My bestfriend, Tembo, was diagnosed last Tuesday, his left front limb was amputated last Thursday. He will be ready to start chemo next week and his vet prescribed Carboplatin. Does anyone have experience with their dog being treated with Carboplatin? How much did it cost per treatment?  Also, to complicate things, we are moving next week. Can anyone recommend a vet in the Nashville area? Thank you for your help, I am really glad this website is here, it has been so helpful.

Hi New Member! Sorry to hear about your buddy's diagnosis, but you've come to a great place for support.  Trouble took 5 Carboplatin treatments and did very well.  She had some minor nausea for the first 12 - 24 hours.  After some treatments she had some chills.  The price, I think you will find runs a pretty wide range, depending on the location, how much competition exists, etc.  I think Trouble's Carboplatin was about $500 each, plus administration and blood work.

I know it will be tough for you to move with all this taking place, but the chances are the treatments will not be so bad, and once you are through the 2 week recovery from the surgery, life for Tembo will begin to return to normal.  I'm hoping someone can jump in with a recommendaiton for a vet.  I'm on the Gulf Coast, so I can't help with finding a new vet.

Welcome and please keep us updated on Tembo's progress.

Tembo!  You're from Wisconsin!!!  I hope it's Nashville, WI you're moving to, though that's still quite far and so, sadly, I don't know any vets in your neck of the woods.  I've only seen people on here from Madison or Milwaukee, I think, but not everybody advertises where they're from - paws crossed that someone will have a tip for you.  I'm so very sorry you had the need to find Tripawds, but very glad you did!

Tembo looks soooo much like my Gerry!!!  Or Gerry looks so much like Tembo - at least in that picture.  And is he a doberman or dobe mix?  Don't know if Gerry is.  He could be a Black and Tan Hound mix or something, but my Yoda (though he didn't have the traditional coloring) was definitely a doberman mix.

Ok, but back to business, Yoda had osteosarcoma and received carboplatin, also with mild symptoms.  Yoda was diagnosed a year ago with osteosarcoma and had his amputation and chemo done through UW Madison.  I can get back to you on how much we paid, thought there could be significant difference even within our state.  Unfortunately, Yoda was on the other spectrum from Trouble as far as survival time,  and passed away in mid-October.  Like Trouble though, Yoda's side effects  to the chemo were mild and easily taken care of by medication (Cerenia for nausea, usually).  And our final four months together were much better quality than I would have imagined and totally worth the amputation.  I feel very confident in saying Yoda would have agreed with me on that, if he could have answered for himself.  Even after the amputation and while he was undergoing chemo, there were lots of romps at the dog parks, tennis ball playing and he even caught a rabbit in the yard on his three legs!  Yoda didn't finish all his chemo treatments before getting lung mets, but he had great quality time even after those were found.  And I know I would have blamed myself for not doing chemo, if I hadn't tried it for Yoda - but that's a very personal thing.  You'll do the best possible for Tembo, we know.  All routes have been taken by pawrents around here - chemo, holistic treatments, nothing but love, etc.

Best wishes for the move and finding the perfect vet.  Bummer about the extra stressful timing.

I'll rooting for Tembo to blow past Yoda's survival time in great shape.  Hang in there and I hope you'll keep us posted on how Tembo does!

(Gerry is a tripawd too by the way, but due to injury)

Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.

He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

Welcome, Tembo and bestfriend. So sorry about Tembo's diagnosis. You've got a plateful of stress dealing with Tembo's recovery and a move next week.

Can't recommend a vet; pretty much living in the North Pole here in Canada. Our girl Catie's carboplatin treatments cost about $700 each, including bloodwork etc., etc. She didn't do too bad after the carboplatin; some loss of appetite, lethargy, weakness, general malaise. SHe was on a protocol of two different medications: the other, doxorubicin, had nastier, longer term side effects. We hated that drug. We wound up doing three rounds of carboplatin and two of doxorubicin and then we decided, enough. We were told the benefits of doing six treatments was inconclusive.

Tembo, you're a handsome dude. Sending you many many healing wishes.

Hey Tembo!  We're in So Cal, so also cannot reccomend a vet, but we have experience with Carboplatin.  Max did 6 rounds of Carboplatin, with minimal side effects. He was a little tired about 24 hours after the treatment; also, on treatments 5 & 6 he had some nausea, with vomiting and diarrhea.  Our oncologist was pretty surprised by this, because Carboplatin has very minimal side effects, that's one of the reasons it's so expensive (our treatments were about $1,000 each, with bloodwork).  So, we were never sure if #5 & 6 were the chemo, or something else.  Anyway, Max did very well on Carbo and was a 14-month osteo survivor.

Good luck to Tembo and you.

Diane

Wow, you guys are amazing. Thank you for the input, kind words and positive thoughts. I have found a vet that looks promising, but that's just by the website and still would very much welcome personal recommendations for vets in the Nashville, TN area.

Gerry's mom, I currently live in Madison, but am moving to Tennessee. I am excited about the move but sad to leave Madison, especially now with Tembo's needs....  By the way, he is a rotty/german shepherd mix (maybe a little beagle too b/c of the white and brown spotted paw, which I find to be so cute.)

Carmen, thank you for the complement, I've always thought he was so handsome too 🙂 I've heard that doxorubicin is nasty stuff. I'm sorry Catie prescribed that.... it's good you are letting others know about it.

Hugapitbull and Jerry'sPack, thank you for the info and direction.

Comet's mom, thank you for the welcome.

🙂

Diane,

Thank you for the info. 14 months sounds so great, what a lucky mom you are. I hope we have similar good fortune. When the vet showed me the x-ray and said it was a tumor I was completely crushed for days. I thought it was a death sentence. My aunt found this website for me and now we are hopeful, so thank you.

I had no idea there was a Nashville, WI … I had to google that.  wink

I'm sorry you had to join our little club, but you will find tons of great advice and support here.  I'm assuming Tembo has bone cancer?  We are dealing with a different form of cancer (Histiocytic Sarcoma), so we had a different kind of chemo (CCNU/Lomustine), & I cannot help you out with your chemo question on price.  Sorry.

Is there perhaps a Vet School in Nashville where you could do chemo treatments?  Did you go to UW for amputation?  Maybe they would be able to recommend someone?

I hope your move goes well (talk about extra stress when you don't need it!).  Sorry you are leaving Madison … Gerry throws great Pawties (or so I hear, since we didn't make the Pawtyconfused).

Keep us updated on how Tembo is doing!  Hope all goes smoothly for him!!

Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.

Tembo, we're sorry you had to join the club but we're glad you found us. You sound like a lot of fun! Welcome!

It's late so I gotta wrap this up quick but I just wanted to tell you we have a fun member here, "East Tennessee Gayle" who can probably give you some recommendations. She just finished up her own chemo. Is East Tennessee near Nashville? Oooh, I'm so bad, I don't do very well with geography! Anyhow, Gayle is more active in her blog than the forums so drop her a line there OK?

Good luck with all that you've got going on. We know you'll keep your pawrents sane through all this. Hang in there and keep us posted.

i heard my name.....  we live in knoxville, which is about 2 and a half hours or so east of nashville.  the only vet school i know of in TN is here at UTenn.... i highly recommend my vets here in knoxville, but it would be quite a trip for you - unless you want to stay over with us during the treatments....

gayle did five chemo treatments of doxirubicin (finished the last this past monday..yeah!!).  don't know much about the carbo stuff, other than what i read here...

if you want me to ask my vet for recommendations of vets in the nashville area, i sure will - i trust their judgement, as they (IMHO) saved gayle's leg after the vet school scrapped it and it got infected (ugly story..).

anyway, i'm rambling, but welcome and let us know if we can help in anyway here in TN..

Hi Gayle and Charon,

Thank you for your generous offer. I have made an appointment with Hillsboro Veterinary Hospital in Nashville. If you could, I would really appreciate you asking your vet if they know anything about them. They have experience doing chemo, that's why I chose them. Thank you for coming on to this forum to offer us help, we really really appreciate it.

Ack!  Yoda had white paws with some little brown spots!  Probably for totally different reasons (sure didn't see any Beagle in him), but awwwww...  and you're a big boy too big-grin

Oh, Tembo I'm so bummed Madison will be losing you guys! cry  But Nashville, TN is probably an easier place to find veterinary options than up in Nashville, WI... maybe... I dunno... but at least Gayle has input from not too far away from where you're headed.

If you ever come back to visit Madison, I'd be happy to throw together a tripawd pawty at one of the local dog parks for the occasion!  i was totally going to try to rope you into coming to our next one, but sounds like you'll be gone  by then and perhaps Tembo won't be ready for the park before you go.  Otherwise I'd say let's have a two-tripawd pawty at least whenever you're free.  It is amazing though how fast they are ready to get back to running and playing as long as the incision heals nicely and someone doesn't manage to lick around his cone collar and make it take an extra two weeks (*ahem* Gerry!)Which is not to say that Tembo won't need to build his stamina back up gradually on one front leg.  At first it may seem like it's taking forever, but by the time he reaches his new normal, you'll be like, "Whoa!  It's only been ______ and he's flying!"

Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.
