4 months isn't too early to start training- you just have to keep the sessions short, fun, and with lots of treats and lots and lots of praise. One thing I do with Elly because she is so sensitive is that we always, always, always end training on a happy, positive note.  For her that sometimes means we do a couple easy tricks or obedience tasks- something as simple as a sit!

How is Totem doing with any fear issues from the attack?  Elly was hit by a car and so was afraid of cars and engine noises when I got her.  Lots of work to get her over that, now she only gets nervous around really loud trucks or motorcycles but that doesn't even happen every time anymore.

Elly is quite obedient now and I even trust her off leash in certain places but we have been working on her training for almost 5 years.  I still don't trust her anywhere there might be cats though.  She was literally afraid of leaves blowing down the street when I first adopted her but she becomes a fearless beast when she sees a cat!  We have been working hard on that over the last year, she will still start after one but usually stops when I tell her to 'leave it'.

Thanks Karen.  Totem has not had the opportunity to be around another dog since the incident. He does seem a little more cautious when we walk on our country road.  So far I have always turned right, the opposite direction from the attack dogs house.  We have walked a short distance to the left and he didn't seem to be concerned.  When he gets with friendly dogs (at least before) he goes nuts so I'm still trying to protect him from rough play.

I have noticed something that seems odd to me.  He now seems able to literally stretch is remaining hind leg straight out behind him without pain.  It looks scary to me but doesn't seem to bother him.  He will sometimes pee like that...squat down so that his hind leg is straight out behind him.  He never did that with 2 legs.

Here's Totem!

Robyn, this was the best I could do with the image. It's a really small file (usually it's the opposite when people send pics, they're huge!). But I still see his adorable self shining through. He's taller than I imagined, look at those long legs!

Elly will often stretch her one back leg out behind her, it does look a little weird but I think it's a good stretch for her. She does not do it when peeing however...

Did he have a preferred leg he lifted when he peed or did he pee in a squat before? Some boy dogs take a while to figure out their new pee stance, especially if they always lifted one particular leg.  My quad Pug boy will only pee when he lifts his right leg. Even if he pees in a squat he will lift his right foot off the ground.

I'm glad he seems OK on your short walks so far!
