Ona year ago we adopted a tripawd, front left missing. The question I have is we take him on 20-30 min walks 2 times a day and he seems fine. He is 3 years old. My wife runs and would like to take for a run but we were warned from the shelter it would be better if we didn’t. He lost his leg around two years old from a terrible car accident. The surgeon tried to repair the compound fracture but it didn’t take. They said he had a make shift cast which basically the previous owners duct taped his leg together. We don’t notice any whimpering or whining when he walks. We also give him Dasaquin, one chewey a day to help strengthen his leg. And also how long will the other three legs hold out over time. He does have a great stride when bolts through the backyard chasing out the birds. Thanks

Hi Gary and family, welcome! Your future posts won't need approval so post away. What is your pup's name?

You ask great questions about Tripawd dog fitness and I'm so glad you did! It's so important to know what a Tripawd is and isn't capable of doing during all the stages of life. Some dogs are capable of activities that others are not, it really depends on the breed type, age, and type of activity.

I hate to break it to you but honestly, the shelter is right: any kind of ongoing running is not the best idea, even for a young, fit Tripawd. Especially for a front-leg Tripawd, because they put such incredible force on that one remaining front leg. Sure he can run like the wind now, but if you want his joints to last as long as possible and keep him pain and injury free, you'll want to keep those running activities short and consider investing in a dog stroller so he can still go along for the ride. Pet strollers are so awesome because you can run and still take your dog with you. We got one for our Wyatt when he was a senior but I wish we would have done it years earlier, he could have gone so many more places with us.

We talk a lot about this in our e-book Loving Life On Three Legs , and here are some more articles:

Finally, the best way to find out what your pup can is to take him to a canine rehabilitation therapist so they can evaluate him and create a custom program that will help you help him build strength and endurance. The Tripawds Foundation is so sure this will be helpful that we will even pay for your first rehab visit , so please take advantage of the program! You may also want to invest in the new online exercise program:

I hope this helps!
