Here we are again with news that I'd rather I didn't have to share . . .  I'm actually at work right now, but am feeling pretty blue and just needed to connect with the Tripawds community again.

After a few small nodules were discovered on my Silly Sheepdog Sylvie's lungs at the beginning of August, we've entered and are making our way through the world of metronomics and now more heavy-duty oral chemo drugs.  We started with a combination of Piroxicam and Cytophosphomide for a couple of weeks, then on to Piroxicam/Cytophosphomide alternating with Palladia since the end of August.  Yesterday I took her back to her oncologist for more x-rays and a check-up.  This time, instead of the doc coming out to have me come back for a look at the radiographs first, then bringing Sylvia out to the lobby, the vet tech brought out Sylvie first and told me the doctor would be coming out to talk with me in a few.  "Wow!" I thought.  Must be no change since the last check about a month ago!  Nope.  Just a different vet tech, doing things differently.

This time Dr. Valerius showed me the x-ray film and pointed out that one of the mets was the same size as a month ago, but another had enlarged fairly significantly.  Still looked to be about fingernail-sized, but growing, nonetheless.  For the first time she sounded a bit discouraged.  Damn!  How could such a lively, rambunctous dog with energy and appetite, but no cough or major panting be getting sicker?!!?

The oncologist was divided on whether to continue with the current chemotherapy or go with something else, but given the comparatively rapid progression of the nodule, leaned toward something new.  I don't have the info. here at work, but the drug name starts with an "L", and is only given once every three weeks.  We started it yesterday, as soon as we got home from the vet.  We're also on SAMe, and staying with the Piroxicam, Pepcid and Gabapentin.

Will continue shortly . . .

Sweet Silly Sylvie, the Old English Sheepdog

Diagnosed with osteosarcoma 11/04/2010 at almost 7 years of age * Left hind leg amputated 11/09/2010 * Chemo on 12/10, 12/17, 01/10, 01/31

Sweet Sylvie's earthly journey ended on Nov. 3, 2011, one day short of a year since her diagnosis and 6 days short of her one-year ampuversary.  Her family celebrates her life as a sheepdog – ever the puppy, ever silly, ever sweet – and are grateful for our 7 years together.

We're sorry to hear about Sylvia's lung mets progressing, but is by no means a death sentence. As Jerry's oncologist explained to us, dogs can live with much less lung capacity than humans. In fact, Jerry remained a happy healthy dog – although tiring more easily – until the mets had consumed one entire lung and 60% of the other.

We started him on K9 Immunity at the same time as his metronomics after discovering the mets. X-rays after three months confirmed "stable disease" with no further growth, and he survived another 8 months.

Please give Silvie a good belly rub for us and keep us posted. Thanks for the update!

Stupid lung mets. I'm sorry to hear they are progressing. I've not heard of an alternative drug that starts w/ an L; would be interested to hear more when you have the info in front of you. I fear we'll hear similar news next month when Abby gets her follow up xray. But - I'm hanging onto that "dogs can live a long time with lung mets" hope. I hope the new treatment slows - or just plain stomps on - those stupid lung mets.

As for Sylvie being happy and rambunctious, so is Abby. At her last appointment her onc. listened to her heart and lungs for a long time. He said if we didn't have the xrays to show the lung mets are in there, he would never know. She is still a happy girl. Sounds like Sylvie is too. Hang on to that. Sounds like there are still lots of good days ahead for her.

All the best,
Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Thank you, Jackie and Admin. for the quick responses!  I had to move to another computer, then got tied up with work (gee - seems to happen that way when you're at work!!)

I had no idea that a dog could live so long as Jerry after such a take-over by lung mets - fantastic!  And, Abby and Sylvia seem to be "cut from the same cloth".  All of Sylvie's functions, like Abby's (heart, lungs, temperature, etc., etc.) are still perfectly normal.  Even her bloodwork, so far.

My husband and I are committed to making our silly, sweet Sheepdog Sylvie's life really good as long as possible.  We're gonna keep playing and going for walks . . . A couple of weeks ago we even took her to a dog park (one out in the country where we probably wouldn't see other dogs - I don't want her to get hurt being rambunctious with dogs she doesn't know) with our other dogs, Banjo and Charlie, and the three ran and ran and ran some more.  Granted, Sylvia ran out of steam first, but then again, she always has and now she's running on three legs instead of four.

One thing I am finally REALLY gonna do when I get home today is to get back to Sylvia's blog and get caught up and especially post more pics.  I want a wonderful record of her life as long as it continues!

I'm sorry Sylvia's cancer seems to be progressing.

But it sounds like you have a good attitude- and all Sylvia knows is that life is good!

So stay as positive and optimistic as you can; plan on having Sylvia's silliness entertain you for a long time to come!!

I'm sorry to hear about Sylvie's mets progressing but I hope they slow down - or better yet, just stop right here!

Sylvie is still sweet and super and we're looking forward to more pics.

I would love to see more pics of Sylvia too.  I don't have much to add, other than she is still right here with us, so love her with all that you have.  I have heard many of the dogs with mets go on and have happy lives for quite some time.  We hope and pray you get that with her!
