My little girl, an about 3 yr. old pit mix named Maya, is currently undergoing the amputation surgery. She is very head strong and resilient, so I know she will do well with recovery. It's me going through an emotional roller coaster. Maya was hit by a car last Friday evening (it didn't stop) and the hit broke her femur in her right hind leg. Thankfully, everything else is still in tact without damage. The recommendation was to amputate because it was a bad break and the surgery to consider repairing the leg was pricey and extensive, too many "ifs" so to speak. The surgeon recommended amputation because it was highly likely I would be considering amputation a few years after the extensive fix, IF it worked, anyway.

This will be my first tripawd. ANY advice would be helpful.

Beth and Maya, welcome. Please consider registering as a member so your future posts won't need to wait for approval.

I'm so sorry that you had to join us! But thank dog Maya survived the accident and is doing pretty well considering. Sometimes when a dog loses a leg to a speeding car, they may have a little more difficulty during recovery. It's just because their body took such a beating and is healing in many places, not just the amputation site. Hopefully she won't have any extra challenges but if she does don't panic. Like you said, she is headstrong and a Pittie, and really that breed does very well during recovery, we see it all the time.

It's hard to make a decision like this but better to have your sweet girl around with three legs than not around at all! And she can go on to live a terrific life on three! Here's some information to check out while you wait for her to come home:

the Tripawds e-books , especially Loving Life On Three Legs

our What to Expect articles

and the Tripawds Recovery Shopping List

The best thing you can do right now is to keep calm, and know that recovery is only temporary. Make sure she has good pain management , as that will make recovery so much easier! And check all your floors for lots of traction , you want to make sure she won't be ice skating around your house.

Stay tuned for feedback from others and keep us posted on how things are going! We are cheering for Team Maya!
