Does anyone know what this could be? I have heard it off and on but since last night we have heard it often. It's kind of like a gagging noise/ cough but not loud. Kinda like a person clearing their throat when they are sick. It's weird bc he's slowing acting better but now making this noise often and when he moves. His breathing is still fast most of the time but I'm just happy he's perking up some.

Could easily be some tye of allergy thing going on...dry heat, etc.

This started after his romp in the snow, right? The cold could have irritated his throat.

I KNOW every little hiccup, burp or sneeze throws all us tripawd people off the deep end!! Unless yo see anything else major gong n, I REALY wouldn't worry. IF it does contnue, he could indeed have a little bit of debris or something stuck in his throat so you would want to get that checked.

Glad he's continuing to recover nicely!

Hugs a d love!

Okay, they would have done a chest xray before and that was clear right?

It could be his throat is tender and swollen still from the incubation tube they put in when they do the op, or as Benny says an allergy..x

Dexter yes and we also had a chest X-ray last Saturday bc of his rapid breathing and lethargy. Dr. Mason had brought up the possibility of aspiration pneumonia or blood clot with me the other day. She has me checking his temp often and so far so good.

Is it anything like this?

Jill LOVES to do this to me RIGHT before her chest x-rays.  Vet seems to think it could either be a little acid reflux or just her getting something stuck in her throat.  Try maybe giving some pepcid, if it's acid reflux that could help.

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. I agree that unless things seem very wrong and all else is normal, you should try not to worry about it for now. It's so easy to focus on all sorts of things we never noticed before. You might want to chalk this up to allergies for now, or it could be that his esophagus got irritated from being under anesthesia.. One Tripawds member spent a lot of money chasing this kind of sound down (her dog also has osteo) and it turned out to be a foxtail. If your vet is aware and keeping an eye on it I would do my best not to worry right now.

Rica55 the noise does sound kind of like that without the higher sound though. I agree that I def do focus on every and any thing he does now.

I don't have anything to offer other than I, too, am freaking out about every little thing Shelby does right now that seems off kilter. Lately she has taken to licking her nose/chops ... a lot (it seems to me). Her vet assures me she's fine and does not have a foxtail (because then she would rub her nose on things) or bloat (she would be crazy unhappy). It's crazy-making for sure when they are perfectly fine! I think it's ultra dry here in LA and I am licking my lips a lot more so perhaps she's mocking/mimicking me so perhaps you've got an allergies situation going on over there.

Good luck!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

My dog gags sometimes if he's eaten too fast, almost like he got a piece of food stuck in his throat. He also does a cough type thing when his reflux is really bad. Is Marshall on any meds? If he is, maybe Jill's mom is right and he does have a bit of reflux going on. Her suggestion of Pepcid (of course ask your vet) might work and shouldn't be harmful.

Shelby's mom, I hope you see this...licking "chops" is sometimes a sign of nausea. Is Shelby on any Pepcid or anti-nausea meds? I know she's had a lot stomach issues lately, so maybe she would benefit from some Pepcid, too. And, believe it or not, some dogs will still eat when they have upset tummies.

Thanks everyone I don't know what's going on with him. He's being more social than any other day since surgery but every time he gets up and starts to walk he sounds like he had trouble breathing and a phlegm ball in his throat. He also is dripping saliva

I don't know about the "phlegm ball" sound, but dripping saliva is a very common sign of nausea. I would contact the vet about some meds to see if they help...Pepcid or an anti-nausea med. Poor guy!

Yeah, I agree -the dripping saliva isn't good, I don't think. What does your vet say?

And Carol, I did ask her vet about the licking of the nose and chops and they didn't seem concerned since she is such a voracious hungry, hungry hippo eater! She's on meds for her colitis issues so that has cleared up. Interesting, a friend of mine had her dog groomed and they shaved his whiskers straight off so he's licking at his face too. So I wonder since Shelby lost ALL her whiskers w/her chemo treatments if perhaps it is growing back in and she's itchy? It's getting more sporadic (the licking)... I only saw her do it once or twice today before work. She also sticks her face WAY into the grass now to smell things (with no whisker buffers). But I will ask them again if she might feel a tad nauseated (I know when she's been nauseated post-chemo she will turn her nose up at food). Thank you!

I should have known that you had checked into it. We neurotic moms are all the same :-)

I'm happy Shelby is feeling better.

Marshall, I hope you continue to feel better every day!

Hugs,
Carol
