Hello everyone!

I can't believe 2 weeks ago that Sally posted those videos of Vaughn running and happy and now he is having lots of pain.

It started about 8 days ago.   I noticed he was making a little whimper when he would get up or lay down.  Especially on the amputated side.  Now it is has progressed to LOTS of crying when he gets up or lays down.  He is fine once he is up and walking.   We think it is his neck.

He has been to several vets and the rehab techs but I wanted to see if this sounds like anything anyone's dog has gone through.  Could it be phantom pain ?  I  also just read another post and they talked about Amantadine.  Should I try that?

WE upped his gabapentin and he was still on Rimadly but after they gave him a dexamethasone shot and it did help for only 24 hours we now weened him over to prednisone.  Today was the first day so I am not sure if it is helping yet.   We also added a muscle relaxer.

I would love to find out about the Amantadine!

Thank you all !!

Love Pam and Vaughn

Pam I'm so sorry! Sounds like he tweaked a muscle in his neck or shoulders, which wouldn't be uncommon.

It sounds like he saw his therapist? Great move! What do they think is going on? The pain control sounds reasonable.

Generally phantom pain presents differently, with sudden cries of pain that seek to come from out of the blue. Amantadine is generally used to treat different pain pathways but not inflammatory like this sounds like. You could certainly ask. Do they have him on Methocarbomol for the muscle relaxer?

Hi Pam, so sorry Vaughn is dealing with this. Did this happen after chiro or acupuncture? It does seem like it could be something pinched in his neck area...hopefully that is the easy answer to this. Keeping you in my prayers, hoping you get some answers. Hang in there

Hi Pam,

I am so sorry to hear Vaughn is having difficulties.  I am just throwing this idea out but not sure if it could apply or not.  My oldest Rottie Jasmine starting having what I thought was back issues right before her chiropractic visit.  We went a head and did an adjustment & acupuncture on her (in August was when this happened) she seemed ok the next day she couldn't hardly walk and could not do steps started what I called screaming.  We took her back to her vet it continued to get worse.  We took her back to her chiro vet thinking she needed another adjustment or something was pinches.  Did not need the adjustment did another acupuncture treatment.  It continued to get worse she couldn't walk or lay down.  Screamed when she got up.

Her normal vets put her on prednisone then she ended up with bloody diarrhea which landed her in the clinic 4 days with fluids and on 3rd day they did a pancreatitis test.  Which came back positive.  We treated her for that and she was fine.  I was told that sometimes that presents as back problems.  I am not sure this is the case with Vaughn but throwing this out as an idea?? Maybe have them test him for that?  Pancreatitis is very painful (even in humans).

Just a thought

The therapist thinks its his neck too.  Yes he is on Methocarbamol muscle relaxer.

Michelle thanks for the suggestion.   Vaughns seems to be in his neck.  Plus he just had blood work and I would think something would be off if he had pancreatitis.   I can ask though
