She’s feeling great! She loved the cake and the leftovers! We had two big days in a row. On Saturday, we (my husband, Lucy, and myself) went and took professional family photos at a local park, Lucy was a natural model! Then yesterday she had all sorts of birthday celebrations! Cake, a walk, and steak, then a little more cake!
We will see all the finished pictures on Wednesday. I will definitely post some when I can! The sneak peak photo made me tear up, well everything kinda makes me tear up right now. I’m not crying all the time like when she was first diagnosed, so that’s good, and I never do it in front of her.

We all understand the rollar coaster you are on. When Brownie and I was going thru this my bathroom was like a revolving door. It was where I would go to just let it all out. Brownie never saw me cry. I did write Brownie several letters, and I still do. It helps me get all the thoughts out of my head.

I did realize when I was in an upbeat mood Brownie did seem to do better. So just keep doing what you are doing with a positive attitude.

The most important thing is Lucy is happy, and looks like she is doing great! And it is clear to see how loved she is. Our pets can't ask for more then that.❤

Can't wait to see the photos.

My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019.  With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer.  I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud!  He will live forever in my Heart!

The roller coaster of emotions is rough!

I was struggling with the “do chemo or do nothing” thing, so I got an appointment with Dr. Loops for a homeopathic consult. Has anyone worked with him? Thoughts?

Oh yeah! For many years and mostly with great success. See these Tripawds Nutrition blog articles about him and just some of our members who have worked with Dr. Loops:

Can't wait to see those photos.  I remember  before I was on this joirney with my dog, and back in  the day when cameras were used with film (yeah, I'm old as dirt), I didn't  take that many pictures.  Once on thos joir ey with Happy Hannah, and with my Acer little tavletwith a front facing camera only, I started taking a lot of pictures and videos.  Of course, I had no screen to see where the camera was facing, so I have a lot pf photos of jist a foot or the sky with an ear.

Anyway, point being take pictures and videos all the time!!! Include selfies too with the pups!!   Doesn matter if you're in thos joirney or not, take pictures!!  They will be furever treasures!!!

Hugs

On the topic of holistic vets, do you have any recommendations or have you heard of any reputable holistic vets in Ontario, Canada?

Oh Miss Lucy! She gave us a big concern! She has been a bit lethargic and developed a gagging cough the last few days. She also started getting really goopy eyes too. Being the high anxiety tripawd mom that I am, we took her to vet today. She has conjunctivitis in both eyes! We have stuff to put in them now. The vet said her breathing rate, heart, and lungs all sound great. He suspects the cough is coming from her metastatic disease. I have a theory that it might be from the conjunctivitis (eyes, nose, throat all connected) and she has excess mucus she is trying to cough up. Can anyone describe the cough that happens from the mets? I think her and her dad over did it on a walk a few days ago, I’m going to move up her chiro appointment and see if an adjustment helps out her lethargy.

Griffin's had a pretty consistent gagging cough since early December.  Based on my description (see below), his oncologist believes it is caused by acid reflux.  He is currently taking 20mg famotidine (Pepcid) and 20mg omeprazole (Prilosec) daily, along with a supplement of slippery elm, which has reduced both the number and intensity of coughing episodes, which do not seem to distress him at all.

  • Griffin never coughs when he is being active or outside
  • Griffin almost never coughs when standing up
  • Griffin mostly coughs after sleeping/resting for a period of time
  • Griffin sometimes coughs soon after eating (meal or non-rawhide chew treat)
  • The cough is usually a loud, forceful exhalation followed by gagging/retching and swallowing (nothing is actually expelled)

Griffin has pretty significant tumor growths in his lungs, which I'm sure contributes to his cough, but given that he never coughs when exerting himself, I believe there is another underlying cause.  A classic sign of acid reflux in dogs is licking of bedding/rugs, which Griffin does occasionally now and never did previously.  I hope you get to the bottom of Lucy's cough soon!

Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com

I just saw your question. How about posting this in Veterinary Specialists Referrals to see if anyone knows someone? I think Kaiserin's mom might, they live in London.

Admin told me the good news, that's all pretty good considering! Sounds really manageable. Did you end up calling the hospice vet or your regular one?

Can anyone describe the cough that happens from the mets?

Remember all dogs are their own dogs but what Stacy described is spot-on for most dogs. It's a weird hack/cough, a little startling, you'll know it when you hear it. Jerry would cough when he lay down on the side where his mets were located, but not during the day.

I hope she gets to have some chiropractic magic soon!

Whaaaaaa? This kinda blew my mind. Where did you learn that Stacy? Jerry used to do that a LOT and we could never figure out why! Poor pupperz! We had no idea!

Stacy- thank you so much for the info. We have been a wreck thinking that this was the end and we only had a few days left with her. It feels a bit over-dramatic typing it out! She hasn’t done it since yesterday, but it is something to keep an eye one.

Rene- her eyes were waaay goopier than they ever have been, so we took her to our vet. I wanted her treated ASAP. I felt bad because I promised her no more vets! But as always she took it with grace and was a good patient. I had the vet check out the sound of her lungs and heart and he said they sound great and she isn’t in any respiratory distress. She got steak scraps tonight to make up for it.

Lucy now thinks going to the Vet is a good thing...as long as she gets steak each time!!!

People not on  this journey think conjunctivitis is a problem.  On this journey we celebrate that eye gunk is conjunctivitis and nothing worse!!😉  And it IS good news that Lucy's heart, lungs and breathing  all sounded GREAT!!

Tripawds with or without mets can feel a bit tired a day or two after overdosing it......and tripawds can overdo physical activity fairly easily....but they have fun doing it.

AMD that cough could be any number of things completely  unrelated to the mets. Sometimes a cough every now and then is "just a cough". And even IF it is met related, cough meds can help, as well as other options.  AND, fwiw, my Hapoy Hannah  jecer even developed a cough.   As Jerry said, "every dog is their own dog".

Lucy is doing just fine!  Keep up the steak...they are very therapeutic

I read about the bed/rug licking on a few blogs while I was researching what more I could do besides administering drugs after Griffin was diagnosed with GERD.  Here are a few posts that list a bunch of symptoms and suggested actions:
