The day Rocky came home from his amputation (Feb. 15) I realized he was going to have some trouble navigating the single step out to the back patio. So my dad made him a little ramp. I put a towel over it for some traction . I guess the towel made it comfy, because Rocky liked to lie down on it on the patio.

I only kept the ramp out there for a few weeks. Rocky got comfortable enough navigating the step that I took the ramp down and put it in my garage. I saw it last night and realized I had no use for it anymore, so I put it out on the side of the road for pick up. When I got home tonight, it was gone. Just another one of those little daggers to remind me that our fight really is over.

This was Rocky just a few days after his amputation lying down on the ramp.

A very wise face for a very wise boy! I love his little Pom Pom on his leg where he was shavedlaughing That’s a great picture David!

One little step at a time Dad! Each little item that you tuck away is going to hurt just the same...what-ever but always remember that this kind of pain is good, you loved him that much right!heart

Were loving these little updates, I’m still getting to know Rocky through you and he seems like a true gem!

Until next time, all the very best and lots of hugs coming your way!

A couple of small steps tonight, one month to the day that he went to the Bridge.

I ate dinner at the house - without Rocky at my side - for the first time since, I'm pretty sure, September 2009 ... i.e. before I got Rocky. I had eaten out or at my parents every night since he went to the Bridge.

There's a chicken place here called Tenders. I got food there a bunch the last six weeks or so of Rocky's life. Since he knew it was food for me, I could hide his chemo in a tender and get him to eat it. His last meal was three tenders from there. I hadn't gone back since. You know how if you eat somewhere and get sick, you don't want to eat there again? It felt like that, knowing that's where his last meal came from. But I went there tonight to get some tenders to bring home.

He also left me another penny today. So far, that's been exactly one for each week he's been gone.

Exactly.

A few days after my last dog, Nick, died, I went out with a friend for drinks. I remember her telling me she'd never own another dog because "it hurts too damn much" to lose them.

I thought about it for a minute and said "yeah, but this pain lets me know his life was worth it."

As much as this hurts, it's all worth it. I'll take this every time if it means having something as wonderful as Rocky in my life.

Good for you David! You may think you’re taking baby steps, but actually you are moving forward in leaps and bounds! You even ‘sound’ a lot lighter! winker It’s actually hard to believe that it’s already been a month! It must seem like an eternity to you!

Its funny that you should talk of Rocky’s last meal... I remember with my Mojo, his last treat was the lick stick for cats, (it’s just Brewers yeast) and to this day, I haven’t had the heart to give it to any of my other cats! (It’s been 4 years David, so look who hasn’t moved on...?!😉)

And yet another penny?!oh-my So cool! See, it’s Rocky’s way of telling you that you are rich in love! Put it in the bank of your heart and pass it on to the next love of your life!aw-shucks

Yeah, the pain is well worth it Pal, I completely agree! There will never be a time in my life that I don’t have fur babies! It’s just in me to share my heart with them! Until I met all of you in this Tripawds community, I loved animals more than people!rasberry

Keep your chin up and keep feeling.... ❤️❤️❤️ Until next time.

Rocky and his pennies....he makes me smile the way he likes to dole out his monies to you  on a weekly basis.

And that photo of Rocky in the step is such a sweet example of hiw much you did for him, and how uch he clearly appreciated it!

Now it seems to be as though it's his way of telling you to take things "one step at a time Dad".   One step at a time is the only way.

Having had Rocky by your side as your supper companion for all those years, and now not, has to be really hard.   It's wonderful that you have such caring parents who understand the depth of your love for Rocky.   While the Tenders are kind of a vittersweet memory for you, you jave to remewthat fromRocky's persr, they are  a very happy memory that he brags about with all his Bridge buddies!!   Pretty sure he left you that penny today to help defray the most of all those Tenders!!  Such a thoughtful boy!

So a question for you.   My Happy Hannah loved being by my side and loved it when I talked to her.  But she woukd leave my side in a split second if I so much as dropped a crumb on the floor!     Would Rocky chose veing by your side or go for the Tender crumb if you dropped it on the floor?

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Geez!  It takes me so long to type, you two jave two more posts while I'm typoing!!

Yeah, if someone said they woukd take our grief away instantly, would you donit even if it meant you never had your dognor cat in your life!!!!    As much as it hurts, if it meant that was the only way we would have them in our lives, we'd do it over in a heartbeat!

And to this day, I still do hzve a little chuckle thinking how happy Happy Hannah was with her "celebration" meal that included a scoopmof deer poop!!   And I searched for just the right pile that I knew she woukd devour with glee!  She was such a connoisseur!

😂 “Typoing” that’s brilliant Sally! clap😂 your typing reminds me of those written tests where they make you read a line even though all the words are all screwed up... you typo perfectly, ‘cause we can all understand every word you’re saying! 😂

Mmmmmmm  🦌 💩 ! It’s no wonder Hannah was Happy! Bless her big heart! My Abbey girl, who was a 120lb Great Pyranese, used to love to roll in both the 🦌 💩 and 🐻 💩! Imagine that clean up...!ugh 😝

❤️  🤗 😘

I don't know about leaps and bounds. I'm still really restless and full of anxiety. But I'm making progress. I think. And it's still weird. Each of the last 30 days have taken forever. But the month has flown by.

Good question! I guess it depends on your definition.

I usually eat upstairs with my food on a low coffee table or sitting on my bedroom floor (yeah, I'm weird). Point being, my food was always within easy range of Rocky. And yet, he was always a total gentleman. He'd never take my food unless it was clear I was giving it to him (which happened often). I could leave my food and walk out of the room and more often than not, he'd follow me. But even if he didn't follow, he wouldn't touch my food.

That said, if I happened to drop something, he considered that me giving it to him and it was gone in a split second.

OMD!   You could leave the room and Rocky would follow you rather than gulp down the food the second yiu got out of sight?  Nkw that's a bond!! 🙂

Frankie will actually try and sneak food off my plate whike I'm eating!  Merry Myrtle just sits in front of me and STARES....non-stop staring!  I don't even think she blinks!  And she DROOLS!!!   Big puddles of drool!

And pretty Abbey rolling in the poopicon_png just loving the smell!!  Ugh!

Rocky would stare at my food and then look at me like "you gonna give me some or what?" But he'd never try to take any. He was so incredibly mild-mannered.

He liked to roll in poop too. And sometimes eat it. I brought him in one time and he carried in a piece of dried-up poop with him. Yuck.

Last night was pretty good, but just before I went to bed I went to look at his online patient portal his vet had for him. I hadn't looked at it in months. They updated it to where it's just his profile pic with "crossed the rainbow bridge." Yeah, seeing that was hard. I cried like a baby.

Rocky was such a good boy! A little poop rollin? No biggie when you have a dog with good manners right?

I think if I had logged on and saw the vet portal I'd take it pretty hard too. Little things are HUGE when we grieve. It was a long time until I could watch certain videos or look at certain photos of Jerry and not have a meltdown. All those tears were medicinal I guess, because eventually I did enjoy them again.

Yes, it does really suck David and it is probably going to suck for some time to come. You’ll may not get ‘over’ Rocky’s passing, but you will feel better when you are able to move on... you’re not quite ready to do that... grief is a process David, keep moving forward sweetheart!

sending hugs and healing thoughts
