Clinical trial with Palladia with dogs with pulmonary metastatic osteosarcoma

Well we are sad to say that Tiff has a visible mass in her lung.  We did a recheck a month later and it is growing about 15%.  CSU has a clinical trial that is looking at the efficacy of using Palladia in these groups of dogs.  The numbers are low so there is really no statistics to go on, but at this point quality of life is really a key issue for us.

She is on pain meds right now for hip arthritis, she has a slight tear in her left back knee.. So these "happy pills" are great for her and she is bright eyed, playful, has a great appetite....  Realistically doing nothing.. maybe 4 months, but with the Palladia maybe 2 more months or more or less..

I would like to know all of the stories out there about anyone's experience with this drug in terms of the side effects.

Thanks for any insight!

Ohh I'm so sorry to hear about those nasty mets. But for now, she's happy and that's what counts, she's not letting it get her down, that's great!

You're so fortunate to be near CSU for further treatment. Always remember, nine out of ten statistics are wrong! ;) Many dawgs defy those odds so keep hope in your heart and so will we.

Hmm, it looks like you and Lexi's Mom, Deb, are on the same mission right now. Deb just posted that she too is looking for experiences with palladia.

I am sorry we never tried it with Sassy.  It was too costly for us  🙁  I wish we could have but with the drug itself, the monitoring we were looking at $ 1400.00 for a 129 pound Rottie when she got mets.  I would have done it if we had the money.

Hey there,

Posting a little late in the game.  But I thought I'd chime in on the palladia thread.  Our Charlie got through three carbo treatments and had lung mets pop up on x-rays at the visit for the fourth treatment last week.  We enrolled in the palladia clinical trial, as well.  So far, he's doing really well with it--better than he did with carbo.  How is it going for you now?

Heather and Charlie

Charlie, our English yellow lab, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in February 2014. He became a tripawd on February 24th, with clear lymph nodes and lungs, but that didn't last long. After three doses of Carbo, in May 2014, x-rays showed lung mets. We briefly tried Palladia, which went well. Unfortunately, Charlie developed unexplained complications in his hind limbs. We said a reluctant farewell on June 11, 2014. Still miss our boy each and every day.

Thanks, Sally!

Just capturing for posterity (i.e. any future searchers) that Charlie is tolerating the palladia well two weeks out.  He has had no GI side effects, his energy is great, and he just had a physical and blood work at CSU that came out fine.  We won't have follow up chest x-rays until 8 weeks out, so it's obviously hard to tell what kind of impact it's having on the lung mets.

Also for future searchers, the study is through CSU and OSU--and I believe UW-Madison has a similar study.  Through CSU, the study pays for the meds and chest x-rays, but not physicals and blood work--and it's an opportunity to contribute.  Who knows?  We chose this over doxorubicin due to quality of life concerns.  When it comes right down to it, it's a toss up, and we're hoping for good things with the palladia.

Best of luck to anyone considering it!

Thanks for updating us on Charley! We love good news around here!

It's great that Charley appears to be sailing through the treatments with o side effects. Very encouraging for anyne considering Palladia.

And Charley is feeling great and enjoying the heck out of all the loving and spoiling you have immersed him in! He doesn't know he's "sick" and doesn't care about any ole' stupid diagnosis!

We are al cheering for you Charley! Yor happy avatar photo just melts my heart! You are so full of joy! We woukd LOVE to see more photos!

Sending hugs and extra treats...and a few extra tummy rubs!!

Hi, Sue -- any updates on Tiff? I hear you on quality of life issues. I stopped Palladia pretty quickly due to gastro side effects, and now part of me is wondering if I should have kept up the Palladia and done more to manage the initial side effects. Maybe it would have helped if I had given it more time. What pain meds are you giving her for arthritis, btw? Are you doing K9 Immunity plus and other supplements? We just started that.

Heather, thanks for sharing your positive experiences with Palladia. Go Charlie! Like you, I also wanted a Doxy alternative since Lexie hates needles and quality of life is important at this stage.

Best of luck to Tiff and Charlie...fingers and paws crossed!

Joined Club Tripawd April 2014 & Lexie loved life on 3 legs! Advice: Start physical therapy as soon as your vet clears it, especially hydrotherapy if available :-) See Lexie pics here.

Hi there,

Don't second guess yourself.  If Charlie had side effects, we would immediately take him off, no question.  We agreed on that as soon as we heard "mets".  Like you said, it's about quality of life.  It's so hard when you get one of the really aggressive cancers, and then hear stories about what has worked for years with other dogs.  It's easy to feel like you should have done something differently.  I don't believe that at all.  I love my boy so, so desperately.  He has taken care of me for so many years and now it's my turn to do the best for him--not to give him half a life in order to prolong it.  You're doing the very best for your Lexie, I'm sure of it.  She is so well-loved.  Stick with that.  Do what your heart and gut tell you to be best.  Big hugs.
