Hi, I haven't yet learned how to post to the proper forum.  My 8 year old Lab has been diagnosed with chondrosarcoma in the right rear leg, no mets, level 1.  I know that I'm on the "tripawds" blog, but did any of you who had a diagnosis of chondrosarcoma receive an alternative treatment recommendation of definitive radiation?

Sure you have, just be sure to: 1. Log in so your posts appear immediately without requiring moderation, and 2. Start a new topic so members can specifically adress your concerns without hijacking someone else's topic. The latter is why we moved your post here to its own topic in the Treatment and Recovery forum.

We weren't given a radiation treatment option for Jerry, so hopefully others can chime in with better feedback. But did you search for radiation and chondrosarcoma mentioned in existing forum topics or the Tripawds News blog ? This posts may also be of interest...

Hi, thanks, I think I did it correctly this time.  (Not much of a blogger/poster).  I did search chondrosarcoma and radiation, both here and elsewhere.  Not a lot of info.  I am guessing that there may be one or more reasons for this:  a) I've read that radiation has gotten better in the past few years and they are able to give higher doses, so it is recommended more frequently than in the past; b) we are at a teaching hospital (Animal Medical Center in NYC) that has a certified radiation oncologist, so that may account for us having been offered the alternative; and c) he has no pain whatsoever, visible to us, the dogwalker, the puppy he plays with or any of his doctors.

After reading some of the posts, I am now interested in learning about anyone who had a diagnosis of chondrosarcoma that actually turned out to be something else.  I have seen a few of those posts.  I asked this question of my doctors - "how sure are we that it is a chondrosarcoma and not an osteosarcoma"? and they said they were sure, but the posts have given me some concern.

No matter what choice we make now, there is strong chance he will be a tripawd in the near or distant future, so I'm glad to have found this site.  It was in the information provided to us by AMC, by the way.

i just posted in another topic of yours, but we were told probably chondrosarcoma and it turned out to be osteosarcoma. The x-ray showed the tumor originating in the ulna...osteosarcoma in the forelimb is almost always in the radius.  The x-ray showed the tumor to be affecting the neighboring bone...osteosarcoma will never jump to a neighboring bone.  The tumor was partially hard and partially squishy...can't explain that one ugh  Everything was pointing to chondrosarcoma, so imagine our surprise when the pathology report came back confirming a high-grad highly-active osteosarcoma tumor.  We were shocked and I was sure this meant imminent death for my snuggle bear.  But here we are over a year later, he's not showing any signs of slowing down yet, and I'm thinking of removing another leg to make him stop jumping up walls and on people.  The diagnosis isn't important, but rather the fact that our dogs are given the best life we are able to provide for them.  As long as they get their food, their love, and their treats, they don't care whether they have chondrosarcoma, osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, blah-ba-dee-blahsarcoma, or any other other disease with the combination of sarc and oma in the name.  You're in the hardest part right now...the waiting.  It sucks.  It WILL get easier though, so keep your chin up wink
