I am sorry to hear about Sophie.  The combo protocol (carbo/dox) does seem to have a lot more side effects and the drugs build up in the system.  That is why many vets now do carboplatin alone.  I would give the Cerenia first (empty stomach is okay) and then give the carafate (the med that your vet gave in place of pepcid to coat the stomach) about 30 to 45 minutes later.  Some dogs get nausea from the carafate but the Cerenia  should prevent that.  Is she also on metronidazole for the diarrhea?

Poor, poor Sophie!

And Tana, I'm pointing my finger at you (lovingly)- DO NOT think you can't post!  Pam is kind enough to give us her expertise in a time of crises to help make us feel better!    Three days you've been crying and worried sick!?!  If anything, send me an email!

I agree with Holly's mom...freeze some tuna or salmon or chicken with the water.

Well - Sophie had a somewhat restless night - she managed to wake me up enough to have me blindly leaping out of bed and stumbling down the stairs to let her out - I don't remember how many times. I thought I had her securely "locked" in my bedroom - with the carpets all covered with various "blue pee pads" and blankets, mats, etc., so that if she had an accident, it would be relatively easy to clean up. Wrong. I guess I didn't close the door tight enough, or in my sleep-deprived state I failed to latch it securely one time - she left my bedroom at some point and managed to leave a few piles of diarrhea around the house, which I didn't find until I had to run out the door to an appointment this morning. That was very discouraging. She hasn't eaten much of anything - a few bits of kibble, a little bit of a piece of toast (no butter, or anything on it) - seriously - smaller than a dime. She did drink a bit of water.

This afternoon I was out in the yard doing some gardening - she came outside with me - and seemed quite content to lie in the sunshine and sleep soundly. There were no big piles of diarrhea to be picked up in the yard - she did all that in the house, I guess.

I have run out of carpet cleaner again - my new carpet cleaning machine has been going pretty much non-stop during waking hours. Everywhere there is carpet in my house - it looks like aliens have landed - little "crop-circles" of clean - overlapping each other - spread all over the rooms and down the hall.way-confused

We had to go out to my son's hockey game tonite - Sophie was alone for about 2 hours - when we got home - more diarrhea.

The oncologist - I spoke to her this afternoon - seems at a loss as to why Sophie is having so much diarrhea. She said we could take her back to the clinic and they would hook her back up to the IV and try to stabilize her again. OR, we could take her daily for 5 days for injectable anti-nausea meds. I don't know that she's nauseous so much - although she's not interested in eating - but anything she eats comes out before very long. At least this isn't black and tarry - it's just copious amounts of brown muscous filled poop.

My house will be condemned if this continues. I can't get the stains or the smell out. She finds the most remote places to go. When I had a little terrier - years ago - and he was very ill - he also had cancer, but we didn't know it at the time - he would wander off into the strangest places. I would find him in the closet in the spare bedroom, or under the bed in the guest room. He NEVER went to the bathroom in the house - never. Not even at the end. I just don't know how to deal with this. It seems never-ending. Sophie stinks, my house stinks, I smell poop even during those few precious moments when I am actually asleep.

Can I give her Imodium? Any other suggestions? There must be something. Obviously, confining her is a given. I will have to get a kennel - or baby gates - or something to confine her to an easily cleanable area.

I am exhausted and overwhelmed. I am too old to be getting up every few minutes to half an hour during the night  ..... wah, wah wah...... ugh (that's me feeling sorry for myself.....)

Oh boy, totally understandable that you're getting overwhelmed.  Gosh.  Cerenia did take up to 12 hours to work for Yoda when he had side effects from chemo, but it sounds like you're well past that mark, darn.  Yay for no blood, that's for sure, but geeeez.  Maybe not eating for a bit would be good?  Maybe a little fast would help? Well, I really don't have insight in this area, just sleepy and rattling off what ever comes into my head.  Sorry.  I hope this rough time passes soon!  More thoughts and prayers are coming Sophie's and your way!

Gosh, I wonder if she has some sort of infection? Pam mentioned metronidazole, which is an antibiotic, maybe you can ask the vet about it.  I'm so sorry you're going through such a rough time. It sounds like the frustration I felt during Sadie's 2 weeks post-amp.  I hope you can get some answers, and that Sophie is feeling better soon.

Hugs and sloppy Sadie kisses

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.

If you go with metronidazole, both Gerry's vets have sent Fortiflora (probiotic) home with us when they put him on metronidazole (several times lately - darn sensitive stomach).  Keeps the good bacteria in the GI to avoid negative effects the antibiotic can cause, as I understand it.  Never had that prescribed with previous dogs and vets, but it makes sense.  Just thought I'd mention it.  Maybe they only recommend it when they have to keep putting a dog on it, like they did with Gerry.  The stuff Gerry has gotten is easy to use, just sprinkle the powder over the dog's food and it seems like it tastes good.

Tana,

I'm so sorry to read about Sophie and all that you're going through.  I have to say that the best cure for diarrhea that I've used for my dogs is flagyl (metronidazole) as Gerry's mom and Pam have said.  I keep a supply on hand and whenever they have bouts of diarrhea it clears it right up within a couple of days.  So I would highly recommend that you talk to your vet about this.  Maybe you already have? Maybe they've already given it to her? (Sorry to come on strong about this but I swear by this stuff!)

It sounds like Sophie is having an extreme reaction to this chemo.  Mackenzie had pretty bad side effects too but didn't have diarrhea like this although she had severe nausea and loss of appetite.  Mackenzie was on 2 kinds of anti-nausea medication - cerenia and  another kind plus ginger.  It didn't seem to help all that much to tell you honestly.  But the flagyl, now that worked when she had diarrhea.

I can only imagine how difficult this is.  Someone once told me that the reason why dogs prefer carpeting if they have to go inside vs. the tile floor is because carpeting feels more like grass. I find that when my dogs have gone inside the house because they just couldn't hold it in,  it was always in the worst, most difficult places to clean up - like the carpet.  How stressful this must be for you.  cry

Hang in there - I'm sure once Sophie gets this through her system she'll be doing much better.  I don't blame you for wanting to stop the chemo treatsments.  i would too if this was the reaction (but don't beat yourself up about this - you just never know how a dog is going to react to these treatments.)

Thinking of you and Sophie. Hope that Sophie gets to feeling better very soon and you get your house back to smelling good again smile

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

Yes. We give Wyatt Immodium (1 pill 2x daily) whenever he gets explosive on us. It helps, and we can totally relate to those restless nights, there was a while when Wyatt had us getting up every two hours, for a couple weeks. Not chemo related, just the usual sensitive Shepherd stomach issues. (Wyatt is by no means sensitive, only his stomach.)

We do recommend getting a professional opinion though. And if this is related to the chemo, you can always stop the treatments. It is after all, about quality of life – for you both!

Tana, oh you have every right to go "waaaaaah!" I would to. One time Wyatt Ray exploded all over the inside of RV, two nights in a row, and that was bad enough. I'm so sorry.

First off, I wouldn't take "I don't know" for an answer from the oncologist. Diarrhea can be serious and is the body's sign that something is wrong with her gut. I would get another opinion immediately. According to one of my favorite holistic vets, Dr. Marty:

"The key to understanding and treating diarrhea is to realize that it's not really an illness. It's a symptom: the outward sign of any number of problems that interrup the large intestine's regular work of reabosorbing water from the wastes passing through it. Basically the intestines recognize that some very unwanted toxins are passing through them, and react by hurring them out as quickly as possible, while the wastes are still soft and liquid. ...it may be the result ofvarious internal organ malfunctions, especially of the kidney and liver; which can get overhwlmed by the toxins they're supposed to process. These will back up through the liver and then get tettisoned to the intestines. Toxicity, in short, is what leads to diarrhea, though that's not always a bad thing. With cancer or other degenerative diseases, the purging of toxicity as diarrhea may signal a healing crisis."

As for the mess...where are you? I'll come over and help clean, right now! Ok, maybe not. But here's some tips:

  • Leave open jars of vinegar all around the house. It will absorb the smells. It works wonders.
  • Sprinkle baking soda on the carpets. Again, it reabsorbes the smell.

Oh I don't know if this has been much help or not, but I would seriously get her in to see someone. This diarrhea thing needs to be treated for both of your sanity. Good luck.

Deep breath .... (outside).

A new day. The sun is shining. Sophie did NOT have diarrhea all night !! (BIG CHEERS !!!) AND she ate some white rice, shredded chicken with ground ginger on it at about 12:40 am last night (early this morning). She had me up twice in the night to go outside - not bad really. AND she let me sleep until about 11:30 am !! WAHOO ! Boy, do I feel better. I'm sure SHE feels better, too.

She ate some more this morning ! So far so good.

SO - I am going to the store to buy more carpet cleaner - to continue that effort - and will also be purchasing large industrial sized vats of vinegar and baking soda - thank you.... oh, and buying fresh ginger, and one of those cooked chickens from the grocery store...

If you're coming over to help clean - I think you need to head due west from Colorado .... when you get to Montana ... turn north ! Keep going ... you'll run into us eventually big-grin - we're the large white house with the blue trim - thanks for the offer !! Now THAT would be a site - wouldn't it - a whole gang of Tripawd owners lined up with carpet cleaners of various sizes and shapes ... traipsing into someone's house to clean up. superstar

Our oncologist emailed me and asked us to come and talk with her to try to figure out what is going on with all this diarrhea. We're heading off there right away.

Thank you so much for all your healing thoughts, prayers, laughs and good wishes.

Tana and Sophie
