My 12 year old Rottie mix had his left rear leg amputation on Tuesday & came home Wednesday. Wednesday afternoon & night I feel went great. He took treats & eventually ate his dinner after some coaxing with some of my dinner mixed in, drank water & peed. The doctors told me a bowel movement will come but probably not for a few days. He also shockingly got up on his own when my sister & her kiddos came to visit him. He slept great too.

Yesterday went pretty good as well, still not much of an appetite but he did eat some of his food with eggs I made for him & he's taking all the treats so I'm not too worried. He is very uncomfortable because he has to poop & can't which I also think is leading to the decreased appetite. Last night neither of us slept, he was very restless & whining/crying a lot which is not like him. I took him out to potty & he walked (with my support) our backyard but didn't go. Gave him his Gabapentin (300mg) 90 minutes early & he eventually calmed down & fell asleep around 5am.

When the vet sent us home they sent up with: Carprofen (75mg): given every 12 hours, Levothyroxine (.7mg): for his thyroid, he's on this already. He has a fentanyl patch that gets removed on Sunday & they gave an injection of NOCITA into the surgical site. They also sent prescriptions for me to fill if needed for Gabapentin (400mg) & Trazodone (150mg):sedation/anxiety. I am going to get these filled today as I think the higher dosage of Gabapentin & anti-anxiety will help. If I don't see improvement today I will be calling the dr. to discuss other options for pain.

I am pleasantly surprised with his desire to be independent with walking. He hates the sling I am using to help support him but is begrudgingly letting me help him get around. This makes me confident he will take to walking on his own just fine. Any advice on what I can do or not do to help him figure out how topoopicon with his new normal. He's trying to but doesn't have form down.

Thanks so much for all of your support & advice.

Hey there. I'm so sorry I just saw this right now. Did the increased medications help? I have my paws crossed they did. He came home with really, really good pain control, the standard. It sounds like it just needs some adjustment which you smartly made an effort to do.

Getting him unconstipated will help. Have you tried putting pumpkin pulp, some metamucil, or olive oil in his food? How about extra hydration? That can help too. Wet his food down with no-salt broth, or even tuna water. His appetite should return to normal soon. That Nocita is worn off by now, and the Fentanyl too. They are both 72 hour pain control

That's awesome he is walking so well. Yes, he WILL get his sea legs soon!

I think the best thing you can do right now is to keep activity very, very low. He should only be couch surfing and cuddling until those stitches come out. If he doesn't want your help walking that is a-ok. Just make sure he doesn't start doing too much too soon. That's how things go sideways. The more mellow you can keep him the better. There will be plenty of time for fun when the healing is done.

Hope that this weekend is restful and easy. Keep us posted.

Good morning all!

The stronger pain meds did the trick along with macgyvering a t-shirt to cover his bottom half & the incision so he could sleep without the cone of shame . Of course I'm right next to him so I can make sure he doesn't still try to get at it. I'm a little surprised at how little interest he has in it right now.

Sampson turned 12 on Saturday so we had some visitors stop by. Outside of that it was a weekend filled with couch surfing & binge watching tv.

I really couldn't be happier with how he is doing so far. He's definitely a fighter. This week I'll call the oncologist about when we start chemo. Hoping he does as well with that too.
