See my blog for a recent-ish update on Sam. Basically, the clinical trial we had him in didn't work, he fractured his leg at the tumor site and we were waiting for CBC to come up, and got the go ahead for surgery tomorrow. The only thing that might stand in our way is if there are mets to lungs. I will update here and on the blog tomorrow. If you could give Sam and me (and my mom, who's taking Sam tomorrow) some prayers, good juju, a little blessing or whatever you believe in, that'd be great.

Katie, human momma to Sam, a 9 year old yellow lab who stole my heart. Diagnosed with OSA 4/17/14. Entered CycloSam study at University of Missouri which did not hinder tumor growth. Sam fractured his leg at tumor site on 7/2/14 and was exited from the study. Amputation surgery 7/8/14. Lost his battle 9/25/14. Forever in my ❤️

So sorry about the broken leg, Katie, but amputation will definitely be less painful for Sam. We'll be thinking of you guys and sending lots of positive thoughts and prayers and good healing vibes.

Btw, just in the for what it's worth category, Lexie has had mets since her initial diagnosis pre-amp, and now at 14 she is still a fighter, mets and all. It makes makes me smile every time I see her still get excited to go for walks when she does a pre-walk happy dance, tosses a toy around, goes crazy when we get home from work, etc.

We're almost at her three month ampuversary and I wouldn't trade that time for anything.

Betting Sam will do great. Good luck, and keep us posted!

Hugs,
Deb and Lexie

Joined Club Tripawd April 2014 & Lexie loved life on 3 legs! Advice: Start physical therapy as soon as your vet clears it, especially hydrotherapy if available :-) See Lexie pics here.

Good Luck to Sam on his surgery today!

Lots of hugs and pawsitive thoughts though all indicators point to the fact that he will make a great tripawd!

Take care of yourself and your Mom while he is in the clinic...get some rest.  The first few weeks could be a challenge as he adapts to his new reality and you figure out the right med regime for him during his recovery.  At the two week mark, Tucker, a ten year old chocolate lab, had returned to his old goofy self once his sutures were removed, his meds were reduced and the cone of shame was removed.

Sending LOTS of positive thoughts to Sam and your family.  I hope that the surgery has gone smoothly and that Sam is now in recovery.  Like Linda said the first couple weeks will be the most tiring but hang in there because Sam will get it and learn how to get around.  He'll just need some help in the beginning but then watch out.  I was running after my Leland to catch up with him when he took off and trying to get the belly sling around him so he wouldn't stumble on our concrete patio.  Our fur babies are amazing in what they can accomplish.

Good luck with everything and keep us posted on Sam's progress!!

Sam is on his way home, doing well so far. A little wobbly but doing OK. Seems to be in less pain so far. I know it's early.

I will probably post elsewhere, but anyone have an alternative for the e collar? I have a soft one, but Sam has a hard enough time with his vision that the e collar is really messing him up. They said keep it on for 2 weeks.

Day 2 has been a little more rough.  Lots of panting in between naps. I hope the pain level goes down, walking has been minimal, but I've been taking him out front every 4-5 hours, and it's really slow going. We're going to go out in a little bit and take a break in the driveway.

Meanwhile, I'm binge watching "Scandal" and doing intermittent cleaning/laundry.  Sent the puppy (1 year old) off to doggy daycare as she's been neglected for the last week.  Poor Maizie.

Aww. I'll bet Maizie is like "Getting spoiled at doggy daycare isn't so bad, I kinda like this situation!"

Keep walking and activity to a bare minimum right now, you want to make sure he gets his rest and doesn't overdo things. When he has to go, he'll go potty.

If the panting still continues, ask your vet about managing the pain medication a little differently, I'm sure they'll have ideas for adjusting the dose so he can rest easily when he's awake.
