What are signs of pain? I think that Marshall is in pain. He is ignoring us again and moving away from us if we sit near him. He was doing that when it was in his leg before we knew. He's panting but I know that can be from a bunch of reasons. He can't seem to get comfortable switching positions a lot, heavy loud breathing and I hear almost a slight whimper at times when he moves. It's not loud but def there. I gave him a tramadol last night. Should I get him morphine? Is it time? Should I give more tramadol. I'm panicking bc I don't want him to suffer.

I'm no vet by any means but from what you're describing (panting, uncomfortable, whimpers) it does sound like Marshall may be experiencing some pain.  Are you giving Marshall the highest dosage of Tramadol the vet recommended?  If not I think you could definitely increase it.  Have you attempted contacting Marshall's vet yet?  I would do that first thing this morning to get some direction on pain management medications.

I know from your earlier postings that a new pup has come into the family.  Perhaps Marshall just over exerted himself around the little guy?   I'll keep Marshall in my thoughts that things go well for him today.

I think panting is a sign of discomfort ... Shelby would pant and be restless when she was uncomfortable post-amp. She also didn't tolerate tramadol that well (made her manic) so we had to do a fine balance between pain management and crazy dog behavior.

I am with Sahana ... perhaps he over-exterted himself. I would call your vet this a.m. and find out!

Hugs,

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

I have a call into his Vet. He def hasn't over exerted himself he's been a loner more and more. He is having more trouble getting up and down again. I'm not sure what the highest dose is so I will find out. I hate using the tramadol bc if whacks him out even more but I can't have him in pain. She mentioned the other day to try gabapentin if we wanted but I didn't bc I know that takes a few weeks to start working we don't have a few weeks. She also mentioned possibly morphine. I don't want him to be drugged up like he is on tramadol and just sit in his crate panting heavy and staring at the wall. I feel like that isn't quality. I'll let you all know what the vet says. We need a miracle or I think this week is going to be the week we have to make some decisions. I didn't want it to even get this far. I wanted him to go out feeling good. I'm so pissed at myself bc now I feel like I'm scrambling to get his pain under control only to let him go anyway when I should have made this decision on a day he was having a good day.

Ditto Sahana.......

He definitely could just have pulled or strained something while playing with Buddy.

Pain shows up differently for each circumstance and each dog. Generally though, ears are pinned back, trembling, tense body posture, restless, crying, panting, shallow breathing. Of course, as you already know, so e of these "symptons" can be justt from the prednisone and are not "pain".

Is he engaged? Alert?

Yeah, a consistent dose or two of tramadol may help. Again, no vet, but morphine patches, from what I understand, take a longer time to have an affect, where Tramadol is quicker acting.

As Sahana said, perhaps a vet trip could help you assess what's going on.

You will always do what's right for Marshall. You always have, you always will.

Sending you and Marshall all the best and hoping for a turn around like he does so often!

He didn't even want to sit near George this morning and he never wants to separate from him. By the way George decided the puppies name is Doc bc he likes the meaning behind it. Docs registered name is Hayshaker Heeling for a broken heart "doc"

Try to stay calm and don't panic, I know it's so hard. Generally panting is a sign of pain. I know that when our Jerry's breathing was being impacted by his mets he was panting a lot. The vet prescribed him albuterol, an asthma-type inhaler med, to open up his airways. We didn't like how it reacted in him though, it made him very restless. It can't hurt to ask about this med.

Meanwhile this article may help:

Thanks I just read it and without a doubt he's in pain. I'll see what the vet says but I think it's time. I can't believe I let him get this bad to the point that he wants nothing to do with us bc he hurts. My poor marshall I'm so heartbroken

I was just trying to check on Gabapentin bc I don t think it takes thst long st all to kick in. I know you need a longer tapering off time when used for a couple of weeks, but I think it kicks in within the day....but check with vet! The gabapentin seems to have less side effects sometimes too on dogs who are sensitive to Tram.

I can only tell you that we all understand snd we all understand your devotion. Marshall is so unique because he very quickly alternates between haveing good days and less good dayds....even fluctuating from one hour to the next!!

I think there is a HUGE difference between severe suffering and have some pain and being uncomfortable. Marshall may be experiencing some of the latter and the pain meds will help!

This is hard. This is just seemingly unbearably hard. But NOW is the time you must not spend one minute second guessing ANYTHING!! NOW is the time to stay fully lresent with Marshall and conveying a confident and calm energy. Do not let your focus be on anything but surrounding Marshsll with love and celebration and a gazillion "good boys". I KNOW this is devasting you...but you MUST put those emotions on hold for now.

Marshall has shown you up to this pint it was NOT time. IF....IF....he is showing you it is time now, he is letting you know in a way so you can be certain. IF he is ready for transition now, he will let you know.

Marshall may have wanted to teach that pup a few things and now he may feel like his earthly journey is complete. He brought you a puppy at the right time and for the right reasons.

And as my vet says, it is very rare he ever hears anyone not second guess their timing...too late...too soon....itr an excruciating decision we must make and it's a cruel burden when our dogs can't tell us. But in so many cases, and this may be the case with Marshall or may not, sometimes they do get to "tell" us. Itr a little less daunting when they can let us know. And I PROMISE you, if you don"it" on a good day...you beat yourself up for doing it too soon. Just focus on what Marshall is telling you today or tomorrow. He clearly is in charge of helping you make a decision. Listen to him.

See if the vet suggests Gaba. and perhaps you will see an improvement. We are all here for you, but you know that. Hang in tightly, okay? We won't ket you go!

Give that sweet boy big smooches for us!

Love,

Sally

Jessica don't beat yourself up, you are doing so great at watching him and managing symptoms. There are lots of good days and bad days at this time, I'm hoping with all my heart that he has more good days ahead. Don't make any assumptions until you talk to your vet OK?

I'm in the chat room now if you want to talk.

Geez....I'm always "reply" behind!!

You didn't "let" Marshall get this far! This is the most brutal and cruel disease on the planet! It does what it wants when it wants! It does this p!!! We do EVERYTHING possible to fight it with everything we have. By many standards, Marshall jas been VICTORIOUS and made up his own rules and kicked butt for a long time!!

You know your Marshall so well. Not wanting to be with George...that may...or may not...be .arshall's way of letting you know he is ready. These kinds of "clues" are so personal and not someting you will find on "quality measuring lists".
Separating hiself from you maynhave less to do with pain and more to do with his way of starting his transition. Dogs have no fear of th transition. They know there souls continue on...they KNOW that. They know they are not their bodies. Marshall is probably very much at peace at te thought of stepping out of his earth clothes. We humans...yeah...not so much. But dogs know their energy is timeless and free and know when their mission is done and look forward tontheir rewards at the Bridge for a job well done.

Marshall is still here with you now lapping up the love and you are lapping up his lpve. Celebrate that.

Love and light

Sally

His breathing is about 104 breaths a minute it's that from the tramadol or is it pain or is it the tumor in his lung. Excuse the miss typings I'm doing talk to text because I'm holding the baby and it's too hard to type into my phone at the same time
