Hi Patricia and Atlas,

I am so sorry that you are going through this, its so hard watching our beloved furbabies fight this deseas.

I also had a 7 year old giant breed with OS and other physical challenges, his name was Porthos. We decided to amputate (front right leg) even though we were not sure if he would ever stand up again, he still had fight in him and we needed to give him that chance. He did very well on 3 legs, charging around, chasing birds in the garden!

Have a look on youtube "Amazing Zane- The Wobbler Syndrome Tripawd" and also "Angus the great Dane on 3 legs" I did at lot of youtube searches when I found out about Porthos' OS, it really helped me to get an idea of what he would look like on 3 legs.

The ruffwear harness is very good, we found a harness that had front and back support better (help em up harness) for Porthos as he had hip dysplasia but to be honest we didnt put it on him that much in the beginning, we couldnt put the front part of the harness on him because of the stitches.

He seemed to get annoyed with me hovering around him the early days after his amp, I seemed to be slowing him down so I let him find his balance and he was fine, the harness was a god send during his final days though.

This is Angel Porthos running around on three legs (I'm a proud Mama!) http://tripawds.....who-could/

Just a tip, remember to keep yourself healthy, eat well, try to get a massage or go for a walk by yourself to clear your mind. We know how stressful and gut wrenching this time is. If you are going to go through with the amputation, try and keep away from anyone who is being negative about the amputation, especially in the first couple of weeks while you are all adjusting, you need positivity and support around you.

Stay strong,

Amanda & Angel Porthos x

Ah! Amanda thank you so much for pointing out Zane's video. His people are members here, going under the name "Grateful Danes." You can PM his person by clicking on this link and checking out the two posts she made a couple of years ago. The Private Message feature is located in her profile by clicking on her avatar, or just clicking the "PM" button to the top right of her posts. Her website is "Grateful Danes," she makes giant dog collars. I don't know how Zane is doing now but hopefully he's still doing great. If you talk to her see if she will come back and update us, it would be nice to hear from her.

Here is Zane's video:

Oh my God.  For the life of me, I don't know what I would do without you all.  Jerry, I can't help thinking it was maybe the reason you had to go through this in order to start this informative site for the rest of us who followed.  all of you are angels!  We dropped Atlas off for surgery this morning and I immediately came home and logged on.  I did great all through the night and this morning, singing Atlas his happy song and keeping the energy positive and enjoying the time with him.  He was doing so well he even joined in the happy song too much with his happy hoppy dance, I had to quit and settle him down cause his sissy wanted to get all rambunctious. It was a clear message - LOTS OF FIGHT left!

The poor boy trembled when we lead him in and I just lost my breathe, but I kept it together and give him the usual lingo he gets when I go run errands.... 'mommy loves you - be good - I'll be back'  Marc and I said our prayers on the way home and a lot of sobs.

I'm just shaking and convulsing as I read everyones posts.  I'm sure you all know what it means to hear people who know exactly what you're going through. Amanda, what an inspiration you and beautiful Porthos are.  I could never live with 'what if' so I feel ok with it.  You especially touched me because we also have a Great Pyr mix rescue who is approaching 10 years and minus her skin allergies, doing fantastic.   And I'm definitely the hovering type so that was a good reality check for me, thanks. We've decided caller id is a wonderful thing and will screen any negative folks from our paths right now.  Marc made me one of our farm fresh eggs for breakfast with a piece of fruit so I'm taking care of Atlas's mom/nurse.  And where I thought last week not a blessing, these past couple of days I have been very happy to have chores every morning in the goat dairy barn to get me outside in the beautiful sunny day.  I had my most clear thoughts when I was out there.  Not to mention, I milked a few does and have a fresh supply of milk to make Atlas his favorite homemade cheese and yogurt.

Sally, such words of wisdom, you helped on a level words cannot express. Marc keeps reminding me how strong I am and what an amazing relationship Atlas and I have but it all keeps feeling so raw, so unable to catch my breath and reading your words was so reassuring.  I'm sure I will flip out again (from all I've read probably sometime around the first week of recovery) and it's nice to know I will be in good company.  And you're right - Atlas can carry the weight of the world, so this will be no problem for him!

I should hear from them after 2:00 and will be back to update.  I'm going to go wash the canvas bag and cut slits in it and watch some more of those videos you were all so wonderful to share.  I can type pretty good, but I don't know much about videos and youtube but my step son filmed this video a couple Christmas's ago.  Opening presents is Atlas most favorite thing to do. Doesn't matter who's birthday or celebration - if he is around and you are opening a present - he is going to help.  But he takes so much time and is so gentle. Little sister Sophie doesn't care about the wrapping - she just waits for the toy to appear and moves in for the swipe.  Atlas doesn't mind, especially when there are tons more gifts to open under the tree.  I hope this works...

Shari, Karen, Erica and Libby's mom, a huge thanks too - everyone just makes me feel like I'm not alone and your stories give me strength.  Thank you.

Shari, you gave Marc and I our first laugh in quite a few days with the 'mother I promise not to euthanize you'  Brilliant!

Great video, Patricia! Atlas is a happy guy with a lot of personality. Sophie seems to have an abundance of personality as well!

Try the shopping bag trick and see if it works for you. If not, you can use a narrower sling. I used a sling the first few days with Dakota because I already had it so didn't need to do the shopping bag thing. Either one will make it really easy to respond to Atlas's needs instantly. It take 2 seconds to loop one or the other around him to help him up or out.

I would help Dakota outside to pee and quickly drop the sling and turn away. D wouldn't perform for an audience so I had to back off and let him figure it out for himself. If I was too close, he would expend energy getting away to a private place. I learned. The first poop was a bit difficult for Dakota to learn how to change his posture, but he figured it out and did just fine. Don't get discouraged if Atlas seems confused by having to try new positions for these things. Dakota seemed most confused about being unable to lift a leg, but once he agreed to try the tripawd boy-dog pee position (that's a trademarked name winker), he was good to go.

I did get a harness but only used it when we went places. It was indispensable for loading and unloading D in the car. It was very helpful for going places with slippery floors because of the handle. And it kept D from running off when he got nervous (at the vet's).

Do you live in the same house that's in the video? If so, what are your hardwood floor plans for Atlas? Throw rugs will be his new best friend. It's easier to keep the dog out of forbidden places, too; you just don't put down a rug into that place. I used yoga mats instead of throw rugs, but you will need something to give him traction .

Make sure you have someone there to help you get him out of the car and into his bed. Put Sophie in a bedroom or something while you get Atlas settled. I didn't do that and had 2 other nosy dogs making things very hard for me when I got home. They were so curious about Dakota going somewhere without them that I couldn't get them to leave for love or money. I wouldn't ever make that mistake again.

Think of questions and write 'em down. Ask your vet. Ask here. Buy whatever you think you need to hide pills in (cheese, liverwurst, pill pockets) and maybe get something to occupy Sophie for a long time (a new bone maybe?), and don't forget a movie or two for you. Do like Atlas--live for the precious moment that's in front of you now. One step at a time.

By the way, I'm kind of partial to left front amps! If you look closely at my avatar, you will see a very happy boy rolling in his meadow, without his left front leg.

Patricia hang in there, this is the longest day ever.

You know, if it wasn't for Moose the big ol' Dane, Tripawds wouldn't be here. If it wasn't for him, my pawrents never would have believed that I could make it on three legs. Once they saw him digging for gophers on YouTube, they were finally convinced said if HE can do it, so could I. And boy did I!

I love that Christmas video, that's my kinda celebration!

Shewww.......finally got the call, been biting nails since 2:00.  Atlas did good in surgery and is in ICU recovering.  He did wake up and make contact and is now resting and heavily sedated.  They said he was snoring loud.  clap

They said the surgery took longer than expected because he is so big there were a lot of veins and arteries to tie or suture as they were too big to cauterize.  Does that sound normal to you guys?

He said that he gets 24 hour monitoring and care from his ICU staff and they will try to get him up at 8:00 tonight to walk and potty.  They said they would call us in the morning after they get him up and potty again.  They also said they have a sling/harness thing that he comes home with so that's good.

The surgeon is supposed to call us later to give us more detail on how surgery went.

For now, just celebrating our first step to victory!

Hi. Just seen this. I have a front right tripawd lurcher who is a saluki type and 29.5kg. He is not as big as a dane but he is a running dog. That is exactly what he still is! He can run as fast as our four leg boy. He is also a very happy dog who loves life. I am disabled myself and he has given me a whole new outlook on life. Today one of my little dogs had to have hernia surgery and I have been so worried. Nicky has been there to cuddle me and offer his shoulder. My little dog has bounced back,he is eating and toileting already. I thought I was going to lose him but my vet said go for the surgery. He has a heart murmur but got through fine.

You are an amazing person. You have given your boy the chance. I bet in no time he will be up and about and showing you he was ready for the fight. I know this sounds like a criticism but it is not.... do not feel sorry for him. When he gets home treat him that this is the beginning of his second life. I did this with Nicky and by day 3 he wanted to walk.He is over a year on now and lives life to the full.

Sending you all big hugs and healing thoughts to the wonderful Atlas.

WOO HOO!  The first hard step is over!  So glad to hear the surgery went well!  Sounds like he is getting GREAT care, so that should help keep your mind at ease just a little bit!  Please keep us posted on his progress and wishing Atlas a warm, happy homecoming!  Let us know what you need!

Yay Atlas!  Keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers!

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

Oh im so glad that the surgery went well, Porthos' surgery took a long time as well.

When you go to pick Atlas up from the vets, if you can, try and look him straight in his eyes and not to focus on the amputation, it can be a bit shocking to see your furbaby missing a limb. I looked at photos of dog amputations on the internet so I new what to expect. It still knocked me for six though when I saw Porthos after the surgery, I had a little peek at him before he knew I was there so I could get over the shock and pull myself together.

Saying that, after a couple of months of him getting back to his old shenanegans I forgot he only had 3 legs and cancer!

It sounds like where you live is such a beautiful environment both mentally and physically, it will be a wonderful place for you all to heal and get back to living life.

I put yoga mats down on the floor initially (he had claimed them anyway!) as he was contained to one room for the first week or so, then I bought very cheap carpet and carpeted the whole house.

I absolutely agree with Dakota Dawg about the harness for getting in and out of the car and also for the vets slippery floor.

Oh yes! I almost forgot about the happy poop dance! when Porthos had his amputation, there were a few other pups on here having their amputations at the same time. Apparently dogs can become a little constipated after the surgery, maybe because of all the drugs, trying to find a new position or everyone standing around watching them! Well, each time someone announce that their dog had finally pooped and they were doing the happy poop dance I got really jealous as Porthos just wasn't going! I think it took 6 days in the end! wow even I felt better afterwords!

Will be thinking of you all and sending positive thoughts,

Amanda & Angel Porthos xxx
