Hey all,

It’s been a while since I checked in with a post, but I have been lurking and reading a lot. Teddy is just about one year post amp (8/7/20). During April’s scans, he was found to have a splenic vein clot which we had to treat with Xarelto (SO EXPENSIVE). We just had our quarterly scans yesterday and he is still cancer free AND even better - the splenic vein clot is dissolved!  So now we can go on just Plavix.

I was told by our oncologist that “median” survival is about 30 months for periarticular HS with no spread treated with amp and chemo. As he approaches his one year post amp, I have been more reflective lately wondering what’s next?  I am trying to Be More Dog but sometimes my critical thinking nurse brain hops to the end of the line.

I have such a hard time finding info on localized HS, and I’m trying to figure out if there are any long term survivors past the 30 month mark?  I know some people on this forum have been around from conception, so I’m not sure if you can recall any.

I know each pupper is different and there are outliers on either end of the median survival. I obviously want him to be on the high end being so young (5.5 years old at diagnosis). Either way we are living our best life.

WOAH! Wow you guys, it's WONDERFUL to hear from you! smiley_clapAnd to know that Teddy is kicking cancer's butt, well this just made my day!!!

OK I guess we need to add him to this article now:

Tripawd Tuesday: Canine Histiocytic Sarcoma Heroes

But first, a few more words about Teddy and some pics so we can do that.

Sorry your picture didn't show up. This is how adding images to the Forums works.

  • Upload pics to a photo sharing site like imgur.com or your own Tripawds blog (https://tripawd...../supporter). Pictures and video have to be hosted (live) somewhere other than in the forums.
  • Once the photo is uploaded somewhere, right click and copy the Image URL or just copy the image if you’re on a phone
  • Return to your Tripawds Forum post and paste the image URL (or the image itself) in your post. It should automatically appear.

If you’d like help figuring out the process let me know.

Hi ~

How wonderful to hear that Teddy has done so well!

I'm Murphy's mom - he made it over 4 years after his amputation for periarticular histiocytic sarcoma - he had his right front leg removed.  He had 6 doses of CCNU and then we waited.  X rays, ultrasounds, waiting ... lol and I finally said no more, we'll just watch and time went on, and on, and on.  At about the 3 1/2 year mark we drove to Chicago and participated in a PuppyUp walk where we first met some other Tripawd members.  The following spring we (just my husband & myself) drove down to Virginia for the Epic Tripawd Party!  I'm one of the members who gets together yearly with a group and we reminisce about our babies.  We eventually lost Murphy to a hemangiosarcoma, totally unrelated to his original cancer - so unfair!  He never had any mets - we did do an x-ray at almost 4 years just out of curiosity, since it had been so long and his lungs were still clear.

Murphy was a wonderful spokesdog for cancer survivors and Tripawds everywhere!  He was a very happy dog and definitely taught us how to just keep going.

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17
