Definitely a "helicopter" parent here (and I don't even have two-legged kids). I didn't used to be this neurotic (only since she got cancer) but clearly being overly protective has served her well and kept the wineries in business with all the wine I buy to consume to calm my nerves! Ha ha! blush

Feel better Marshall! Keep us posted!

Hugs!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Oh, poor Marshall. And poor you. It's so hard when we know something is wrong, but we don't know exactly what it is or how to fix it. You are doing everything right, everything that you can for him. You are a great mom!

Let us know what the vet says, and how he's doing!

Dexter yes and we also had a chest X-ray last Saturday bc of his rapid breathing and lethargy. Dr. Mason had brought up the possibility of aspiration pneumonia or blood clot with me the other day. She has me checking his temp often and so far so good.

He is only 12 days post amp and Dexter had lethargy and heavy panting for two weeks after op whilst he was on meds. He also had a weak bark and it must have been from the tube in his throat as its fine now. Fingers crossed its just something simple and clears up:)

This journey that our pet's cancer or injury has taken us on has definitely made us all slightly neurotic.....and I do have two-legged offspring.....but they could tell me if something hurt :(

I was waiting for Erica to chime in (which she has) because I remember that Jilly liked to stress her out right before her xrays by coughing...hmm.

I'm glad you called the vet and that you are being vigilant about your concerns.....Marshall needs you to be his advocate right now!

Try to relax....snuggle with Marshall....drink wine....eat chocolate or chips/crackers....or better yet...post in these forums or come into the chat room .

We are all there to support each other!

Hugs

The dripping salivia is definite sign of nausea.  He is still taking pain meds? Is he taking them with food?  If not it can be upsetting his tumming and giving some acid reflux.  Erica is right try giving him pepcid.  I am no vet when I say this but Sassy was 129 pounds and the vet said i could give up to 60 mg of pepcid.  so i tried 20 mg 3xs a day which helped out some.

Poor Marshall, he surely seems to be having a rough time through all this. Just want to add my continuing support for him and you, all this stuff is hard to deal with most of the time. I do agree with everyone, any little difference in behavior or whatever, sends us into frantic-land. Hang in there, things will get better as the days go by.

Thanks everyone! His mood is picking up but he does cry from pain. Started Gabapentin hopefully that makes him feel better. X-ray in his other front leg was clear! Yay! Starting Pepcid for his nausea and also decreasing Metcam since he weighs less now.

Yippeeeee for clear x-rays!

The gaba may take a few days to kick in but it should help, as should decreasing the metacam, maybe he was just getting too much?

Thanks everyone. He originally was getting 80# dosage of Metacam before his surgery bc he started at 84#'s. After his surgery I dropped it to 75# mark. I think that I'm going to give him tramadol until the Gabapentin kicks in since something is painful for him. Does anyone know if I can give Pepcid around the same time as Metacam? The vet said to give Pepcid in am Metacam pm but that means he has to wait until morning for Pepcid and he seems nauseous.

I think that some antacids affect the absorption of other drugs. I don't know if Pepcid will affect the Metacam. I know in people they say to wait two hours before or after, but I don't know if it's the same for a dog. Sorry. Maybe you can give the Pepcid tonight and start the Metacam tomorrow?

Also, just as a side note, my dog has reflux and he takes Pepcid twice a day. He's 93 lbs and gets 20 mg 2x daily. Just hoping someone can explain why some dogs take it once a day and others twice a day.

Hugs,
Carol

I too think it can block absorption, I would call the vet. Let us know their answer. By the way, grated ginger over food can ease the nausea too and doesn't interfere with meds.
