Hello everyone, we're in need of some advise...We brought our 7 yr old pit/lab mix home from complete right forequarter amputation Friday Jan 28th. It's now Sunday January 29th and since bringing him home on 4 different occasions he has cried a screaming yelp when doing everyday things like coughing after a little too much water or a burp after pills, our doctor is unsure what might be causing this. Aside from this he doesn't want to take regular trips outside or drink water without being hand fed, almost like depression since the stronger pain meds wore off. The incision site looks good with only a little redness. Has anyone else experienced these symptons? Any advise would be much appreciated. Thank you.

My dog Rebel could be Toby's twin brother, same age, same breed, same operation just one week earlier. Rebel had all the same symptom you described, he is just starting to smile again. The pains are phantom pains, he gets them less often as time goes on, he shakes like he's scared and I rub his chest and tell him it will go away soon and he slowly comes out of it. He is eating more, but we still have to get him up and make him go for walks which makes him happy after he is done. He is off all medications and the phantom pains are the only thing that bothers him. He is slowly coming back to us, he seemed so depressed it killed us.  Going to chemo doctor monday feb 8th -

We're glad to hear Rebel is recuperating well. Why not start a new topic or a blog to share his story? I'm sure Tripawds members would love to hear about him.

Thank you so much for posting your experience!! Our dog Milkshake had her front left leg amputated on Thursday (the 27th) and we brought her home on Sat. Her front arm had been shattered (we'll never know how)since December and after several surgeries, pins, plates, infections, and re-breaks we decided to amputate.

Starting Sunday Milkshake began letting out these screaming yelps while lying down - one session lasted as long as 30 seconds. Each time she jumps up and runs for me and tries to climb up on me so that she can be held (she's 60 lbs)... I called the emergency clinic that did the surgery to be told that she "may be attention seeking."

Yeah, I won't comment on that further... Anyway, the sounds are gut renching - similar to an animal being severely harmed. Today we took her to the local vet and she was taken off tramadol and given a fentanyl patch. She's completely out of it right now and we haven't heard even a yelp since.

Has your dog stopped the screaming yelps? Did the staple removal help ease her pain? I know we're only 4 days post-op, but this is a really awful time. I guess I'm hoping to find a timeline on here - 2 weeks seems to keep coming up as a moving forward time. After 12 weeks of this, I'm ready for her to get better!!

Every dog is different, so there's no one "timeline" to follow. Milkshake is still very early in her recovery process, so her yelps may be side effects from the meds, or phantom pain (see previous links). Try to take things one day at a time, and as much as you don't want to hear about "attention seeking" we recommend that you don't react in such a way that rewards her outbursts. We hope Milkshake will be feeling better soon. Please feel free to start a new topic or a blog to keep us all posted.

My baby just had his left forelimb amputated on the 27th, and since bringing him home he has been screaming and yelping to the point where he arches his back and falls over; luckily I am there to catch him. It only happens after he gets up from lying down, calling the vet in the a.m. It just pains me to see him in so much pain and not know what to do sad. He is on 375mg Clavamox, 100mg Rimadyl and Tramadol 50mg.

I wish I had a suggestion for you.  All I can say is I'm really sorry.  The first week was pretty rough for us too.  It will get easier.  I remember looking so forward to the adjustment period being a distant memory, albeit a painful one.  Before you know it, it is.  I hope today is a better day for you both.  My heart goes out to you and your baby.

wow, welcome lycan.  that yelping doesn't seem right, i think we'd be off the the vet to check it out...everyone is different, but when gayle came home after her amp, her tramodal was prescribed to the point that we didn't have but one event of yelping (that was my fault trying to help her set up, when she was really doing ok on her own...).  let us know what you find out!!  great picture, by the way!

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included).  She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

Welcome to the family. As others have already said, sounds like phantom pain , Gus had it about 5 days after surgery and it lasted for about 4 weeks, with the last ones being more like loud whimpers, but they do tear your heart out. He was on Gabapentin and rimidyl, the spells didn't last very long but at 3:30 in the morning pretty much set ya' straight up in bed. Good luck, this is the best place to be, don't be afraid to ask anything, experience gives the best answers, Gus and Dan

My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010

Sorry to hear your pup is having a ruff start to his recovery. Is Clavamx a narcotic? Haven't heard of that medication, and many dogs have adverse affects from drugs that they can't handle as well as the pain. Sounds severe though, I do suggest contacting your vet and hope they have suggestions.

Phantom pain does indeed present itself with sudden outbursts. Be sure to review these tips for managing phantom pain in dogs, and consider using a hot/cold pain relief compress to assist with healing and pain management .

Keep in mind that it is still very early in his recovery, we hope things start loking up soon! Please consider starting a new topic to discuss his issues. (We assume he has a name?) FYI: If you register, your posts will appear immediately without requiring moderation.

Clavamox is an antibiotic.  Trouble has taken it many times during allergy breakouts.

His name is Lycan. The vet said that it may be phantom pain and from a rise in blood pressure when he gets up from lying down; since he seems to only experience severe pain when rising. I should keep an eye on swelling and redness, and take him back if it continues. I've also been ice packing the site for 20-30min 3 times a day, moving to heat tomorrow. Thanks for info.

Sorry to hear about that reaction.  It's so hard to know what to do since dogs are very cryptic, and very tough, about their pain.  I found myself very confused for the first two weeks, and did take Bauer back for one night at the vet that turned out to be observation.  It has gotten MUCH better though (3 weeks tomorrow), so hang in there.

Poor Lycan!  I'm glad your vet figured it out.  I can't handle screaming!

Lycan, you are a cutie.  What kind of dog are you?  You look small.  You should start a brand new topic and tell us about yourself  – so we can make a formal meet and greet!  You may want to consider a blog, too.  It will help in your recovery – mentally.
