Hang in there - the first few weeks are hard and overwhelming.. but we're here to help!

If he really is in pain (it could be a reaction to the pain meds, not actual pain) talk with your vet about adjusting dosages or adding another med. What is he on on now?

I used an ice pack with a velcro strap for Barret (it was also microwavable and could be used for heat too) and looped it around his head so the ice pack stayed and I didn't need to put any pressure on his wound. The ice helped, then after about a week we switched to heat.

Also, Rene said to relax.. so relax a little. She is absolutely right that if you're in an emotional frenzy, they will pick right up on that and be frenzied too. Try to calm yourself, it WILL get better!

-Heather & Barret

Barret was diagnosed with Hemangiopericytoma May 16, 2013. Front left leg/scapula/pectoral muscle was amputated on June 11, 2013 and we've never looked back. Follow our story on http://barret.t.....pawds.com/ and read my column on That Pet Blog

Zeke is doing better this morning, he kept me up till 3 am at least. He wouldn't sit still unless I was petting him. Even now he isn't happy unless I am close to him. (but I understand that if I had surgery I would want him by me too). I set up a cozy nest in my room. He has his water bowls and food dish (on buckets so they are raised) and some orthopedic beds and my sleeping pads. He has a kind of elastic sling to keep his bandage on so I slip the ice pack in there. As for help, I still live at home I am only 23. And my parents love him as much as I do, so we are coordinating days off to take care of him. I have the first few days of course and will take over once I get home from work (wish I could stay with him 24/7 but I still need to make money to pay for his surgery). I will be on a lot lately I am sure.

The vet called to check up on him this morning and asked how he was doing, I found out the only meds he was on last night was rimadyl they sent home for tramadol but I had figured he had had an injection of it (like his last surgery, this is his third in 2 months, he had a noncancerous tumor in his jaw too) and they didn't tell me when to start me on it. I am a bit disappointed in them for that because normally they are really great about that stuff. So now that he is on pain meds he hasn't been crying almost at all and seems a lot more comfortable.

No I don't have a sling or anything for him I just kind of hold my hand next to his surgery side to steady him. Rember he has been hopping on three legs for probably three weeks now and limping heavily on four for a few weeks before that. His elbow caused him so much pain that he didn't use it unless he absolutely had to (like if he were falling) so he is pretty good at walking around, just a bit unsteady.

And its not so much I was looking for judgment on cremating his leg more like I was wondering if anyone else had done something like that or had heard of it. My vet was very confused but helped me with it.

I am sure as you can tell we are in much better spirts then last night and the day and night before. I think we are just happy to be together and now that we have a routine with the icepacks and such its easier.

I bought the e books to give me something to do all day while watching the pooch and to learn all I can, but I like hardcopies and it would cost a ton to print it out. And I could read it on my I pod but I don't think I could put it on there. You see I like to underline and mark pages so I can reference but I don't think I can do that with the pdf file can I?

One thing I am wondering about though is that he is drinking a lot a  lot of water. I must have refilled his bowl three times this morning and we go out to poddy a lot. Is this normal?

(and because everyone was asking these are the meds he's on.)

Codeine (he wasn't actually prescribed this for this surgery but its a more powerful pain killer then tramadol, so we are going to finnish this up then use the tramadol. My mom used to be a vet tec and recommended it because he seemed so uncomfortable last night)

Gabapentin (which was also prescribed my a different vet, supposed to help with phantom pain )

Rimadyl  (antinflametory)

Cephalexin (antibiotic)

Ohhhh yes, a much better update...relatively speaking!!

And I do not blame you at all for beingmupset avout not having pain meds!! OMD!! I would be incredulous! Yeah, maybe a lot of hospital meds in him, but what about when they got outof his sysyem! Good for you for being so diligent!

Tramadol, gabapentin, rimadyl, cephalexin...all the norm aroun here. Don't have the codene experience...just make sure it can be used with the Gabapentin

Of course, I'm no vet, but the drinking lots of water at first ks pretty normal. It's odd....some come out refusing any water...but most can't seem to get enough!

As far as cremating the leg...interesting. I wasn't even asked. I "assumed" the whole leg was sent off to pathologist, but now I'm thinking not! Would like to hear other takes on this...you have my curiosity up!

YAAAAAAAAA for Zeke showing a little improvement! YAAAAAAAA for pain meds! YAAAAAAAAY for Mom! You are doing a great job! Clearly a well loved boy!! You still have a rough several days and nights ahead. The sparkle will come back slowly vut surely! And when t does.......WOW!....BAM! Happy times filled with loving and spoiling!

Tha ks for the update and we'll look forward to more!

Hugs to all!

After three weeks I finally got the results for Zekes biopsy. Of course its osteosarcoma. I just don't get it he acts so healthy not like he is sick at all. I am going to a cancer specialist today for a consult to talk about options and cemo. I have no idea what to expect with any of this. I was so hoping it wasn't cancer. i don't know what to do, or how much more it will cost. not that I wouldn't gladly spend it. ant comments or advicecrying would be appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear about the diagnosis - I know it can be so shocking, I was shocked as well.  Jill was acting so happy and healthy - I just couldn't believe she had osteosarcoma.

Jill had four rounds of chemotherapy (2 rounds of carboplatin, 2 rounds of doxorubicin).  She sailed through it for the most part.  We had to delay chemo twice because her white blood cell count was too low from the previous treatments, however, you would never have known - she was acting very happy and healthy throughout chemo.

Come on over to the chat room if you have a chance, I'm usually in there and many are in there at night and we can answer any questions you have in real time.

All our love,

Erica & Tripawd Kitty Jill

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Yeah, it's not what anyone wants and, unfortunately, that's pretty much why all of us are here!

Chem os such a personal choice...no right or wrng. Check out the site for questins you should ask your onco. The Dog Cancer Survival Guide is another good resource.

I did decide to go the chemo route with Hapoy Hannah. She's had four rounds of Carboplaten (I think most onco go with five..maybe?) and sailed through the treatment with no side effects! IF dogs have any side effects at all, they can be treated with nausea pills and it's usualy just for a day or two...maybe some lethargic days, but that's usualky the extent of it. You can always stop if there are issues but I REALLY doubt there will be.

For me, I felt like I had to 'try" this route or I would second guess myself if I didn't. Of course, had things not gone well I would have second guessed myself for trying it!! It's such a crap shoot!!

Happy Hannah is going into her nine mnth ampuversary (knocking n wood over here)! We are having the happiest most joyful loving time imaginable!! Spoiled beyond words! Loving life!

You'll make your decision out of love...like you've already done...and it will be the right decision.

So Zeke's recovery has gne well? Gettkng his sparkle back? Every day is such a treasure...enjy each moment to the fullest!

Post more pics when you can. His avatar picture shows such a gentle, sweet soul!

Love and light to you both!

Sally and Happy Hannah

For me, the whole process was completed in less than thirty mnutes at the most. I made each visit a vig deal and wnet through drive-ns and got her a burger each time. Yeah' she's kind of a "plus size model"

Do your research, talk to your onco., ask about metronomics as an option.

Oh I'm so sorry. That news is the hardest to hear, it really does make your world come to a halt doesn't it?

My best advice: remember that Zeke doesn't know what the report says. He just wants you to be happy. He doesn't want you to worry about vet bills and doing treatments that you can't afford. If paying for chemo means that you'll be worried and have to work extra long hours, which takes you away from quality time with him, then you really have to ask yourself if it's worth it. Always remember that chemo is optional; you don't have to do it, especially if it will detract from quality time together.

No matter what you decide, as long as the decision is made with love and Zeke's best interests, that's the best one for your pack. Everyone is different here, and no statistics take into account YOUR dog. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and remember that every day together is a gift.

Here's a list of questions to ask your oncologist.

I hope this helps. I'm so sorry you got the news. You're not alone though, come here anytime and keep us posted.

Zeke had his first round of chemo today and so far so good. I drove an hour there spent three hours at the vet and drove and hour back so we are both pretty tired. As for the spending extra hours to pay for his surgery, I am willing to do it especially sense he  goes to work with me everyday. But I will figure out some way to pay for it. The good or I should say hopeful news is though that the specialist doesn't think its osteosarcoma. She said in her twenty years of working she has never seen osteosarcoma in the joint (which is where it was in his elbow). So we started him on chemo and sent his test slides to MSU to get a special die or something to try and determine for sure what it is. (I am getting real sick of the good news bad news jerking back and forth but I am hopeful) she said it may even be a much less aggressive cancer then osteosarcoma so I am really raying and keeping my fingers crossed.

oh! i keep JUST missing you in the chat room ! I'm in there now if you are around!  Getting a second opinion on the pathology is a good idea if the oncologist things it could be something else.  That was the first thing jill's oncologist wanted done because her tumor was  in her toe, which is extremely unusual for osteosarcoma.  It did indeed turn out to be osteosarcoma, but the oncologist did tell me that the pathologists CAN make mistakes, it does happen.......keep us posted!

Alright Zeke! One rojndof chemo under your doggy belt! Good job!

Yes, this is a real roller coaster ride, that's for sure! Strangely, that becomes more "normal"- I know...rotten! You sre probably pretty emotunaly drained right now. But with surgery being over and Zeke recovering nively, you can start to breathe a little easier

Give sweet Zeke a big hug for us.....and one for you too!

Hang in there- this cancer journey is not for sissies!  You will find strength you didn't know you had because Zeke needs you.  And we are always here to help when you need support or just need to vent.

I hope you get good news on the second opinion- but no matter what happens Zeke is here and is happy right now.

You have such a great attitude! How lucky that Zeke gets to go to work with you. How's he doing today?

We have our paws and tails crossed that it's not osteo!

Hi, just a few quick thoughts.  Things will start to get better.  You will see that regardless of the number of legs he has, Zeke is still Zeke.  He loves you, you love him, and you are doing all you can, and the best you can, to help him.  He will pick up on that; your determination to do the best for him.  Take things each day, or each hour, as you need to, and remember to take care of yourself through this process, too.  Make things easy on you as much as you can so that you can spend time with your beautiful boy.  Keep us posted!
