Etta had her first acupuncture and physical therapy appointment this
morning.  She loved the acupuncture!  She just laid there peacefully with
the needles in.  It lasted for about 15 minutes and then she got a shot of
B-12.  This was followed by massage and stretches with the Physical
Therapist.  She seemed like her old self after which warmed our
hearts!

Once we got her home she had a short burst of energy and has now been
sleeping for about 5 hours....  Here are a few pics:

Wow - so amazing!  It looks like this acupuncture and physical therapy made Etta feel really good.  It must really help following a major surgery like this (I didn't even know to do something like this after Mackenzie's surgery but I imagine it could have really helped her since she had a difficult recovery period.)  Thanks for sharing!

Kami (Mackenzie's Mom)

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

WOW! What a good doggie Etta was to just lie there patiently with all those needles stuck in her. I've never had acupuncture myself, so I really have no clue what that feels like. Thanks for sharing the pictures... very interesting... Hope she continues to feel good!!

OMG!  You guys are funny!  Hey i want to pack a suitcase and move in with me ; )

On a serious note,  I have a question....  Etta is on day 11 and she seems sooooo  out of it.  I mean she will have short bursts...  like 10 minutes and then sleep the rest of the day.   It almost seems that she has less energy now than when she came home.   I had taken her off of tramadol  (weaned her) yesterday but today I gave her one...  (she had been taking 2 pills three times a day) and I think it helped some but still ... I'm getting worried...  Is this normal?

I think it's pretty normal... It's a big surgery that Etta went through... so the trauma of that plus the pain meds... Jake also slept alot after his surgery... Don't forget, the remaining 3 legs now have to support the body, and so you can just imagine how tired Etta is getting from that as well.

As long as she's eating and drinking well, peeing and pooping, no fever and no funky smell coming from her incision... things should be OK. But if you're worried, you can always call or go and see your vet. When in doubt... check it out!

I agree with Angel Jake's Mom - I remember when we took Mackenzie off her pain meds, it took a couple of days before we saw any changes.  It's passing through their system so this seems pretty typical of what happens...not quite back to normal yet.   I think it was at the 14th day mark where Mackenzie showed instant, dramatic improvements...so you probably have a couple more days to go with Etta.  Hang in there...I'm sure it will be all ok. Keeping oiur paws crossed!

Julie, these photos are GREAT! Thank you so much. It's wonderful to hear that it's helped her to feel better.

It reminds me of when I had acupuncture: My Visit to the Animal Acupuncture Doctor In Colorado.

I would think that her tiredness is behavior. I think I remember the vet telling me that I would probably go home and crash and burn for a bit after acupuncture because all the toxins in my body (whatever those are..not sure but they sound terrible!) were working their way out after a long time of being trapped.

If you're concerned be sure to call your vet. Actually, I would just call anyways to let them know she had this reaction after acupuncture. Give it a couple of days and see how she goes. If you're worried, call again, but I'll bet you in a few days all of that released chi will help her get back on the road to recovery.

What a pawesome Mom you are! Thanks again.
