Oh wow I'm just back at my desk for the first time today and see that Jake is back getting the care he needs right now. I'm sorry that was so tough to deal with, you must have been so worried! But yes, if it's easiest and safest for him to be at the vets then good job getting him there. Recovery will be so much easier for all of you. Jake is so lucky he came across the best humans for him! You are all going to have a great summer, I just know it!

Keep us posted and let us know how he's handling the extended care at the vet clinic OK? We are sending lots of love and pawsitivity to your sweet special pup!

All I pray for is that I get him back safe and sound.  We want to give him the best life he can possibly have.  In our hearts we did what we think is right for Jake, to give him a chance at a good life as a tripawd.  Because of Tripawds I've come to believe that Jake will be happy.  I just feel bad that this is so tough on him.

Yes he can definitely get his mojo back! It's tough when things don't go as easily as one had hoped but Jake has a great team on his side and he WILL get there.

I'm in the Tripawds Chat right now if you want to talk OK?

(((hugs)))

So Jake was in bad pain and he just was not going to let you give him pain meds?  I didn't  quite grasp that he's st the Vet so they can give him pain meds??

Having pain managed is important, that's  for sure.

How long is he there?  Maybe they can give you some tips on pilling him that work for them... maybe?

Jake is being boarded at the veterinarians where they can give him pain meds/anti-inflammatory and anti-biotics by IV.   He will not eat anything and even they can't give oral meds w/ any tricks in the book.  He was never in pain at home but I knew that wouldn't last because the fentanyl patch and nerve block last so long.  So when I couldn't get anything into him he went back to the vets before he got in pain.

Now I'm hoping I didn't do the wrong thing putting him through this.  All my research and talking to people just kept pointing to the surgery as the best option for Jake.  Have you ever known a dog that just couldn't handle this procedure?  I'm hoping I made the right decision.  We didn't want to lose Jake yet.  But I also wanted to do the best thing by Jake.  Such a difficult time.

I asked the vet if I could come by today to see them "pill" him to learn, or to take him for a walk.  They said they gave up on the pills and are just using the IV now....

I realize I'm falling into the fear/negativity trap and I choose now to turn my attitude around to full positivity!!

I am grateful that Jake is where he needs to be, getting the care he needs.

I'm grateful that we adopted Jake are both willing and able to give him love and a long life.

I'm grateful for all of you, also!!

I have to trust that he is on the road to recovery and getting stronger every day.  I in no way doubt out decision, this was the only decision that we could have made.  I trust that Jake will be happpy!!

I won't be posting until he is home and getting better....Meanwhile send prayers his way smiley2

Hi Connie - I'm so sorry that you and Jake are going through this difficult patch, but I know it will get better!  It is so clear from your posts how much you love Jake and that everything you do stems from wanting what is best for him.  And right now, that means having him at the vet for IV meds and fluids to keep him safe and comfortable.  You are a pro at handing difficult situations based on your experience getting Jake to this point even before the surgery.  Please keep your positive mindset and know that all of us here are rooting for you and Jake.  Both of you are in my prayers and I'm sending lots of hugs, too! ~ Stacy

Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com

WOW!!   That Jake is one strong willed doggy!!   The good news is, that's a good trait to have during recovery!!

As far as Jake "handling the procedure", there's no evidence he isn't,  eight?  The problem is keeping his pain managed.  I have to say, Jake is the first dog I've heard of who had to be at the Vet 24/7 to get pain meds in him.  Quite a character!-

How does the Bet say he's going othrerwse??  Eatng, drinking, pooping?  How's his mobility?  Okay...just remembered  he's not eating.

I k ow generally  it's suggested not to go visit asit gets the dog too upset.  I do think this is an exception though.   I do think it would do you voth a world of good to take a short walk together, or just ait oitside together for a few minites in the sundhine.  AND, of you took him a warm cheeseburger I bet he would eat iit!!!

And a other question for the Vet, are they giving  him an appetite  stimulant??

And, another thought, there actually  some dogs who get off pain meds sooner than others.  It may ve woeth a try to see of he could be off pain meds at home OR...BETTER YET...   Just wondering if Jake could come home with s Fentanyl  patch.  Yes, it may make him a vit whaxky and unsteady, but it would manage his pain for days at a time and have him home!!

Hang in there!  And please give us more feedback when you have a second.

Hugs

Hi Everyone.  Jake is home, eating and I see his spark returning!   The best part of today was when a friend came over and my chihuahua started barking.  Then Jake started barking, too, and sprang up to see Karl.  Then we all went outside.  Jake was real happy and sat right next to Karl with a big smile on his face.  We are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel!

After the surgery Jake wouldn't eat and we couldn't get the important meds in so he stayed at the animal hospital for 5 days so he could get IV fluids.  On Monday the doctor said he still wasn't eating but that "he'll eat at home".  He was right and Jake is eating so now I can slip some of the pain meds into him without him realizing it. Not as many as has been suggested but he seems ok.

Every day Jake is going to get stronger.  I'm setting my sights on the 4th of July as the beginning of his new life being fully healed.  I'm giving him a long recovery period just in case.  I am so happy that he seems better...Thanks everyone for all of your support and tips!  Today I did the "hide the pill in the melted cheese" trick and it worked!!smiley4

PS:  I am sleeping in a cot right next to him for now with a sleeping bag and my chihuahua snuggles right next to me too.  That way Jake doesn't feel alone smiley9

Oh, Connie - what great news!  I've been waiting to hear how Jake was doing and this is such a fantastic update!  Jake must be so happy to be back home with you and his family again.  It's great that he is eating and getting at least some of the pain meds that he needs.  The jumping up and barking was one of the first signs Griffin showed of getting his sparkle back, too!  Please try to post photos or videos - I would love to see more of the amazing Jake! sp_hearticon2sp_hearticon2sp_hearticon2 Stacy

Whhhheeee! What a fantastic update on Jake, I'm so happy to read this. Karen's cheezy pill trick is so pawesome!

I love the idea of 7/4 as Jake's independence day, that's a realistic and wonderful goal smiley_clap
