raphael diagnosed by ctc scan today after increasing swelling lump on his wrist and increasing pain last 3 weeks. Vet advised either carry out the  amputation or put him to sleep while still under anaesthetic , could have woken him up to see if he could manage by tying the leg up, but seemed best to go for it straight away. Raph is in hospital. Comes out tomorrow in theory but I will request another night in hospital. So many questions dont know where to start....

YOU ARE NOT ALONE!  We are here with you every step of the way, okay?  We understand feeling so overwhelmed and uncertain.  So hang onto us and we'll get you through this recovery period.

Oh gosh!  What a rough time Raphael is having!  Sorry you were given such shocking information and  jad to make some quick decisions.  As difficult as it was, I can tell you that everyone here is mighty glad you are giving Raphael a chance at a quality pain free life!

I shutter to think what decision would have been made had the Vet gotten Raphael "awake"  and tied his leg up a d used that as a "deciding factor".  Raphael would have still been somewhat druggy from the anesthesia.  Just really glad you didn't go that route!

Larger dogs sometimes need a bit of extra time to get their mobility worked out, so no need to be concerned if Raphael needs several days to get mobile.

Most dogs come home on Tramadol, Gabapentin, Rimadyl and an antibiotic.  It's really important to keep the pain managed.  It's major surgery and it hurts!

If yiu have hardwood floors you'll want to get non slip scatter rugs for traction .  No stairs, no jumping, no running around.  Short leashed potty breaks and then rest, rest, rest and more rest.  Raphael may not poop for a few days and may be off food for a few days.  Drinking and peeing are important though.

When you do go to pick Raph up, don't even bother looking at the incision.  He just wants to see yiur smiling face telling him what a good boy he is!

TRY and get some rest while you can.  Raph is as high as a kite right now and feeling no pain!

Where do you live?  We have members almost everywhere!

Update us when you can and ask any questions.  We pretty much have experienced it all here!

Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Thankyou admin and benny 55 alreadynsome useful info and support, i asked vet what happens next and he say he come home on tramadol but can get syronger pain relief if necessary, he goes back monday for check, maybe now i ask for it in advance incase he is in pain sat and sun. My plan is i have a huge dog pen i can put up in sitting room so hes safe in one place and the little dogs cant get in to bother him, he wont want 5hem jumping up and down on him...and he has a new giant size dog bed soft mesh on metal frame i have thick pad bed or  memory foam bed can go on top if he wants them. Ive put ramps to get to garden ,my friends sending a lifting harness he is same wt as me so we have to see how he goes, if he has to pee on newspaper in his pen few days thats not a prob if cant get him in garden steaight off.floor is tiles maybe i better put something non slip down i have rubber  back 6 ft by 4 mats washable .. i looked at photos of the wound here so wont be a surprise, exercise regime info will be useful, i will get the e books as hard to even know wgat to look for in the forumsletbalone find it right now, but will join in better later and do specific searches, will be good to see his smiley face again... im still as if hit on head with a mallet.. i have several affenpinschers,  little black toydogs with electrified head and shoulders, so i. Assuming if i go out a couple of hours now and then hebwont feel lonely. It will be like normal life for him, my friend has a swimming pool fordogs, maybe later, and her physiotherapist suggests some sort of support for the remaining front leg, interested to get info, his leg was removed too high up for prosthesis, he is 8 yrs and was fit and well until ge got the tumour fet thinks symptoms all downto the pain, not illness in himself, he eats well, is on raw meat diet, will get supplements and vary it a bit more everyones saying give devils claw? I live near Bath in UK his vet hospital in Bath is very good has all the right gear and specialust did his op and assessment, sent biopsy off so his exact chemo regime can be decided upon

Hi Raphael and family 🌺

Welcome to our Tripawds family 🐾🐾🐾

You've got great info already, I've got nothing to add and it seems to me you're very well prepared indeedy 👍🏽

Really tough to have to make a major decision like that so quickly but you definitely have taken the right decision for your lovely boy, with his leg gone the pain is also 100% gone ☺️

He will recover and you'll have a wonderful, happy life together 💕

Recovery can be difficult for big breeds as Sally pointed out but it doesn't last forever!

Generally, after stitches come out our babies start improving enormously 😍

We are, of course, all here to help, guide and answer any questions you may have, anytime.

Sending you a big hug and lots of ear scratches to your cutie pie 😘😘😘😘🐮💫✨🌟🌹

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Thats great news she had over a yr extra, 7 yrs for a dog... so far no metastises detected but vet pointed out they could still be on the way, but chemo hopefully stave them off for a while, pray they are not but prepared, wouldnt prolong his life without quality, just grateful gor extra pain free time with him and time to adjust that hes got  to go sometime,as have we all... my friend is lookng into the lightwright fustom braces for the remaining front leg before he strains that ... home today... still getting ready, I have several affenpunschers so he has plenty of company when im out of the house but they penned away fornnow so cant bother him

Tripawds does not manage any Facebook group. You can read why below*, and will need to contact the admin(s) of whatever group you are referring to – good luck!

Anyone can post to and follow the Tripawds Facebook page.

*Why You Won’t Find a Tripawds Facebook Group

and can i buy the books in uk

Yes, certainly! The Tripawds e-books are available anywhere and can be downloaded immediately from the Tripawds Downloads blog .
