Ruari (pronounced Rory) is a 5 and 3/4 year old Irish Wolfhound who has been on the Bones and Raw Food diet her entire life.  We are new to this forum and will post her entire background info ASAP, but right now we have an urgent question...

Rauri had her left front limb amputated on 5-16-2012 at Ohio State Vet School.  She is on metronomic chemo which consists of Palladia, Cyclophosphamide and Rimadyl.

After a few days on this treatment, her rear legs became weak and she started having diaherra.  She became weak and had a pained expression on her face.  Her appetite was OK, except she stopped eating apples.

OSU told me to stop the treatment for a week.  Ruari began the Palladia again yesterday.  When we woke up this morning, the pained look was back and she is lethargic.  She gets her next dose of Palladia on Monday.  I am reluctant to give it to her and will call OSU before I do.

Has anyone else had problems with Palladia?

Hi Ruari.  Magnum was on Palladia for 1 month before we stopped due to GI issues.  I understand from a number of other people on this site that they have also experienced GI issues. Based on our experience I would strongly advise anyone taking Palladia to ask their vet for medications to take on a daily basis to protect them from an upset tummy.

I'm not sure about the weak back legs.  Magnum had issues there too but it wasn't due to the Palladia.

Good luck!  Let us know how you go.

Karen and Spirit Magnum

Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/

Yes, we had issues with it. Abby was on it off and on for 3 months, but we had to stop as her GI issues got worse. We also later tried Masitinib which is roughly the same drug except from Europe. She had GI issues with that as well. At one point on the Masitinib, her back legs started to shake. It was the weekend but the onc's office was open. I called and they said to stop giving it to her until we could come in and see our usual onc again. They siad that was a side effect of the drug, but in the end it ended up being something else.

When we stopped the Palladia, for a long time Abby was on just cytoxan and Piroxicam.
All the best,
Jackie, angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Thank you, Karen and Jackie.  I goofed when I set up my profile...Sophia is my name...Ruari is my Wolfie's name.  I hope I can change the name under the avitar.

Ruari did not have Pallidia yesterday.  She's off it today as well.  She's supposed to start it again on Monday.

When we woke up today, Ruari looked almost like her old self.  The pained look is gone.  She is a little more active.  I think the Palladia knocks her for a loop.

The last time she took it it took a few days for the diaherra to kick in and for her rear legs to get weak.  She looked SO BAD.

Jackie, what caused Abbey's legs to shake?

For what it is worth, my vet oncologist just prescribed Palladia for my dog.  She is having me give Prilosec (over the counter antacid for people) specifically to help with stomach upset that she says can occur with Palladia.  Check with your vet to see if that might be an option for your dog and what dosage would be appropriate   Also, my vet said I should not be giving Rimadyl on the same day as the Palladia, so we will be alternating days.     This is a fascinating and helpful site, and I will join officially very soon!   Joan
