Hello everyone. It has been a while since I have been here. My greyhound Ronnie had her right front leg amputated in April. So far she is doing just dandy. She had four rounds of chemo, but I stopped because it was just getting too hard on her. She was to have one more round but the fourth one really stressed her out. I have a question for anyone who can answer. Ronnie's amputation site seems to have some kind of stump growing right in the ampuation site, where her front leg joint would have been. It seems to be getting larger too. I would have figured that if she was taking chemo, nothing would grow. Her last round of chemo was June 17th approximately. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? It is very sore to touch her there too. I will be taking her to her vet this week but it worries me and i was hoping someone could answer my question.

Thank you

Laurie

Ronnie Smith, born July 13 2000. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma 4/2010. Right front leg amputation 4/2010. Cancer returned after 4 rounds of chemo July 2010. Reunited with her amputated leg 7/21/2010. God bless my baby girl.

Hi Laurie, glad to hear Ronnie is doing so well.  Ruthie had a rear amputation so I can't help you there.  But I wanted to say hi and I'm sure someone will have great words of wisdom for you.

Hi Laurie!  Ronnie is a beautiful girl.  Don't have any words of wisdom for you - I don't recall anyone having a similar issued, but maybe there is someone out there with a better memory than myself.  Keep that vet appointment, always err on the side of caution.  Wishing you and Ronnie painfree days until the appointment date.

thank you all for your kind thoughts.

Pat I am so very sorry to hear of your loss of Ruthie. It stinks and it is so difficult. I lost my Randi in December and miss her every day.

I will keep you all posted on what is going on with Ronnie. She is comfortable because we had some left over pain meds and I gave her some of those.

I will be back after I schedule an appointment this week for Ronnie, thanks again all.

Hi Laurie,

I also don't know what it could be... but no use worrying until the vet thinks it's time to worry... Yah, easier said than done, I know... but try. In the meantime... tramadol should help with any pain Ronnie might be having from this new stump or growth.

Good luck with the vet and please keep us posted!!

Hi Ronnie, it's good to hear from you. Sorry the chemo didn't work out but lots of dawgs do just fine here without it. I'm not aware of anyone growing something at the incision site, but I'm thinking perhaps it could be scar tissue? Or a fatty tumor? Hope so! Let us know what the vet says OK? This is a new one for us.

Thanks for sharing, good luck this week.

It is certainly possible for cancer to return at the incision site but it is not very common.  It is more likely to be a suture reaction (those deep sutures can take a while to come to the surface) or a pressure sore (does this area touch the ground?).

Keep us posted!

Hi everyone. Ronnie's regular vet is on vacation so his son looked at her growth. He thinks it may be a hematoma. A blood clot. She ran into the door facing about two weeks ago and could have caused the main atery to bleed, hence causing the hematoma. He took a blood sample and said something in her blood was odd and sent it to pathology. He said it is very rare for the osteosarcoma evil to return. I pray it is just the hematoma. For now ice is supposed to stop the bleeding and growing of this thing. Her tramadol keeps her comfortable for now. I will know more Wednesday and keep everyone posted. Otherwise Ronnie is doing just great.

Thanks again to everyone here who helped us through this! XOXOXOXOXOX

Her pathology report came back ok, I guess. My vet is not very clear with me. I have started Ronnie on 100mg a day of Artemisinin . I bought it from http://holleypharma.com/. Other sites try to black market bad stuff and Ohio State recommended buying it from here. I guess it is supposed to fight against Osteosarcoma cells and have had good luck with it.

Ronnie is still in pain from the lump thing and I will call again tomorrow and ask them how long they plan to let my dog suffer. They told me ice and heat, and neither has helped. She has been on her pain meds but it just doesnt seem to help.

I will keep you posted on how she is doing. Please say a little prayer for Miss Ronnie.

Thanks to you all.

Ronnie thanks you all! She has been moaning a lot so I called her doc today and we go back tomorrow morning for a re-evaluation. I think it is about time. Thank you for all your prayers. My priest actually said that if you want to pray for your dog, pray to St Francis. So have been but my neighbor said to pray to God because everything goes through him anyway so why not go to the source. Amen!

Prayers to all of you as well.............talk to you as soon as we know something
