I'm glad you got the chemo issues under control given how serious the last one was. I wouldn't go back to chemo either in that situation. I didn't know he had that problem until reading these posts just now. There have been some dogs who had really bad experiences with chemo, and I think doxy in particular, but I think they have blogged more than they have 'forumed'. I believe it was young Big Barney's parents, who blogged about his very unfortunate experiences with doxy, which sadly got the best of him.

Was all of Maxx's treatment done at CSU?

Let us know what they suggest tomorrow. By the way tazziedog once mentioned a St Bernard who had a large number of SQ mets (something like 24) for about 8 months or more, and they never seemed to bother him. I guess my Tazzie was just unlucky with how fast the darn thing grew. Seeing Maxx's pyrenees face makes me think a bit of Tazzie is in him.

Hi, Maxx's mom and Tazzie (what a beautiful smile!).

Benny just recently finished his 6th and final round of carboplatin. He generally tolerated it well. We had to watch what he ate for a day or so afterwards to avoid upchucks or intestinal issues. His chemo site was apparently painful - a couple of times when we went to remove his bandage, he actually nipped at us - and he is not a nipper/biter. We learned to wait until the next morning to remove the bandage! From his behavior, it seems he felt a bit puny for a week or so afterwards.

We do some alternative stuff with Benny - he gets cancer-fighting supplements like luteolin, artemisinin , and Teavigo (decaffeinated green tea extract). He was also getting curcumin, but it seemed to cause some intestinal upset. We just obtained some Apocaps , which are specifically designed as a dog cancer supplement.

Continued best wishes to Maxx for his full recovery!

Can you tell me what % of the bone still has to be good to qualify for SRS?  My 9 year old English mastiff (not a good candidate for amputation) just had his Cat Scan two days ago and the doc won't be in until Monday and I can't go thru the weekend not knowing.  I called and the tech said he had ~50% bone left.  Does anyone know if he would qualify or do I have to wait???

Any advice, suggestions or assistance is greatly appreciated.

Oh, and he was diagnosed with megaesophagus about a month ago so being under anesthesia is even more dangerous which also made SRS appealing (his OSA is in his front leg/ankle and has not spread - thankfully)

Hi Stephany and Bubbs, thanks for posting. Please consider registering as a member so your future posts won't require approval.

Meanwhile, I hate to say it but not being vets here, we can't give you an answer that's any better than the one that came from your veterinary tech. It really depends on the state of the tumor from what I understand. Sorry, I wish I could help.

One suggestion: if you are at all uncertain about what vets are recommending, the best thing you can do is get another opinion from a specialist. Even if it comes out identical to the first, at least you can feel better about whatever you decide.

I'm really glad to hear that the cancer hasn't spread!
