Hello,

Our beloved Maguire lost his front leg to a Mast Cell tumour last August. We are months away from his 1 year ampuversary! He has been doing absolutely incredible. Every day I am in awe of his strength, courage and his zest for life!

I came home from work today (just about an hour ago) to find his amputation sight sopping wet from him licking to the point of bleeding. It seems like there is a hard long mass under the skin which is obviously irritating him.

He seems fine in every other aspect - he is eating, drinking, going to the washroom, being social.

Does anyone have any clue what this may be? I immediately called our vet but they are closed. I called a friend who is a vet and left her a voicemail. I am sitting here stressing and so incredibly worried!

We would appreciate any advise!

Thanks,

Kara, Bill and Maguire

I don't have any experience with anything like that, but just wanted to add my best wishes to Maguire.  Maybe there is a 24-hour emergency vet you could give a call to??

Thanks for your reply! I did call the emergency vet but they cannot provide any suggestions as to what we should do unless we bring him in.

One one hand I would prefer our vet to see him since she knows his history and did his amputation but the other part of me wants to rush him to the emergency vet.

As I said he is totally himself in all other aspects so I am not sure.

I am just so scared what this could be...

don't get ahead of yourself, you don't REALLY know what this is at all.  it might be internal stitches that just didn't dissolve and are coming to the surface....it could be an alien that is planning on taking over the northern hemisphere.  i'd suggest putting a t-shirt over maguire for the time being, to cover/protect the site...and off to the vet in the AM.  sending out best wishes for a harmless alien creature!!!!

Hope it turns out to be nothing too serious and the vet can fix him up. (And I really hope it's not the alien thing... That would be, well, bad for everyone involved.)

Hang in there, try to get some rest and keep us posted. Sending pawsitive thoughts out!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. If he is otherwise OK I would wait until the morning and I could see my regular vet.

You need to get it checked, but a long hard mass doesn't sound like another mast cell tumor.  Like Charon said- don't get ahead of yourself- save your worrying until you know what to worry about.

Sending the all powerful Tripawd Chant: B9 B9 B9!!

Please let us know what you find out.

Oh gosh!  I don't think in all the years I've been here, have I heard something like that.........wait, I think Wyatt Ray had something funky on his stump and it wasn't anything serious, if  I remember. Maybe Rene will jump in.

I sure hope it's nothing!

Yes, I was also thinking of Wyatt. It was months and months after his amp, if I remember right. So hopefully it's something similar that is fairly easily fixed up!

Does it look like this?

Name that Icky Spot

Wyatt's issue looked like a foxtail but ended up being foreign matter from the surgery working it's way out. nearly two years later.

Please do have a vet check it out ASAP and keep us posted.

Poor kid! Yep, I'm thinking some kind of foreign matter is the culprit. Let us know what the vet says. Good luck!
