Hi my beautiful cat peewee has only today had her left hind leg removed after a very severe break to her femur. I pick her up in the morning. I have set a big cage in the house (outdoor farm cat) with bed, a low level kitty litter, carpet wall for scratching, water, food... is there anything in particular that will help keep her comfortable that anyone can suggest? Thanks 🙂
Hi Beth, welcome! Sorry about Peewee's accident but she's on the road to recovery now so yay!
Sounds like she has been an outdoor kitty? That may be a bit of a challenge during her recovery, but you are making very good progress getting her recovery room ready. Good job 🙂 Our Tripawds Recovery Shopping List has many ideas for an easier recuperation, as well as our Tripawd Cat book, Cool Tips for Tripawd Cats.
The biggest issue we see here is a lack of pain management when new amputee animals come home. Have you talked to your vet about what kind of pain meds she has and will be given when she comes home? Without enough, it can make life very hard for both of you. So be sure to have a talk with your vet before she comes home, and advocate for enough pain medication. For most cats this means an anti-inflammatory (Onsior or robenacoxib), a nerve pain reducer (Gabapentin) and a 3-day injectable pain medication called Nocita. All three combined will address different pain pathways that help cats stay comfortable during recovery.
We've written about post op pain control a few times, so here are some good articles with our best pain management tips for cats:

Thank you so much. I will definitely be having that conversation with my vet when we pick her up today. Its been such a shock and all happened so quickly thank goodness for this site. I'll be reading those links Jerry!
We had actually thought she had passed away I'd been searching all our sheds for nearly a week trying to find her. Then up she popped when we pulled in one night. so this outcome is so much better. A big adjustment for her though. Luckily she has always been part inside cat when she felt like it. She is only 5 so a lot of life ahead of her just want to make it a quality one.
