Hi TY

This is Bud and he is a MRSA survivor. He acquired MRSA in the hospital, the MRSA attatched to wires around his femur and then infected the bone causing the need for his amputation. He was a very sick dog when he came home and we were not sure that he would survive. It was a long costly battle. There were only 4 drugs that were resistant to the MRSA . The MRSA mutated and 2 of the drugs stopped working. We only had 1 intravenous drug left as an option when Bud finally kicked the MRSA . MRSA can cause other health issues such as pneumonia or organ failure.

I do not want to scare you but I want you to know how serious and deadly MRSA can be so that you can advocate for your pal.

The foremost thing you should do is educate yourself by reading everything you can on the Bella Moss MRSA foundation website. There are also good tips on what to do to protect yourself and family, MRSA can be transmitted between people and animals.I have contact with Jill personally and she put me in touch with a vet to answer questions about Bud's diagnosis and protocal. If you need help, I can contact her. If you have questions, contact me!

With sincere healing thoughts,

Bud's mama

thank you! I have not had a lot of time to read it yet, but will this weekend. We were at vet this morning early for bloodwork. You have to do tests every 3 days while on Amikacin.  his were fine so we can continue. Only problem was, he is running a fever again.madmadmad I am not mad at him , just this whole stupid illness. My husband is getting a bit miffed also about both the time I am spending caring for my dog and my internet time spent researching. Not to mention the vet bills we have accrued. So I try to get on computer when he is not home so he does not get too upset with me. He has emotionally checked out of this whole thing. It is kind of like Ty has already passed for him. So I then accidently told the vet that Ty was an Baytril. she gave me more and said to keep him on it, as she is afraid he is developing pneumonia. UGGGGGG! I came home and then remembered that he is NOT on Baytril, but instead, Clavomox. I guess I will start the Baytril, as obviously the Clavamox is not the key. I would have thought the Amikacin would kill any bacteria. He has terrible diarrhea. We have already 1/2 his Prednisone dose last week. Probiotics, digestive enzymes, Pepcid and Carafate. Not sure what else to do I am cooking up some chicken and rice right now. There was a drop of blood at the end of his poop. Then the poor boy stepped in it. Washing all the blankets. I finally got his feet clean. (I think). I am not even going to call vet about the poop thing. They will just find some reason to hospitalize him again. I want him with me. His lungs sound clear, vet said this AM. She just thought his cough sounded "a bit wet". I am not convinced it is not a reflux thing. That would not explain the fever though. I have accepted that there will be no more chemo. His body will never be strong enough to handle it. it is what it is. I will hug him, love him and keep him comfortable for as long as I can. Any suggestios in addition to what  I am doing? Just feeling tired, sad and alone today. I would like good news two times in a row for once.

Ohhh Ty, please stay strong and healthy OK?

I wish I could offer you some kind of direction with the current situation bu twhat I can offer is this; please don't beat yourself up, you are doing the very best you can and it is AMAZING. And you have to take things day by day or you will make yourself crazy.

As for the diarrhea have you tried green clay? It works wonders even for the worst chemotherapy GI reactions.

You are not alone, we are here to help. Oh, this Forum discussion kinda reminds me about what you are your husband are going through (it's not unusual), maybe it will help:

Remember when I said Bud was very sick, he also had a fever and upper respitory infection. He would not eat or even rise to get a drink. I brought his water dish to him so he would not get dehydrated.

We were there too and I still have MY DOG!

The clavamox should help the resp infection. If you made a mistake call them, they should have been able to read what meds he is on. You are paying a fee and they better be able to take phone calls and help you when you need it!

Also when the culture was grown, they test to see what drugs the MRSA is sensitive too. It is NOT a guessing game, they should have a list!!! MRSA is a super bug, the bacteria will not be able to be easily killed and it can mutate and become resistent. Bud was on antibiotics for 11 weeks and we exhausted 3 out of the 4 drugs.

This is where you decide whether or not to dig your heels in (I'm from WY and that is cowboy talk) This is going to be a bumpy and long ride! Are you going to battle....you and Ty have come this far???

Cry, I did! Be frustrated, I was! Be mad, I was dammit! Was it expensive and draining ....yep!  Did I feel alone....you bet ya, I did't know anyone who had faced this...never mind anyone who won!!!

Remember that you have support systems, here and Bella Moss will help you! You CAN do this!! Your husband is probably frustrated too, he is just dealing with it in another way.

Stay strong and I'll be praying for you, I really do know how hard this.......

Of course you feel alne right now.....althoughnyou have your husband "there", he has checked out, and that's understandable how he's justified it in his mind. He loves Ty and doesn't want ro see him suffer a ymore than you do. I'm sure he's trying to "protect his feelings" by trying to stay "distant"

And that's where TY is sooooo grateful YOU are his #1 human!! You are sooooo tuned into him!! So connected. Ueah, when hubby's around, I would just try and stay off the computer and try snd give TY as muchof his "caregiving" when he's not around. I kow that would be hard due to the schedulingof meds, etc.
Does hubby interact with Ty...loving on him, telling him what a good boy he is to make his tail wag, maybe the one who lets him out to pee, etc?

DO check with your vet about switching from Clavamox straight to BaytrilllI'm sure there's no wash-out period....probavly just a little more soft poop. The bit of red blood in his poop could just be because of all the digestive - intestinal psets. I fyou see it again, maybe just take that "sample" in to the vet. I agree with you...he does NOT need hospitals right now!!

CONGRATULATIONS ON GOOD BLOOD WORK!! That IS a HUGE VICTORY!!

He could have developed pneumonia while in the hospital with all the throat tubes in and out and so much anesthesia, etc. Heck, he developed all of his other problems there, so why not this o e too!!! I think the a tibiodic and rest should clear that up at homd.

You are the most incredible advocate for Ty! Just incredible! Soooooo strong!! I know it feels like you are so alone right now, but trymand hang onto us really tightly....-so hard it turns your knuckles white!!! We're holding onto you just as tightly, okay? We surround you with love snd encouragement everyday. We all hold our collective breath waiting formyour updates. WE ARE HERE!!

You and TY jave come sooooooo far!!! Clearly, Ty has NO intention of giving up! He has had numerouse opportunities to 'let go"...to give up...and he has not!!! You have a real chance now for the first time in a very long time to pull him through this. It won't be easy...but you aren't used to "easy"!! You can handles this!!

How is Ty's overall attitude? I guess not eating much with all those meds? Tail wsgs? Engaged? Able to get up on his own? Still hiding your shoes?

LOVE AND HUGS!

Sally and Happy Hannah
