Jackie and Mac,

I am SO glad to hear that you are back home!  I've been thinking about you all.  Sorry to hear about the peeing issues.  I know when my Mac came home, the first day he just refused to move.  When my hubby finally convinced him to go out, he literally peed for about 5 minutes.  With all of the IV fluids he received, his kidneys were really going crazy.  With your Mac's kidney issues, I'm sure that's impacting him for sure.  The second and third day home (day 3 and 4) he really had to be convinced to do anything, and he's just 8, a young pup compared to your Mac.  It has gotten better and better after that.  We went for our first walk yesterday, just 5 houses out and back but it was something.  Want to hear a funny story?  Let McGwire outside yesterday and he showed up at my back door (up a flight of deck stairs mind you!) ready to come in.  I didn't let him in right away, and about 4 or 5 minutes later he disappeared.  A few minutes after that and I went looking for him.  Opened up the door to our screened-in porch and guess who I found sleeping contentedly on the couch?!  You guessed it!  He immediately hopped off and gave me this sheepish look that said "Oh come on Mom, I've only got 3 legs, and aren't I sweet?!"  Couldn't argue with him-he's right! Another cool thing, I finally saw him go downstairs.  Mind you he is a tall (36 inches at the top of his shoulders), front leg amputee, and the steps in our house are steep (but carpeted.)  What he does is sit down on the steps, and moves his front leg down a step, then scoot his butt down to the next step, and then repeat!  I thought it was so ingenious!  He's being my rock-star.  In just 2 short weeks, hopefully, you'll be telling stories like this about your Mac! Laughing

Sending you big hugs!

Aww I'm so glad he's getting around so well.  The thought of going up and down the steps so soon is impressive, as is the jumping up on the couch.  I'd love for Mac to be able to jump up on the bed again but I guess I'll have to see if he'll ever be able to do that.  The only flight of stairs we have is our basement one that up until a couple of months ago he would use all the time to go into our backyard where we have his aerial run.  I'm not sure if I'd trust him ever doing that again since they're kinda slick old wood and I'm haunted by the one day around mid-June (when he first started limping a bit) that he lost his balance at the top and slid/fell down the whole way kinda sprawled out like Bambi on the ice pond.  We have a tie-out in the front yard that we got when he couldn't go down to his aerial run anymore that I guess we could use for him to lay down outside and pee when he wanted, but it's been either too wet in the mornings or too hot in the afternoon for him to want to be out.  He hasn't peed anymore inside–one person who posted was right, I was pulling up on the towel too much because I wanted to really support him and that made him not want to pee.  I do it much looser and he goes eventually although I still have to force him to go outside in the first place.

He threw up twice last night and his appetite isn't returning very much.  Something he'll eat one day he'll absolutely refuse the rest of the time.  It's taking us about 45 minutes to get him to take his medication and supplements because he won't eat anything he normally likes.  I've tried peanut butter, pill pockets, all kinds of meat, canned food, bread, creamed cheese, regular cheese, banana, you name it.  Also he started tremoring yesterday and I called the specialist and she said that sometimes they do that from the pain or nausea and that as long as his breathing was ok it probably wasn't anything to worry about.  Thought I'd mention that in case it happens to others and they get freaked out like I did.

One day at a time.  I've only gotten a couple hours of sleep in the past week or so in order to watch him and help him get up to move so that's made my patience not what it would be normally but I'm not taking it out on him of course.  I try not to let him see the frustration.  I guess it also doesn't help that my father, who has been opposed to the amputation from day one and wanted him euthanized as soon as he was limping, has said daily for over a month that I'm a horrible selfish person for putting Mac through this and that I should be ashamed of myself.  Lovely, right?  I just hope Macadoodle feels better soon.  Ok he just threw up again.  I wonder if anything but the pepcid can help his stomach.

Lots of hugs to everybody on 2 and 3 legs alike.

That really sucks and it makes us so sad to hear you have to put up with that. But you know what, I think about 99 percent of us got negative feedback like that from some of our friends and family when we were faced with the amputation situation. My Mom just wanted to scream, "would you suggest putting down a person because they had bone cancer?" Grrrrr!!!! And that is exactly why we started this site, to prove we weren't crazy, and to show the world that dogs deserve a chance at a life free from pain.

Tell your Dad that unless he can something nice, to not say anything at all. It's hard to make a stand like that, but it really helps to not be around any negative feedback at times like this.

As far as the throwing up....keep an eye on that. It could be the meds making him nauseaus. And remember, dogs instinctively know that when they are ill, sometimes the best solution is to fast. Humans have a hard time with this concept, because when people or pets are sick, all they want to do is stuff them with food. But dogs know better, that if we leave our stomachs empty for a day or two, we can reserve the energy used to digest food on more important matters, like healing.

Stay pawsitive and remember we are here for you.

I think I'd tell your dad something along the line of "It's good to hear you think that Mac should have been put down right away.  That'll make my decision easier when you are old and can't take care of yourself anymore.  Won't need to waste money on a nursing home, just take you out back and BAM!"  (Just kidding, sort of!) Laughing

As far as his throwing up, just keep offering him healthy things and lots of water.  I would think he's going to need to keep his fluids up to help his kidneys.  Last week McGwire went through a bad case of diarrhea that lasted several days and it only stopped when I held off food for about 36 hours.  It felt like an eternity to me, but you know what-it worked!  His appetite never went down after the surgery except for the few days when it was just hard to get him to stand up to eat.  How's he doing now?

That's exactly what I think to myself about my dad every time he makes a remark lol.  Sometimes I wish I could say it just to put it in perspective.

Mac didn't throw up anymore after Friday but we held food off for 12 hours so I guess that's what helped.  The doctor said that the baby aspirin could have upset his stomach to that point.  I wish our Mac had the same luck with the appetite thing as yours because it's officially been a week and he will only eat something if we take a bite of it first or give it to him from the table.  He's paranoid because we've had to hide pills in his food and now he thinks every single thing is medicated.  I've had to turn on my acting skills and have food in hand and eat some in front of him like it was just meant for me and then say "Oh...do you want a bite?  I don't know, it's really yummy and I don't know if I can part with any of it.....oh, alright" *throw up hands*....and only then will he eat it.

He's been having really bad diarrhea for the whole week and he has refused to drink any fluids for 3 days.  Late Saturday night he had blood in his diarrhea so we drove 45 minutes to the Shenandoah Valley Emergency place in Verona.  The vet there did a blood test to see how dehydrated he was.  On the plus side, all of his kidney values are about normal.  On the minus side, his albumin hasn't budged from 1.6 and his potassium was really high which is something new.  The doctor wasn't sure what was causing the blood in the stool but he said that since it was bright red that it was most likely from the colon.  He gave him a liter of fluid under the skin to help hydrate him and 3 hours later we came home.

I'm worried about him.  His wound and activity recovery is good---he stood up without help for the first time yesterday!  I hope he will get his balance soon when he poops because since he is a rear leg amputee he can't squat like he used to and so diarrhea will fall all over his back leg and down his butt. Ugh  I've had to use baby wipes every time.  Him not wanting to eat much still and the poor bowels (they were soft for a couple weeks before surgery too) and especially not drinking anything is worrying me a lot.

He has an appointment monday morning with Dr. Jim so we'll see what we can do.  I hope he doesn't have colitis or something.

Jack has reached that point as well where once I get out the jar of peanut butter he runs into the other room because he knows there are going to be pills hiding in there.  I remember reading in some thread on here that putting butter on the pill works, so after about 10 minutes of trying to get him to eat the pills nicely and then giving up and trying to shove them down his throat, I had had enough and grabbed the butter.  10 seconds later, all 3 pills were in Jack's tummy.  They know when they are being tricked, those smart little dogs!

Try variety too! Cheese one day (cream cheese can help), peanut butter the next liverwurst another.
