, there is a lot of controversy in the veterinary community about vaccine durations in the system, which is why individual vaccine protocols vary between vet practices. I will warn you that some vets are extremely reluctant to deal with Rabies vaccine waivers. I would talk to your vet about it and see what they have to say. If your vet is very traditional, ask around and try to find a vet in your area who is more open to alternative medicine and make a second opinion appointment with them. This way you can get both sides of the spectrum from a veterinary point of view, and then make an educated decision about what is right for you and your pet.

Maggie hasn't received any vaccinations since the cancer diagnosis either...she has a waiver for rabies.
