Hi all,

My name is Claudia, and my sweet dog Sophie (10 years old) was diagnosed with OSA in her left hind leg. After her amputation procedure 2 months ago (went well), she proceeded with carboplatin chemo treatment. The plan was 6 treatments ( every 3 weeks). About a week ago, she had her second treatment. And unfortunately she had a really bad reaction. First she stopped eating, then a few days later diarrhea and vomiting. She been medicated for nausea and diarrhea.. and possible gastritis due to chemo. She's still on recovery mode. Eating very little, lost weight. I'm devastated. And reconsidering not doing future chemo. Did this happen to any of you? Thanks in advance.

Hi Claudia and Sophie, welcome. We are so glad you joined us but sorry you needed to.

It's so ruff when a dog has a chemotherapy reaction. It's not really common but it does happen and usually it's very temporary. The oncologist will dial down the next chemo session to ensure it doesn't happen again, if you decide to keep going. Usually all it takes is one reaction for everyone to figure out a dosing that will work next time around.

How long ago did the symptoms start? And what did the vet prescribe to help? If you haven't received an appetite stimulant like Entyce, and an anti-nausea medication like Cerenia, now's the time to get one. You can help her diarrhea clear up with edible green clay , it works wonders to stop runny poop.

So sorry your sweet pup is having a rough time.  We all do this journey with quality as the number one goal, so I know you are having a rough time processing this.

Please know that there are no guarantees with chemo ine way or another,,okay? I'm  giving you a link to BIG LOUIE,  a really big Neapolitan  Mastiff who stopped chemo after the seond treatmenr.  He also had pretty severe  side effects.  It was a different  kind of chemo, but side effects the same as your Sophie.  Called adriamycin (something like that).

Anyway, Lou bounced back after stopping chemo and went on to enjoy a happy joyful life for almost two years!

Keep us posted, okay?

Here's the link.  https://sreusch.....for-louie/

PS....ask your Onco about a dose of fluids to help turn Sophie around.  Fluids can do wonders

Thank you guys! Big Loui's story is very similar to Sophie's. She also had a "small reaction" on her first chemo treatment, but was able to rebound in a day or 2.. this time around it's been 11 days! She lost a lot of weight. Been hand feeding her a little bit at the time. Today, after 11 days I see a light at the end of the tunnel. She ate on her own and is a little more alert. Talked to 2 vets, local vet and oncologist vet ( Dr. Ogalvie). They both agree that this was too much for her. She was too sensitive to the chemo. To answer your question Jerry, she was on 2 types of anti-nausea, Cerenia was one of them. Since her OSA has a slow mitosis rate, I think I'll stop further chemo, and pray for the best.

For whatever it's worth, and I really try hard not to inject my own personal opinion on the site, but I would do the same!  Especi because  I've been on here long enough to know that some dogs live a long time without chemo, and some do not.  Some live a long time with chemo, and some do not.  So for me, it's basically a crap shoot.

I'm really glad you've gotten the professional validation that you needed to not proceed. We all go into this journey focused on quality and, yes, longevity would be a great plus. But longevity without quality is nothing.

I'm really glad seeing Big Lou's story helped you. And just to give you another little boost, a dog named Clyde just recently celebrated his 2-year ampuversary with no chemo😎

I am soooo thrilled you are seeing Sophie's Sparkle start to come back! It will continue to get brighter and brighter now and that is called quality! And, as an aside, I can guarantee you that Sophie agrees with your decision! She is paying free and able to be Sophie again😊

And you can still do nutritional  supplements, holistic options, etc.  Checkmout K9 Immunity in our Nutritional section.  I gave them to Happy Hannah.

Now, we must have pictures of Sophie. Here is a link for adding images .  adding imaages.  Looking forward to them!

Thank you for you candid reply Benny55! It's been a difficult journey for Sophie and myself. But I hope things will be better from now on. You're right, I don't want "longevity with no quality of life". This cancer will take her regardless, and I just want her to be ok with the time we have left. I told myself I would try chemo, as long as she can handle. She didn't. At least 2 treatments is better than nothing, right?

I'll post pics. May we all be safe!
