Hi Diane - just want to send you big, big hugs across the miles.  You have such a great spirit, and such a great sense of humor - it'll help you through, I'm sure!  Allowances from the vet and making the vet an authorized user for your credit cards - I needed those laughs this morning!  I'm not even going to mention those to my husband, who I am sure thinks I am nuts for what I do for Holly and now the new puppy, too! (5:15am wakeup call - who needs sleep?)

{{{{}}}}
Hugs,

Holly and Holly's mom

Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

Hey how about a frequent buyers club at the vet's? Maybe a "Membership Rewards" kinda club? Hmmm..

Shanna, you can share the Tramadol with Trouble! It's a human drug, a painkiller that's somewhere between Tylenol and Vicodin. So the next time you pay a vet bill and it starts to give you a headache, just pop one of those!

Diane, we hope things are better today. Just getting all the latest here, we were offline all day. I do think dogs can get kidney stones, at least i think I"ve heard that before. Hopefull that's "all" it was and no more pink pee!

Glad Ruthie is on the mend, whew!

Hugs coming your way. Remember to breathe sister, breathe. ...

This is too coincidental.  I've been reading about Tramadol over the weekend and saw that it is used for fibromyalga so Bob took 50 mg yesterday - no results.  So this morning he took 100 mg - no results.

He also reports 'No pink elephants'.  There's a giggle for everyone today!

I took Magic's tramadol for my various things....absolutely no effect....of any kind...

Serious post:

I just emailed Rene...Magic just coughed up some blood...more than that little show a couple of weeks ago (or a week?  losing track of time)...no pee on sheet last nite, jammed down pills this morning...I wish I could think I scraped his throat or something...I guess I just watch it unless it gets worse??

In case I didn't make a big enuf deal...there was no damp spot this morning...a slight dampness when I got him up in the middle of the night I think...but not much.  He is taking the two ABs to lick whatever is going on urinary wise...but this blood is scary scary scary....

Diane, so standing beside you.  Wish I was closer so all the good energy I send wouldn't be 'virtual'.

The blood is a scary symptom, I'd be beside myself, as I am sure you are.  Sounds like the UTI is coming under control - that will make him feel better.  From what I remember reading, what you are describing is not uncommon for lung mets.

Lots and lots of good thoughts and hugs for the two of you!

oh thank you thank you...I am sure it is because I remember reading a bunch of posts about it from links sent me a while back...It is just that I was in the other room...and expected a certain amt of choking after his pills and lots of time has gone by and I walk back to the bedroom to take a shower and crap there is the blood all over the sheet that I wasn't going to have to pick up cuz there was no PEE on it!!  brother....

It is a very scary thing when it happens.  IT has made me consider tho that I need to contact the owner of the vet practice and see if when the time comes, will they come to the house....I'm not sure I can take him in...I just don't think I can.  So rather than wait till it IS time and I'm hysterical, I'd better pad the way now....great...something to start the day off with

Ok, just remember if he starts pacing around, circling on the bed and whining, it's probably just the meds 😉

You're on the right track there. As hard as it is to talk about, if you have the "luxury" (weird term, eh) of having the vet come over, you should plan for it. It's so much easier than making a frantic phone call. You can ask what to expect before, during and after, which can help put your mind at ease a little.

Diane, I'm so sorry about the blood, that would terrify us, even if we did know what was causing it. {{{hugs}}}

oh I have made that trip so many many times....with Echo we had just gone in to get nails clipped and he never came home.  I have walked through that door with my animals and with other people's animals who couldn't do it period or couldn't do it alone...I have been there for so much death.

The vet at that practice that has been Magic's vet until the cancer...then we needed a diff. vet because of the appointment situation when I needed help with him.  I met her when she came to the house to send Wolf to the Bridge.  We were outside under the windchimes and it was about 15 years ago or more....she still remembers how peaceful it was with the chimes and him in mylap and Bob at the door bawling his eyes out...

I just don't think in this case I can actually walk him in there...So I have called and left a message and we'll see what he says.  I don't do the burial or ashes (I know most of you do) so I would like them to take away his shell ... crap, why am I even thinking about this.  He is coughing a little more today and we are on our way out...Hopefully a play date with Ruthie tomorrow.

Oh Diane.  You sound scared and that is very upsetting over here.

How does he feel?  You haven't mentioned how he feels?  I know you are trying to be prepared which is good, but I hope you are not focused on the end time if he still feels good.  When death is fresh, like with OJ, it can creep into your thoughts more than it should.  I don't need to tell you this.  You know better than any of us.

I just wished, like Shanna said, we were closer.  We'd be there in a heart beat.

Lots of hugs coming your way.

P.S.  I'm stuffing Comet. I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I didn't have her around to worry about! wink

Regarding tramadol...

Keep mindful if you take an antidepressent, there is a slight possibility of serontonin syndrome if you combine the two.  To be on the safe side, don't take it with a antidepressent.

..."Although most often feared when patients are prescribed multiple antidepressants, the serotonin syndrome is also associated with tramadol when used concomitantly with a single antidepressant."..."The serotonin syndrome is a rare, but potentially fatal complication that most commonly occurs with the coadministration of 2 or more drugs that affect the serotonin system."

http://www.cpjo.....X-142.2.71

The scarier part, most doctors don't know this!   I have a prozac RX for Comet from her vet and was also given tramadol (after Rugby died and her having the neck infection).  My vet said it okay to give together.  I researched and found out it wasn't!   I sat up all night watching Comet after giving it to her which was just shortly before researching it.  She was fine but I have never given her a prozac since.

I didn't know you could GIVE dogs prozac...wow....you know it is like regular people doctors...they don't always know what goes with what and if they don't pay attention...I appreciate that my doc has always hauled out the PDR to check things out and has no qualms doing it in front of me.  Until tomorrow (june 1st), I have been using a pharmacy that my parents used when i was a kid (new owner now...old one is about 150) and it was nice knowing it was a small place and they DELIVER...now I have to go to CVS or my ins. won't pay...isn't it funny that the drug plan I have is owned by the same people as CVS.....

going to check out that link...just in case...

i am trying not to laugh at the idea of a stuffed Comet...hey why not....I had a momentary thought of cloning Magic...then figured it would clone the cancer too!!

I don't think he is as energetic today..we went out and he did one park then we went to the big one where there were some new dogs and he did a little running then plopped down in a big watery spot on the lawn!  At least there wasn't any mud in it and that is what I'm attributing the wet spot on the sheet to!!  finally a better explanation.  But we came home and I stuffed some pills down him.  Oh, yesterday I went to a small pet store near me and the kid (who looks 14 but has to be older) is big on raw foods and dehydrated stuff with no fillers...I bought a bunch of stuff (SHUT UP YOU GUYS) and one can fed the garbage disposal...haven't tried feeding the reconstituted stuff...it is in the fridge reconstituting...but this stuff called "A Taste of Raw" $4.99 a bag...he gave it to me...Magic actually liked...I defrosted some medallions in the fridge then fed cold (that's what he said...do NOT nuke) and Magic actually ate some...he even ate some after I had stuffed pills down him!!  Made by Nature's Variety...never heard of it..but hey all the ingredients are things I can pronounce and EAT!!  ALL FOOD...or so it says.

He is coughy/chokey a little more today but he tends to do that after I have had my whole hand down his throat stuffing pills...so we'll see...that bloody show is very disturbing and scary...

well, now I've come here to Tripawds and in the last ten minutes I have sobbed and laughed...go figure...I love it here and hate the reason for it...

Hey, if Magic liked the food then it was a good buy!  We won't knock you for that!   Sounds cheaper than tri-tip!

Doggie prozac is the same as people but they give it another name and make it in a chewable beef flavored form. (I can't think of it off-hand)  I actually got the RX for her  a couple of years ago when I had a bright idea that she just needed something to keep her from being scared.  But I only gave her one since she was just sleepy on it.

But after Rugby died - we ALL were so depressed!  I couldn't take one more day of deep depression and revisited the dog prozac for her!  And then after the one with tramadol, I chickened out on giving anymore.  And darnit, we couldn't find a dog for her!  I scoured the shelter every day! All that was there it seemed was chihuahuas and pitties (no offense to either but one was too small and one was too big and neither would understand her complex personality) Plus, we wanted a shepherd so bad and none were there.

A funny story, I even scoured Craig's list for any foreclosure dogs.  Someone posted a miniature german shepherd (no pics) but a lot of details.  We were estatic!  A small shep!  It was a very young girl who found it and she lived in an apt.  It was late Saturday night and we called and she said to come over and see it!  Like idiots knowing this was the answer to our prayers, we drove across town at 11pm at night to some stranger's apartment determined this was our dog!  We would never do that in our right minds!

We got there and the girl brought the dog out and OMG - it was a chihuahua!!!!!!!!! Okay, it sorta had German shep markings. But it was a chihuahua!!  Our hearts sank.  Be he and I had a good laugh all the way home.

We joke about stuffing Harley, too ... or mounting his head like a deer.  At least I THINK we are joking; sometimes I'm not so sure Michael is.  We wish we would have kept the leg to make a lamp out of it.  wink

I would actually like to turn Harley into a diamond.  Has anyone looked at that or know anyone who has done this?  Evidently you can send some ashes (I think you could send hair, as well) to the company and they create a diamond out of the carbon.  It's expensive (of course).  My Brother-in-law told jokingly told me I would only be able to get a 3/4 carat diamond, not a whole carat, because of the missing leg. smile

Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.
