Well after staying up until 2am last night and barely getting any sleep I thought that I had made a decision to consult another vet. However when I discussed this with my husband he said absolutely not! He said he has been killing himself just to pay for the amp surgery and now we are accruing a bill daily for the bandaging and the vets housecalls. He says that he will not allow me to consult another vet because of the cost that will probably be involved. He said we will just have to ride it out. So I guess I will just have to pray harder for God to get me through this and to please heal Valentina. Today the drainage is still a constant steady flow and it is a kind if thick dark reddish burgundy color. It does not smell bad anymore. She seems to feel ok. She did eat her breakfast today and her gums are nice and pink. I don't know what else to do but wait and pray. To afford the surgery we had to skip buying groceries the week of the surgery and my husband said that we will also have to cut $100 off of our grocery bill until the bill is paid off. My husband says there is no more money to do anything else.

As far as a measurement of the amount of fluid it definitely is not measured in teaspoons or tablespoons. When my vet was here he described the amount of drainage that gushed out when he took off the bandage as a cup or more and I agree. And it is still like that today. That was a few days ago. Yesterday when I was freaking out because I thought it was just blood coming out the vet came over and said I had described it far worse on the phone that it actually is. He said that what is coming out is still just serum. Today it looks much thicker than it was before. Is that because it is trying to clot? I have no idea. I am still very worried but I can't do anything else because my husband won't let me. At least she seems to be feeling ok. She is still kind of tired but she seems alert and interested in whats going on around her. If she looked terribly ill I would be calling the vet again.

Angel & Valentina, I feel so badly for you guys, I'm so sorry this is happening. I hope you don't mind my moving your post to this Discussion Forum but I wanted to make it easier for people to find it later, because I can promise you someday there will be another person who will need to know they are not alone in this situation.

I can understand why your husband is upset, but why not get the information about what it would cost for a second opinion and then talk to him? No point in jumping to conclusions without knowing what it will cost.

Also, have you seen our Financial Resources Help downloadable document? Please check this out, someone may be able to work with you. Where exactly are you located? Maybe we know someone in your area who can help.

I will say, this is not a normal situation, seromas usually don't require so much draining for so long. She may have something else going on, that would not be unusual and it can often be treated.

As for medications, our Tripawds nutrition blog has links to all sorts of pet pharmacies with good rates. Shop around.

Faith is also powerful medicine, so hang onto that too. You CAN get through this.

In the meantime, even a phone call or two to another vet might be able to persuade your husband to try someone else. If anything, you can possibly persuade him by pointing out that yes, you have spent a lot of money on her, but if you don't get this situation under control, then all of that money and his hard work will have been for nothing.

We are thinking of you, please keep us posted.

First of all, I'm so sorry that you are having to go through all of this.  We will keep your family in our prayers.  I'm with Jerry on this one.  Check out the financial resources help that's posted, because I really think you need to get a second opinion, and some vets will work with you on a payment plan.  The surgeon who did Chili Dawg's amputation for us did that.  Stay strong!

Diagnosed with OSA: 5/2/2011 Ampuversary: 5/11/2011 OSA returned in hip: 8/26/2011
Chili Dawg crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 8/30/2011 & is now pain free. He was my heart dog, and I miss him every day.

Angel and Valentina,  I'm so sorry to hear all you're going thru.  If it were me, I would be incredibly worried too.

I saw in your other thread that you're changing that bandages yourself now.  That's great!  I've ended up learning to do so many things that I never expected to learn because of my dog. 🙂

I understand the financial issue as well.  I agree with Jerry's suggestion that it can't hurt to at least call a couple of other vets that may be recommended by friends and see what it will cost to see them.  Since it sounds like your vet is still coming to do some of the bandage changes, you might also ask if one of them would be willing to come do the next bandage change.  That way, you will not be paying any more than you are currently expecting to have your current vet do the next change, but you could have a second set of eyes look over the situation.

You don't need to pray harder, he hears you.  Maybe you just need to tell him you're tired and heartbroken, you don't know what to do and you're turning it all over to him.  Of course, then you have to do it.

I feel like I am in the middle of a horrible nightmare!!!!!!!!! This morning when Valentina got up to go out her bandage burst open again and a terrible flood of bloody fluid came gushing out everywhere. It looked so much like blood to me. It was very red and there was alot!!!! My husband won't let me get a second opinion on this so I had no choice but to call my regular vet. He told me that this has gone on longer than he'd like.DUH!!!!!!!!! Then he said I needed to bring her in to have it irrigated. It's 101 degrees outside with a heat index of 115 and Valentina could barely make it outside to pee. She laid down in the grass. I don't see how irrigating this will do any good. How is that going to stop this so called drainage/bleeding? Also my husband is at work and I have no one to help me transport her anyway. The told me to bring her in in the morning and they would fit her in. I hope we can make it until then. This is one of the most horrible things that I have ever had to go through. Valentina still seems ok. Other than her laying in the grass when I took her out she is ok. She ate her breakfast and seemed alert.

My dog had several weeks of drainage after surgery as well, but not quite as much fluid as what you are describing.  Our vet had me irrigate the wound 2-3 times a day for several weeks with a solution that he prescribed.  He said that the flush would help to clean the wound and clear out the infection.  It took several weeks, but the fluid eventually became less cloudy and there was less of it.  They also did a culture for infection and put my dog on antibiotics for a couple of weeks.

I just got back from rushing Valentina to the vet. My brother in law wasn't answering his phone because he had to take my sister to the ER. She is ok. He came over to help me change Valentina's bandage and to see if he thought that there was something wrong. He is an EMT and said that the fluid coming out was indeed pure blood. Her gums had become pale and so we rushed her to the vet. I wasn't happy with what the vet said. He said he was going to irrigate it and put a compression bandage back on. I asked him if he would need to go in and tie up something that was causing the bleeding and he said that they usually don't like to go back in. Well I don't see what irrigating it can do. It was bleeding so much! Like 2 cups worth in about 10min!!! we had to wrap her with loads of bandaging to get her to the vet without it leaking  and it leaked through the bandage in a couple of minutes. He said she has to stay overnight. I told him to call me with an update before he leaves for the day. He leaves at 5 I think. So now I just have to sit here and worry. I did sign a paper for them to do what they have to do to fix it. My husband doesn't know that yet. He is at work. I guess he will just have to be mad at me. Please pray that my Valentina is going to be ok. I never would have done this if I had known that this would happen. But I guess there is no way to know that things like this will happen. I am just so mad at the vets for acting like this was no big deal all this time. She had this going on when they first released her and they didn't even tell me. They should have prepared me that there was going to be some drainage and that it would probably take a while to resolve. But they didn't say a thing except that they would come to my house on Tuesday to change the bandage. It was Saturday!! That would be three days!! After I got home and discovered that it was draining so much I called them and said I think that it needs to be changed before Tuesday. And they said they would do it on Monday. It was completely saturated by then and leaking all over the place. At that point I had not yet learned to change the bandage myself. After a while I realized that it needed to be changed daily and I learned to do it myself. I can't believe this is happening. I thought by now I would be feeling better about my decision and she would be happily hopping around. I am seriously wondering why I did this and my husband is very angry with me for choosing to do so.cry

FYI, we have chatted with Angel today. The vet hadn't yet seen Valentina as of 4:45 pm. because there were "other emergencies."  There is no overnight care at this clinic. twisted Angel is returning to the vet's and staying there until they do something about the bleeding.

It definitely sounds like a re-suture is in order!  I would also ask for antibiotics because these are very prone to infection.

I'm so so so sorry you have to be going through this and dealing with a vet who sounds like a heartless jerk. Sending MASSIVE good thoughts that your Valentina will get through this and eventually be the happy, hoppy girl we all know she should be.

Big hugs and virtual, healing Abby kisses,

Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman.
