Hello!

Bella, my 8 year old Cane Corso, is having her right rear leg amputated this Friday. She has had a limp that has gotten progressively worse for the past three weeks, and found out on Monday that it is osteocarcinoma. She is still so active and happy that we have decided on moving forward with amputation rather than putting her to sleep or letting this progress and have her suffer a pathological fracture.  We are all anxious about the process.

What are some good tips for post operative care at home?

Hi Bella and Sophie, welcome. I'm so sorry you had to join our club but glad you found us, and that she's having the surgery this week. Pretty remarkable that it's happening with everything that's going on in the world, and I'm so glad that wonderful vets like yours are selflessly helping pets at a time like this.

Of course you are anxious! It's a scary time and while it feels like there are many unknowns, I can tell you that since 2006 we've seen quite a few giant breed dogs join us and the vast majority do very well on three legs. Recovery can be a bit slower for gentle giants but with patience and good pain management , you'll see her sparkle come back before you know it.

For now I'll refer you to our What to Expect article series, which has a lot of post-op pointers. Jerry's Required Reading List also has lots of articles you can reference, and our e-books library does too. Stay tuned for more feedback from the community and throw whatever questions you have at us, we are here to help.

{P.S. do you mean "osteosarcoma" as the cancer type?}
