This is more of a vent than anything else so apologies in advance.

I'm feeling really guilty about putting my poor pup, Muji (a 12YO Samoyed) through chemo.

She was just starting to feel awesome again (we had to amputate her front leg after she broke it on New Years Eve) - and now she's lost her appetite and is really lethargic because of the chemo (had her first session on Monday).

I guess I just thought it would be smoothe sailing because her post-amp recovery was so good and I'd heard of so many dogs being unaffected by chemo.

Muji has hermangiosarcoma - which is rare for Samoyeds and rarely shows up in the bone. I looked at Muji tonight and she looks sad, cut up and just not the happy pup from just a few days ago.

I know I need to temper my expectations. I just hope things start turning around soon.

This whole thing just really sucks.

*sigh*

Venting is totally allowed here!  This is an emotional journey like no other.  We all need to vent at times.  So vent to your hearts content.  Our Max always got very lethargic for the first few days after chemo.  We were lucky with his appetite though he never missed a meal.  Many here seem to breeze through chemo with little or no side effects.  But there are some also here that have stopped the chemo because the side effects impacted the quality of their lives too dramatically. And of course some who have totally opted out of chemo going with holistic treatment and some who chose to do nothing more at all after amp.  That is the one good thing of getting to this point.  You don't have to be locked in to anything.  If you think Muji's quality of life won't be where you want it to be you may want to re-evaluate your treatment plan.  There are no right or wrong choices to make here we make the best choices we can with the love we carry for our furfaces to give them the best quality of life we can.  There are no guarantees no matter what we chose to do. No matter what you choose to do if it's a choice made out of love it will be the right one.  Hopefully tomorrow will bring a better day for Muji.  We know how hard this all is and we're right here for you whenever you need us.  Hugs to you and the beautiful Muji.

Hi There!

Linda is spot on about the choices we all make w/ chemo. I know it is hard to see them down again after all they've been through. Our Ellie had a very consistent post-chemo dip in energy and appetite. Each time we approached a chemo day we debated all over again whether we should continue. If her side-effects had been more severe, we probably would not have continued because quality of life is so important.

We all want life to go back to normal after amputation, but when you're doing chemo it is never quite normal. One thing to consider asking your vet about is giving her fluids along w/ the chemo. It is just supportive therapy but for our Ellie it really seemed to help. And Ellie also had a reduced dose after the first round because her WBC counts dipped more than they would have liked so that is another option to consider w/ your vet.

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise

Hi Karsha and Muji,

I absolutely know what you are going through, I posted on your other forum post about my Polly having a difficult time with chemo, specifically doxorubicin...... Yes, it is true that most dogs have minimal effects from chemo, and then there are the few others that have much more difficulty. It took two chemo sessions, and repeated trips to the vet E.R. to finally get my Polly to tolerate her chemo very well. Like Denise said, sometimes supportive care makes all the difference, and I can say from experience, that fighting hemangiosarcoma and it's awful and quick symtoms, you need all the fighting power you can have. Talk to your vet about using anti-nausea meds such as Cerenia and or metaclopramide, appetite stimulants like Mirtazapine, pepcid to help for the tummy, and yes, fluids are good, but my Polly needed fluids because of her continual vomiting and diarrhea. Metronidazole is good for diarrhea, and yep, Polly was on a concoction of ALL these meds to combat her side effects, but it was worth it. Hopefully you won't have to deal with all these meds, but they are certainly there to use if you need them.

I do believe both Linda and Denise made very good points in their posts, so I just want to add a bit more from my point of view and experience.

As I have also learned after the fact, combining holistic avenues in combination with chemo, can also be very valuable against fighting ugly hemangiosarcoma. Perhaps finding a holistic vet in combination with your vet oncologist, will give your sweet Muji the best chance possible to fight this particular ugly cancer. I know it seems overwhelming at times, and like Linda said, you definitely have to decide how you want to tackle this unwanted journey, no decision is wrong and you have to truly consider Muji's quality of life. I went full on with my Polly because I just wanted to fight this terrible cancer after losing my Maggie very quickly to it before Polly, and I regret not doing more, like the holistic options available, but my Polly still beat hemangiosarcoma for almost 14 months. Most vet oncologists are more than willing to discuss all treatments possible including holistic so I just want to throw it out there for you.

Remember that we are all here for you, and will help you through this journey, you are definitely not alone here. 😊

Sending supportive {{{Hugs}}}

As someone else who battled ugly hemangiosarcoma... is it possible to try a different chemo? Maybe discuss those options with your oncologist? There are a couple different ones out there.

Also, Shelby's energy took a minor dip w/her chemo treatments. We had some lack of interest in food but I found if I put her food in one of my bowls, she ate it right up. Or I hand-fed her (which I do not encourage). But chemo can sometimes affect their tastebuds so if you have a metal bowl, maybe try something else?

Also, I would have them check her iron levels. Shelby got slightly anemic from her chemo (and also having a blood based cancer) so we got her some iron pills and that perked her up.

Hugs!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Hi Karsha,

My little Canaan had three rounds of chemo and the third was the worst in terms of her not feeling well.  We switched her to Palladia because the chemo wasn't actually shrinking the lung mets, they grew a little.  I added cannabis oil (CBD) to her regimen because I saw a show called "The Miracle Cure" and I felt it was worth a try.  We go back for reevaluation on February 1st but let me tell you.......this dog feels SO good.  She is happy, getting around, no effects from the Palladia and man can this dog eat.  I didn't like the IV chemo as it stressed her out and made her feel sick.  My vet recommended the Palladia and approved the CBD oil.  Maybe talk to your vet about both?  We do give Patches a daily pepcid as a precaution but overall she's done so well.

There was a time where I questioned my decisions but now five months post amputation I know with 1000% certainty we did the right thing.  No matter what you do you will do in Muji's best interested so you can't go wrong.

I hope this helps.

xoxo

Linda, Denise, Alison, Bonnke, Debbie...all have given great insight!!

So I can only add my lpve and support. Buddy and. Big Lou are two dogs who come to mind who had bad side effects and discontinued chemo. The "good" thing about "bad" side effects chemo (Carboplatin) is that, when you stop, the dog returns to feeling better fairly quickly.

And you vent anytime!! We all do!! Oddly, it seems to help!! We understand the stress of this journey like no others! Muji will get past this temporary hurdle.

Buddy did not tolerate Chemo very well.  We stopped.  It's a personal choice.  I think it boils down to quantity vs quality.   Not sure if this helps or not but every dog is different and you know yours best.  You will make the right choice!  Best of luck and keep us posted!!!!

Just wanted to thank everyone for the kind words and sharing your personal experiences. It is so tremendously helpful to hear first hand from other pup parents who have gone through this.

Unfortunately, today was even tougher for Muji. She started vomitting, panting and drooling. The Cerenia helped, and she did eat a little after that. Poor thing just looks so sad. 🙁

Bonnie and Alison bring up very good points.  With the type of cancer Muji has there are holistic herbs that have shown great promise.  Maybe something to look into maybe in addition to the chemo.  Half of this journey seems to be making decisions that can add to the quality of our furfaces lives.  Hugs!

I hope Muji is feeling better today.

I've been told by a veterinary nutritionist (who I am trying to get on Tripawd Talk Radio ) that a high protein diet with certain percentages of different fats, oils, etc., fed just prior to chemo will cut down on side effects. I wish I could offer more info there but I didn't take notes and am not an expert. However I think if you want to talk to a veterinary nutritionist it's worth a consult. A really good one is located in Georgia, she was Bart the Vizsla's dietician and might be willing to do long-distance consulting. She is Dr. Susan Wynn. I noticed you're in L.A. though, are you by any chance getting care at Veterinary Cancer Group? Lots of great docs there who can help as well.

My dog just went through his chemo protocol, and i found that diffusing Peppermint essential oil in the room where he was really helped with his nausea. You can use either a candle over water with drops of the oil diffuser, or an electric diffuser if having a candle burning would be too risky. If neither of these options are available, 2-3 drops spaced evenly on a bandanna around his neck might help. Just be careful not to get any in his eyes 🙂

The only thing is to be sure it is PURE essential oil, which can be purchased at any reputable health food type store. Do not use a "perfume" oil as those are chemically based. You can ask the folks at the store for help if you need it- they usually know what to recommend as far as the brands they carry. I do NOT recommend the young living or do-terra types of oils tho, as peppermint oil is fairly inexpensive (it has a high yield ratio) and those suppliers jack their prices and advise unsafe practices of use.

I am not a doctor, but have been a practicing aromatherapist for over 20 years, (and am not an agent of any particular brands) so if you have any questions please let me know
