Oh we get the "bill" too... I think Shelby enjoys spending my money! :-) And cookies ... lots of cookies at the Cancer Group! Shelby is definitely spoiled when she is there (and yet they have no candy for this mama to snack on while I wait?!?).

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Another earthquake in LA last night ... it wasn't that big (3.2) but it was enough to startle me - mainly because I was in the bathroom and my shower door started rattling. Shelby did great - either she is used to them or she didn't feel it (unlikely). But when it came time for bed ... my little protector!

You would think we would be used to this by now and yes, many little earthquakes are great since they are breaking up the pressure but still. Reminds me that I need an updated earthquake kit! But for those that don't know - standing in a door way/frame is proper protocol. Clearly dogs just instinctively know this!

SHELBYSTRONG an't scared of no stinkn' earthquake!! I love how she got in the doorway just in case though!!

I think we've got a good metaphor goingon...."little earth quakes are good..."...they break up the pressure of the big ones. So every time there's a little bump in the road with our furbabies, we have to remember it's their way of keeping the bigger "bumps" at bay.

Love the pic nd love the Shelby Girl!!

LOVE!

Definitely a great metaphor! I didn't even think of that when I wrote it but it does apply!  XO

Again with a seizure or stroke this a.m. but I am starting to pinpoint what happens before (which I guess is good). Shelby woke up in a great mood today (unlike her mama who has had a headache/neck ache all day and Advil doesn't help and I am tempted to take her Tramadol). Anyways. .. outside for our walk, skipping along. Came back, cookies and she was getting excited, running around, etc. Being "Shelby". So I go to offer her another cookie and she gets super excited and then I notice she's not at my side - she's leaning on the couch, again head to the side, just limp. This one took a bit longer (feels like an hour but it was maybe 30 -45 seconds). She comes out of it and eats the treat but then she just seems off. Puts herself in the bathroom and is shaking like a leaf. I didn't call the vet. They are totally sick of me calling all the time. I figured I would watch her today and she has been fine. Was in the bathroom for a while but if I snuggled or hugged on her, she was fine so I think she thinks I was mad (she mistook my concern for anger,  I guess).

I took her outside for some fresh air and she was happy to be outside. I think perhaps, as a senior dog, as Sally said, this is possible... We put her back on her iron pills Friday but I forgot to give them to her last night since I was out at work all day and spaced when I got her her dinner.

She is totally fine now and snoozing on my feet. It just stresses me out! I pray we have a peaceful evening!!!

You sound like you are handling these great Alison.  Kudos to your mom power.  Just keep on loving on that sweet baby.

Adelaide is a young tripawd Husky, from an injury.  Her amp was on 10/1/12.  She has 4 sisters, Aissa (a senior border collie/chow), Maggie May (a puppy Great Pyrenees), Mathilde and Morrigan and 1 baby brother, Bagheera.  We are all watched over by our angel Brendol, who was dx with OSA 1/30/13, amp on 2/6/13, and left us on 8/20/13.

Ohhhh Shelby you make my heart go pitter patter I love that pic.

I agree, you're really handling this great. Your thorough observations will help pinpoint the issue if it happens again, which I hope it doesn't, but yeah like Sally said, maybe it's just an old dog think? Kinda like the way old people fall asleep in their chairs? I hope it's that simple.

Paws crossed for an easy week ahead.

Shelby is just so adorable! She looks no worse for the wear in her picture. Very proactive of you to have figured out what has happened before them. She has a great Mommy!

Quit melting myheart with those pictures SHELBYSTRONG!!! How is it possible that you keep gettng cuter??

Sorry shehad another little episode. I think you've done an excellent job of f pnpointing the circumstances surroundng it. She loves her life...gets a little over-excited about it and just has a "senior moment". And doesn't she have a little heart urmur? Couldn't remember id she does or not. But that could give her a little "glitch" every now and then.

Shelby is such an amazng girl. I'm really glad you've allowed us to be part of your extended family. What a ride!! We love you both!

Maybe when she has another "senior moment", yo should go in "her" bathroom and snuggle on her purple bath mat! Maybe she's onto something!

Love!

Hi Alison

Just catching up on this thread....you are a wonderful advocate for the lovely Shelby.

I think it is great that you now have an idea about the antecedent to these "episodes".

I think lots of snuggles and, as Sally suggested, even if it is in the bathroom on the purple bath mat is the answer.

Many hugs

Linda and Tucker

Aww, Shelby! You are too cute!! I am so sorry, I am just catching up with your thread. I agree with everyone, you really are handling these great. Jake did this a couple times, and they are really scary the first few times you see it. Our vet called them "syncope episodes", which is basically fainting. Jake also had anemia (he wasn't on iron pills, he had other issues). I gave him syringes of black strap molasses and it seemed to help. I read that these episodes are common in dogs with anemia due to low oxygen levels in the blood. They faint when they have an episode of not getting enough oxygen to the brain. I think once her anemia gets under control, she won't have these anymore :)

Awe! Thank you all for your kind words and support! Shelby definitely likes to keep me on my toes. She spent more time than I personally like in the bathroom yesterday but I think she goes in there to pout now when she doesn't get her way (i.e., more food, her bones, etc).

But I think it IS more like 'fainting' - she doesn't 'shake' or have her legs go rigid really - she more so just kind of walks 'drunk', stumbles and leans against something (my couch). She is anemic as we know from her last blood work so we're trying to get that under control w/the iron supplements but that makes a lot of sense that she will just 'pass out'. Sounds like what Jake was experiencing.

Unfortunately we had a significant earthquake this a.m. (4.7) and it shook the apt pretty good - I could actually see things shaking (nothing fell off the walls and we're both fine) but it scared Shelby for sure. She was shaking for a good 20 min while I tried to comfort her before I had to rush to shower to get to work. She was fine when I left (or I wouldn't have left her there). That was the biggest quake I have ever felt and honestly, I am pretty much over them at this point! And the funny thing is - Shelby was sitting calmly - staring hard at me with her ears back right before it happened - I figured it was because she knew I was about to get in the shower and thus, get ready for work. Not so much. 🙂
