Hello everyone, we're in need of some advise...We brought our 7 yr old pit/lab mix home from complete right forequarter amputation Friday Jan 28th. It's now Sunday January 29th and since bringing him home on 4 different occasions he has cried a screaming yelp when doing everyday things like coughing after a little too much water or a burp after pills, our doctor is unsure what might be causing this. Aside from this he doesn't want to take regular trips outside or drink water without being hand fed, almost like depression since the stronger pain meds wore off. The incision site looks good with only a little redness. Has anyone else experienced these symptons? Any advise would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I don't have any experience with the yelping, but it isn't uncommon according to some of the other topics I've read here.  We commonly refer to the first two weeks as recovery hell.  They just aren't themselves.  Some don't want to move about at all, some aren't interested in food, some sleep for hours and hours a day.  At the end of about 2 weeks, they begin to act like the dog you used to know. Hopefully someone will jump in shortly and talk about their experience with yelping.

Healing thoughts for your fur child, and calming thoughts for you.  Please check back often and update us on the status.

Thanks for the advise and kind words. We hope to hear soon as we just experienced another screaming yelp when he tried to speak. Keeping our finger crossed that he's not in too much pain!

I'm not sure this will help you at all, but Harley would intermittently let out a yelp, which we assume to be Phantom Limb Pain. He was put on gabapentin, which has stopped the yelping (we recently stopped the gabapentin, yelping returned, so we’re back on it). When Harley yelped, he’d jump up and usually whip his head around to where his leg was, and then typically come over for a hug or attention. He also used to lick where his leg should have been. Since being put on gabapentin, I notice he will still at times “jump” or "startle", but he doesn’t yelp anymore and doesn’t seek attention after it happens … and it happens pretty rarely now.

So, I’m not sure this helps you out. But for us, we’re pretty sure Harley’s “yelps” are Phantom Limb Pain.

Like previously posted, the first two weeks can be hell. We, of course, don’t want our babies in pain, but it can take a couple weeks for them to start acting like their old selves. Hang in there, it does get better and easier!!

Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.

We experienced screaming yelps 2 weeks after Oslo's amputation.  It started with a few yelps a day, all out of nowhere, then a few yelps per hour, then the yelps were louder and a lot more frequent  That's when I  freaked out and finally decided to put my shyness aside and I started to post here.  It broke my heart to think that Oslo was in such pain.    But was it pain (phantom pain ) ?  It was a sudden yelp, out of nowhere at anytime of the day.  Sometimes, he would even yelp while yawning...it was very confusing . Our issue has been solved by the use of Gabapentin. I can not say that your dog have the exact same problem that Oslo had, but I thought it could help you to know what happened to us.

Good luck and please keep us updated.

I don't have any experience with yelping following amputation but when I read your post I immediately thought of phantom pain .  It seems that others have posted similar stories.  Please ask your vet about gabepentin.  Good luck.  What is your dog's name?

along with others, we also have experience with that horrible yelping thing (i call it screaming and it scares the crap outta me!!).  3 days after surgery Jack woke us up in the middle of the night screeching, and the next day he was perscribed gabapentin.  I haven't heard the sound since.  Good luck!!

Hi Toby, thank you for joining us here. We're so sorry you're not feeling good but from what your pawrents describe it sure sounds like phantom pain , especially because it hasn't been very long since the surgery. There's been lots written about it, here are just a few links that we found by searching for the "phantom pain " tags:

Phantom Pain

Sudden Pain at Amputation Spot

Tremor and spasm

Post amputation pain

Restlessness at night – anyone else?

2+ Months Post Op, Body Twitches…pain?

Two days past surgery is not very long at all. We aren't vets but your symptoms sound pretty much like a lot of us did in the first few weeks. Part of it has to do with the pain meds working their way out of our system. And sometimes pain meds just make us all nuts. Once you get off of them you'll see that things will pick up and you'll feel better. Also, poor appetite is usually just a result of all of the trauma we went through with surgery.

Keep talking to your vet though, and let them know if anything is making your pawrents worried.  Also, check out our "Top Questions" topic to see what else you might be able to expect:

Hey so what's your story? How come you're a Tripawd now?

Welcome to our little family. Let us know how you're doing OK? Hang in there!

Looks like you've gotten lots of great input already.  Seems like what most of us believe to be phantom limb pain does vary quite a bit in how it presents itself.  My Yoda definitely had yelps.  Very scary, I know.  In retrospect, it probably would have saved me a lot of stress if I had gotten him some gabapentin, so good luck with that!  Some vets are resistent, not believing dogs experience phantom limb pain, but I have yet to hear a good reason for them not to be in favor of at least trying it.

For Yoda, he would be lying down, I'd hear him yelp, I'd go to him and he would seem stuck between getting up and lying down and he'd cry a little bit and there didn't seem to be anything I could do to help, then he'd finally lower himself back down and be okay again.  For him, it only lasted maybe four days, starting off very far apart, then becoming more frequent, and then it just stopped right when I was ready to argue with the vet that something was definitely wrong and his pain needed to be treated.  BUT, I know others have reported the same sort of yelp and it lasted much longer, so I wouldn't count on it going away soon on its own.  Also, Yoda's phantom pain didn't start for a few days after he had been home, but maybe his fentanyl patch postponed that a bit?  Doesn't sound like Toby got a patch like that, since you said he was off his heavy duty meds already.  Anyway, I'm certainly no expert.  I just try to piece together what I learn from everyone else Laugh

I have had another dog go through amputation since Yoda - Gerry (you'll also see me on here as GerrysMom) and he may have had some phantom pain as well, but he didn't do as much yelping.  His main symptoms were pacing and not wanting to lie down (for like 12 hours straight!).  I suspect the pain meds nearly as much as I suspect pain for his symptoms.  He also might have done much better on Gabapentin.  However, at that time, I was only fostering him, and wasn't able to convince the shelter to insist on getting Gabapentin from the vet.  Poor guy.  We got through it okay in the end and now that I've adopted him I can deal with his health issues directly with his vet myself - thank dog!  He's a sweet happy boy now.  I sure wish it hadn't gone down like that though.

Hi, I'm new here. My 8 yr old lab had her right forequarter removed (osteosarcoma) on December 21. I also experienced some random yelpings which were accompanied by her attempting to run away from what seemed to be pain. It only happened a few times but the frequency was greatest at about 1 week post amputation. She seemed better when the sutures had been removed but I doubt that it had anything to do with the yelping. I assumed phantom pain . It didn't seem frequent enough to put her back on the heavy duty pain meds which had made her sooooooo lethargic and "not herself". It was a scary experience though and made me feel bad for putting her through the amputation in the first place. Thankfully she is now a 100% (well I guess 75%)pain free happy go lucky girl who's loving and living life to the fullest. There is hope on the horizon for you...hang in there.

Tai – 9 yr old lab. Diagnosed Osteosarcoma Dec 18/09. Front right leg amputated Dec 21/09. Started chemo Jan 7/10. Lung mets discovered Sept 16/10. Valiant to the end on Oct 26/10 when cancer reappeared in a leg and we made the decision to set her free. Forever in my heart where not even cancer can take her from me.

We can't thank you all enough!! We took Toby to the vet this morning and right after he got in the office we all heard the loudest and longest scream yet, so hopefully they get a good perspective of the phantom pain . We have our fingers crossed that with the doctors care and Gabapentin we don't have to keep hearing this bone chilling scream from our angel. Thanks again and we'll keep posting and give a little more backround in the next few days!

Hi Toby's pawrent,

Is Toby on any pain meds right now? You mentioned that the strong pain meds have finally worn off, I'm assuming it was a fentanyl patch... But 2-3 days is so very soon after such a big surgery... and it could be that he's still feeling post-surgical pain... or it may also be phantom pain too.

Keep us posted as to what your vet decides to do...
